The Effect Of Phase Separation On Charge Ordering State In La12xcaxmno3 (X ¼ 1/2, 2/3, And 3/4), H. D. Zhou, G. Li, S. J. Feng, Y. Liu, T. Qian, Xiaojuan Fan, X. G. Li

Physics Faculty Research

The magnetic phase separation characteristics are found in manganese perovskite La1/3Ca2/3MnO3 by electron spin resonance (ESR) and magnetization measurements. An extra resonance signal observed in ESR spectra just above the charge ordering (CO) temperature TCO provides strong evidence for the existence of ferromagnetic (FM) clusters near the CO state. The investigation of the resistivity of La1-xCaxMnO3 (x=1/2, 2/3, and 3/4) in different magnetic fields up to 14 T shows that the effect of magnetic fields on CO state decreases with increasing x. Our results indicate that the percolative characteristics …

Cooling Atoms In An Optical Trap By Selective Parametric Excitation, Nicola Poli, Robert J. Brecha, Giacomo Roati, Giovanni Modugno Jan 2002

Cooling Atoms In An Optical Trap By Selective Parametric Excitation, Nicola Poli, Robert J. Brecha, Giacomo Roati, Giovanni Modugno

Physics Faculty Publications

We demonstrate the possibility of energy-selective removal of cold atoms from a tight optical trap by means of parametric excitation of the trap vibrational modes. Taking advantage of the anharmonicity of the trap potential, we either selectively remove the most energetic trapped atoms or excite those at the bottom of the trap by tuning the parametric modulation frequency. This process, which had been previously identified as a possible source of heating, also appears to be a robust way for forcing evaporative cooling in anharmonic traps.

A 0.5 Μm Thick Polysilicon Schottky Diode With Rectification Ratio Of 10^6, Elena A. Guliants, Chunhai Ji, Young J. Song, Wayne A. Anderson Jan 2002

A 0.5 Μm Thick Polysilicon Schottky Diode With Rectification Ratio Of 10^6, Elena A. Guliants, Chunhai Ji, Young J. Song, Wayne A. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Polycrystalline Si films, 0.5-mm thick, were obtained as a result of metal-induced growth by sputtering from a Si target on 25 nm thick Ni prelayers at 525 °C. Silicon grew heteroepitaxially on the NiSi2 layer formed due to the reaction between the sputtered Si atoms and Ni. Schottky diodes were fabricated on the Si films by deposition of a Schottky metal on the front surface of the film while Ni disilicide provided an intimate ohmic contact at the back. A Pd/n-Si diode using an n-Si film annealed for 2 h at 700 °C in forming gas demonstrated a rectification ratio …

Self-Assembly Of Spatially Separated Silicon Structures By Si Heteroepitaxy On Ni Disilicide, Elena A. Guliants, Chunhai Ji, Wayne A. Anderson Jan 2002

Self-Assembly Of Spatially Separated Silicon Structures By Si Heteroepitaxy On Ni Disilicide, Elena A. Guliants, Chunhai Ji, Wayne A. Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A nonlithographic approach to produce self-assembled spatially separated Si structures for nanoelectronic applications was developed, employing the metal-induced silicon growth. Densely packed Si whiskers, 500–800 nm thick and up to 2500 nm long, were obtained by magnetron sputtering of Si on a 25 nm thick Ni prelayer at 575 °C. The nucleation of the NiSi2 compound at the Ni–Si interface followed by the Si heteroepitaxy on the lattice-matched NiSi2 is suggested to be the driving force for the whisker formation.

Implementation Of A Si/Sic Hybrid Optically Controlled High-Power Switching Device, Prashant Bhadri, Kuntao Ye, Elena A. Guliants, Fred R. Beyette Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The ever-increasing performance and economy of operation requirements placed on commercial and military transport aircraft are resulting in very complex systems. As a result, the use of fiber optic component technology has lead to high data throughput, immunity to EMI, reduced certification and maintenance costs and reduced weight features. In particular, in avionic systems, data integrity and high data rates are necessary for stable flight control. Fly-by-Light systems that use optical signals to actuate the flight control surfaces of an aircraft have been suggested as a solution to the EMI problem in avionic systems. Current fly-by-light systems are limited by …

Angular Range For Reflection Of P-Polarized Light At The Surface Of An Absorbing Medium With Reflectance Below That At Normal Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, Ericson E. Ugbo

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The range of incidence angle, 0 < φ < φe, over which p-polarized light is reflected at interfaces between transparent and absorbing media with reflectance below that at normal incidence is determined. Contours of constant φe in the complex plane of the relative dielectric constant ε are presented. A method for determining the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index, ε1/2 = n + jk, which is based on measuring φe and the pseudo-Brewster angle φpB, is viable in the domain of fractional optical constants, n, k < 1.

Donor And Acceptor Concentrations In Degenerate Inn, David C. Look, H. Lu, William J. Schaff, J. Jasinski, Z. Liliental-Weber

Physics Faculty Publications

A formalism is presented to determine donor (ND) and acceptor (NA) concentrations in wurtzitic InN characterized by degenerate carrier concentration (n) and mobility (μ). The theory includes scattering not only by charged point defects and impurities, but also by charged threading dislocations, of concentration Ndis. For a 0.45-μm-thick InN layer grown on Al2O3 by molecular beam epitaxy, having Ndis = 5×1010 cm−2, determined by transmission electron microscopy, n(20 K) = 3.5×1018 cm−3 and μ(20 K) = 1055 cm2 …

Cosmology With Negative Potentials, Gary Felder, Andrei Frolov, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde Jan 2002

Cosmology With Negative Potentials, Gary Felder, Andrei Frolov, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde

Physics: Faculty Publications

We investigate cosmological evolution in models where the effective potential V(f) may become negative for some values of the field f. Phase portraits of such theories in the space of variables (f,f˙ ,H) have several qualitatively new features as compared with phase portraits in the theories with V(f).0. Cosmological evolution in models with potentials with a ‘‘stable’’ minimum at V(f),0 is similar in some respects to the evolution in models with potentials unbounded from below. Instead of reaching an AdS regime dominated by the negative vacuum energy, the universe reaches a turning point where its energy density vanishes, and then …

Cooper Pair Islanding Model Of Insulating Nanohoneycomb Films, Shawna M. Hollen, J M. Valles Jr. Jan 2002

Cooper Pair Islanding Model Of Insulating Nanohoneycomb Films, Shawna M. Hollen, J M. Valles Jr.

Physics & Astronomy

We first review evidence for the Cooper pair insulator (CPI) phase in amorphous nanohoneycomb (NHC) films. We then extend our analysis of superconducting islands induced by film thickness variations in NHC films to examine the evolution of island sizes through the magnetic field-driven SIT. Finally, using the islanding picture, we present a plausible model for the appearance and behavior of the CPI phase in amorphous NHC films.

High Spatial Resolution Thermal Conductivity Of Bulk Zno (0001), Diana I. Florescu, L. G. Mourokh, Fred H. Pollak, David C. Look, G. Cantwell, X. Li Jan 2002

High Spatial Resolution Thermal Conductivity Of Bulk Zno (0001), Diana I. Florescu, L. G. Mourokh, Fred H. Pollak, David C. Look, G. Cantwell, X. Li

Physics Faculty Publications

We measured high spatial/depth resolution 300 K thermal conductivity κ of the Zn and O surfaces of two bulk n-type ZnO (0001) samples, grown by a vapor-phase transport method, using scanning thermal microscopy (SThM). The thermal investigation was performed in both point-by-point (∼2 μm resolution) and area-scan modes. On the first sample κ=1.16±0.08 (Zn face)/1.10±0.09 (O face) W/cm K while for the second material κ=1.02±0.07 (Zn face)/0.98±0.08 (O face) W/cm K. These are the highest κ values reported on ZnO. A correlation between SThM area-scan readings and surface topography was established by simultaneously performing atomic force microscopy scans. The …

Coherent Integration Of 0.5 Ghz Spectral Holograms At 1536 Nm Using Dynamic Biphase Codes, Z Cole, Thomas Böttger, R Krishna Mohan, R Reibel, W R. Babbitt, R L. Cone, K D. Merkel

Physics and Astronomy

Spectral hole-burning-based optical processing devices are proposed for coherent integration of multiple high-bandwidth interference patterns in a spectral hole-burning medium. In this implementation, 0.5 GHz spectral holographic gratings are dynamically accumulated in Er3+:Y2SiO5" style="position: relative;" tabindex="0" id="MathJax-Element-1-Frame">Er3+:Y2SiO5 at 4.2 K using a 1536 nm laser frequency stabilized to a spectral hole, along with commercial off-the-shelf components. The processed data, representing time delays over 0.5–2.0 μs, were optically read out using a frequency-swept probe; this approach makes possible the use of low-bandwidth, large-dynamic-range detectors and digitizers and enables competitive processing for applications such as radar, lidar, and radio astronomy. Coherent integration …

Mutual Constraints Between Reionization Models And Parameter Extraction From Cosmic Microwave Background Data, Aparna Venkatesan Jan 2002

Mutual Constraints Between Reionization Models And Parameter Extraction From Cosmic Microwave Background Data, Aparna Venkatesan

Physics and Astronomy

Spectroscopic studies of high-redshift objects and increasingly precise data on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are beginning to independently place strong complementary bounds on the epoch of hydrogen reionization. Parameter estimation from current CMB data continues, however, to be subject to several degeneracies. Here, we focus on those degeneracies in CMB parameter forecasts related to the optical depth to reionization. We extend earlier work on the mutual constraints that such analyses of CMB data and a reionization model may place on each other to a more general parameter set and to the case of data anticipated from the MAP satellite. …

Modeling An Electrosensory Landscape: Behavioral And Morphological Optimization In Elasmobranch Prey Capture, Brandon R. Brown Jan 2002

Modeling An Electrosensory Landscape: Behavioral And Morphological Optimization In Elasmobranch Prey Capture, Brandon R. Brown

Physics and Astronomy

Most biological sensory systems benefit from multiple sensors. Elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) possess an array of electroreceptive organs that facilitate prey location, mate location and navigation. Here, the perceived electrosensory landscape for an elasmobranch approaching prey is mathematically modeled. The voltages that develop simultaneously in dozens of separate sensing organs are calculated using electrodynamics. These voltages lead directly to firing rate modifications in the primary afferent nerves. The canals connecting the sense organs to an elasmobranch's surface exhibit great variation of location and orientation. Here, the voltages arising in the sense organs are found to depend strongly on the …

Collisional And Radiative Processes In High-Pressure Discharge Plasmas, Kurt H. Becker, Peter F. Kurunczi, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 2002

Collisional And Radiative Processes In High-Pressure Discharge Plasmas, Kurt H. Becker, Peter F. Kurunczi, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

Discharge plasmas at high pressures (up to and exceeding atmospheric pressure), where single collision conditions no longer prevail, provide a fertile environment for the experimental study of collisions and radiative processes dominated by (i) step-wise processes, i.e., the excitation of an already excited atomic/molecular state and by (ii) three-body collisions leading, for instance, to the formation of excimers. The dominance of collisional and radiative processes beyond binary collisions involving ground-state atoms and molecules in such environments allows for many interesting applications of high-pressure plasmas such as high power lasers, opening switches, novel plasma processing applications and sputtering, absorbers and reflectors …

Translation Of 'Balika Badhu: A Selected Anthology Of Bengali Short Stories', Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Jan 2002

Translation Of 'Balika Badhu: A Selected Anthology Of Bengali Short Stories', Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This project, which began with the desire to render into English a rather long tale by Bimal Kar about five years ago, eventually grew into a considerably more extended compilation of Bengali short stories by 10 of the most well-known practitioners of that art since the heyday of Rabindranath Tagore. The collection is limited in many ways, not the least of which being that no woman writer has been included, and that it contains only a baker's dozen stories (if we count Bonophool's micro-stories collectively as one ) — a number pitifully small considering the vast and prolific field of …

The Classical Limit Of The Quantum Baker's Map, Mark Morgan-Tracy Jan 2002

The Classical Limit Of The Quantum Baker's Map, Mark Morgan-Tracy

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This work concerns the finding of the semi-classical form of the coherent state representation for the class of quantum baker’s maps defined by Schack and Caves. It begins by introducing the finite-dimensional Hilbert space on which the quantum baker’s map is defined. Its pertinent features including the all important symmetry operators are introduced and given a full explanation. We also introduce the finite-dimensional phase space which will give the semi-classical limit a geometrical interpretation. For a D dimensional Hilbert space, the finite-dimensional phase space is found to be a grid with D2 points. Each point corresponds to a particular pair …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Magnetic interactions in perovskite compounds of the type La1-xSrxMO3-δ (M=3d transition such as Mn and Fe) are presumed to arise through a super exchange between 3d electrons of the magnetic ions via oxygen orbitals. The magnetic structure of La0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ has been studied with neutron diffraction. Oxygen vacancies were created by annealing samples under various gases including N2, air and mixtures of CO/CO2. All La0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ compounds maintain the rhombohedral structure (space group R3̄c). The air- or oxygen-annealed samples have almost no oxygen …

Large Enhancement Of Spontaneous Emission Rates Of Inas Quantum Dots In Gaas Microdisks, W. Fang, Alexey Yamilov, Yinfa Ma, J. Y. Xu, S. T. Ho, G. S. Solomon, Hui Cao Jan 2002

Large Enhancement Of Spontaneous Emission Rates Of Inas Quantum Dots In Gaas Microdisks, W. Fang, Alexey Yamilov, Yinfa Ma, J. Y. Xu, S. T. Ho, G. S. Solomon, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Control of spontaneous emission in a microcavity has many important applications, e.g. improvement of the efficiency of light emitting devices. InAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in microdisks are ideal systems for spontaneous emission control. The whispering gallery (WG) modes of microdisks have low volume and high quality factor. The homogeneous linewidth of InAs quantum dots is smaller than the spectral width of WG modes. Thus, a large enhancement of the spontaneous emission rates should be expected for QDs coupled to WG modes. However, large inhomogeneous broadening of the QD energy levels and random spatial distribution of the QDs in a …

Near Bandedge Optical Absorption Processes In Semi Insulating And N-Type Gaas, Tacetti̇n Yildirim, Sebahatti̇n Tüzemen, Seydi̇ Doğan, Beki̇r Gürbulak, Aytunç Ateş, Muhammet Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Physics

Near bandedge optical absorption processes in semi-insulating (SI) GaAs and Te-doped n-type GaAs crystals were investigated in the temperature range 10--300 K. We observed absorption peaks whose maximum energies E_{m}, ranging from 1.498 to 1.485 eV decrease as the temperature increases from 10 K to 100 K. The peaks for both SI and n-type GaAs disappeared above 100 K. Extrapolating the graphs of E$_{g}-E_{m} versus temperature, we observed that near bandedge absorption is overlapped by the conduction band at about 220 K and 260 K for n-type and SI samples, respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the absorption in the region …

Kinetics Of Light-Induced Metastable Defect Creation And Annealing In A-Si:H, Alp Osman Kodolbaş, Aynur Eray, Özcan Öktü

Turkish Journal of Physics

Constant Photocurrent Method (CPM) and steady state photoconductivity measurements are used to investigate the creation of light-induced metastable defects in a-Si:H at room temperature and their annealing. Light-induced metastable defect concentration N$_{d}$ varies with exposure time t_{e}as t_{e}^{r} with r=0.34\ pm 0.02, as expected from the recombination induced weak bond breaking model [1]. The validity of a stretched exponential model is also studied [2]. From the annealing experiments, the distribution of thermal annealing activation energies is calculated following the method proposed by Hata and Wagner [3]. Defects created at room temperature show a narrow distribution of annealing activation energies peaking …

Experimental Investigation Of Temperature Effect On Refractive Index Of Dye Laser Liquids, Şeref Yaltkaya, Ramazan Aydin

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this work, refractive index of selected dye laser solutions were measured by fiber optic sensor. The fiber optic probe was dipped into the liquids and according to Fresnel's Reflection Law, refractive index values were obtained at the wavelength of the laser utilized. The solutions consisted of Rhodamine 6G, Rhodamine B and Coumarin 481 dissolved in methanol, and ethylene glycol, respectively. Refractive index variations of the dye solutions and their solvents with temperature were measured and the refractive index temperature coefficient dn/dT were calculated at the wavelength of 780 nm.

Turkish Journal of Physics

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of thermal annealing on hydrogenated intrinsic amorphous silicon a-Si:H films. Hydrogenated intrinsic amorphous films were seperately coated on glass and single cyrstalline silicon substrates by means of d.c. magnetron sputtering technique. a-Si:H/glass and a-Si:H/c-Si samples were annealed in the temperature range of 23-250^oC, 23-200^oC and 600-1050^oC, respectively. The effect of annealing on the a-Si:H films were examined by means of Infrared vibrational transmittance spectrum technique (IR) in the wavenumber range 4000-400 cm^{-1} and Scanning Electron Microsope (SEM). The results were interpreted in terms of hydrogen diffusion.

Preparation And Anisotropic Elastic Property Of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Whiskers, Khaliq A. Chaudhary, M. Arshad Choudhry

Turkish Journal of Physics

Flexible and superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O whiskers have been prepared by sintering the melt-quenched glassy powder at 830^oC in oxygen atmosphere. X-ray diffraction and a.c. susceptibility measurements reveal that the whiskers belong to 2212 phase with T_{c} = 79k. The whiskers possess high strength and flexibility along c-axis but were found to be weak and brittle when bent normal to the c-axis. The anisotropic micromechanical elastic property of the whiskers have been demonstrated under a low power optical microscope.
