The Synthesis And Characterization Of The 2,2'-Bisacylazide Of 3,3'-Bipyridine, Magdy Adly Guirguis El-Fayoumy Jul 1972

The Synthesis And Characterization Of The 2,2'-Bisacylazide Of 3,3'-Bipyridine, Magdy Adly Guirguis El-Fayoumy

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The primary objective of this research has been the synthesis and characterization of a new heterocyclic diacylazide, the 2,2'-bisacylazide of 3,3'-bipyridine 19. This heterocyclic diacylazide has been successfully synthesized from the phenanthrolin-5,6-dione 14, and examined with regard to its.thermal and photolytic decomposition.

Thermal decomposition of this disacylazide seems to go by a double-barreled Curtius rearrangement leading to a series of pyridonaphthyridinone (20) compounds such as 22 and 29.

An initial study of the photolysis of this bisacylazide has been initiated to examine the possible formation of nitrene-type intermediates.

Catechol Effected Dissolution Of Silicate Minerals, James Maurice Kelley Jan 1972

Catechol Effected Dissolution Of Silicate Minerals, James Maurice Kelley

Dissertations and Theses

The chemical properties of guanidinium tris(catecholato)siliconate, [(H₂N)₂C=NH₂]₂[Si(C₆H₄O₂)₃]·XH₂O (0 < X < 1), precipitated from an ammoniacal solution of silica and catechol by adding guanidinium hydrochloride, (H₂N)₂C=NH·HC1, were studied, and infrared, nmr, x-ray powder diffraction, and analytical data were gathered.

This same compound was, upon addition of' (H₂N)₂C=NH·HC1, isolated from 0.25, M aqueous catechol solutions buffered at pH 10 and containing the silicate minerals albite, andradite, muscovite, pyrophyllite, talc, and wollastonite, and also from unbuffered catechol solutions containing wollastonite and andradite.

It is concluded from this work that the formation of an anionic catechol-silicon complex, Si(C₆H₄O₂)₃²⁻, is largely responsible for the dissolution of the minerals mentioned above. From this conclusion, it is proposed that naturally occurring members of the class of organic compounds to which catechol belongs, the aromatic v̲i̲̲c̲-diols, may play …

Birch Reduction Of Benzamide, N-Substituted Benzamides And Biphenylene, Luther Dickson Jan 1972

Birch Reduction Of Benzamide, N-Substituted Benzamides And Biphenylene, Luther Dickson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Birch reduction of benzamide with sodium and absolute ethanol. 95% ethanol, or tert-butanol in liquid ammonia gave 1,4-dihydrobenzamide in varying amounts. The amide group was not reduced. The two most important variables encountered were the alcohol used and whether or not ammonium chloride was added after the reduction was completed. Without this addition of ammonium chloride, little or no 1,4-dihydrobenzamide was present after workup, while with its addition some 1,4-dihydrobenzamide formed whether the proton source was absolute ethanol, 95% ethanol, or tert-butanol. The highest yield was obtained with tert-butanol with ammonium chloride being added. Addition of ammonium chloride apparently …

The Thermal Rearrangement Of Triarylacetonitrile Oxides., Leslie Wayne Gibbs Jan 1972

The Thermal Rearrangement Of Triarylacetonitrile Oxides., Leslie Wayne Gibbs

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This research is a detailed study of the rearrangement of triarylacetonitrile oxides to the corresponding triarylmethylisocyanates. The kinetics of the rearrangement of triphenylacetonitrlle oxide was followed by infrared absorption spectroscopy using the peak due to the N-0 stretching (1307cm-1). A study, both, using the differential method (i.e., a plot of the logs of the initial slopes vs. the log of the concentration) and a check of the integrated forms of the rate expressions to determine which gave a constant value for the rate constant showed that the reaction is first order.

From measurements of the rate constant, k, …

All Master's Theses

The boron trifluoride, tin (IV) fluoride and titanium (IV) fluoride complexes with 1,4-dioxane have been prepared and studied using infrared techniques. The compositions of the complexes have been determined and correspond to the 1:1 adducts in the case of the tin and titanium compounds. The boron trifluoride adduct is a 2:1 (acid:base) adduct. Infrared spectra in the region 1300 cm.-1 to 550 cm.-1 are given and the effects of coordination upon the ligand vibrations are described.

The Chemistry Of Some Unusual Carbodiimides, Donald Melvin Plautz Jan 1971

The Chemistry Of Some Unusual Carbodiimides, Donald Melvin Plautz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several N1-alkyl-N2-(N,N-dialkylamino)carbodiimides, which were found to form dimeric species, were prepared, and the structure of the dimeric species determined. A study of the reaction chemistry of both the monomeric and dimeric carbodiimides led to the conclusion that dimerization occurred via a (π2s + π2a) ground-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism, and that thermal decomposition of the dimeric species occurred via a (π2s +-π2s) excited-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism. Although dialkylphosphoramidates have been shown to be useful intermediates in the preparation of unsaturated organic nitrogen compounds, N-acyl- and N-imino-dialkylphosphorohydrazidates were found to be too unstable, forming trialkylphosphates upon distillation, to be of …

Part I. The Stereochemistry Of Carbanions Formed By Base Catalyzed Decomposition Of Azoacetates Part Ii. Anomalous Decarbonylation Of 4 –Substituted Carboxylic Acids With Thionyl Chloride, Tai-Shun Lin

Dissertations

Introduction

Although the stereochemical capabilities of carbonium ions have been extensively investigated, the stereochemical fate of carbanions has been subjected relatively little to systematic scrutiny. The fact that only a limited number of clean-cut sources of carbanions are available has added difficulty to such investigations.

The stereochemical capabilities of carbanions has been extensively and thoroughly examined in recent years by Cram and coworkers. However, the carbanion carbon developed in the reactions employed was bonded in every case to an unsaturated (usually aromatic) group. No fully aliphatic carbanion has been subjected to such a stereochemical study.

The reaction of lead tetraacetate …

A Study Of The Esterification Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanediol, Lewis Metzler Naylor

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this research was to prepare, identify, and characterize 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,.3-cyclobutanediol bischloroacetate using 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol and monochloroacetic acid as starting materials. The synthesis of this diester has not been reported previously.

Catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions were attempted, with the uncatalyzed having, in general, the better yield. The diester, trans-2,2,4,4-tetrametbyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol bischloroacetate (mp, 103.5-104; n22, 1.516-1.520), was isolated from a mixture of the isomers. The trans configuration of the diester was confirmed by comparing known nuclear magnetic resonance spectra to that of the diester. Infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm functional groups. Standard analytical techniques were used to determine chloride …

Studies In Syntheses Of Non-Isoprenoid Sesquiterpenes, Raojibhai Javerbhai Patel Jan 1969

Studies In Syntheses Of Non-Isoprenoid Sesquiterpenes, Raojibhai Javerbhai Patel

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to find the shortest route to prepare the 1,9-dimethyl decalone system I, a key intermediate in the synthesis of non-isoprenoid sesquiterpenes. The decalone system I was prepared in good yield by dehydrating the hydroxyketone II with 50% H2SO4. The dehydration of hydroxyketone II was also affected by heating in the presence of iodine crystals to yield 80% of the decalone system I.

The basic kinds of approaches under investigation were the Diels-Alder reaction and the Robinson annellation. The Diels-Alder reaction between the conjugated diene, 1-acetoxybutadiene (III) and 2,3-dimethylcyclohexenone (IV) under …

The Preparation Of Coordination Compounds Of Rhodium (Iii) And Glutamic Acid And Substituted Glutamic Acids, Herman William Kalberer Jan 1969

The Preparation Of Coordination Compounds Of Rhodium (Iii) And Glutamic Acid And Substituted Glutamic Acids, Herman William Kalberer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The father of coordination chemistry was Alfred Werner (1866- 1919). Werner's theory was largely responsible for the renewed interest in, and rapid growth of, inorganic chemistry around the turn of the century. He postulated that there were two types of valence, primary and secondary, which correspond, in modern terminology, to oxidation state and coordination number. The primary valences must be either negative ions, neutral molecules or, occasionally even, positive ions (11). He also postulated that the secondary valences are directed in space about the central ion, not only in the solid state, but also when the complex is in solution. …

The Effect Of Oak Leaves On The Leaching Of Trace Metals From Sand, Thomas Elton Goodwin May 1968

The Effect Of Oak Leaves On The Leaching Of Trace Metals From Sand, Thomas Elton Goodwin

Honors Theses

Sand is fairly rich in some common trace metals, notably manganese and iron. However, these metals for the most part are in a state which renders them insoluble in water. It is thought that the presence of organic matter (principally leaves) in the water enhances the dissolution of some of these trace metals into the aqueous solution.

This enhancement of dissolution is generally thought to come about in three main ways: (1) The organic matter present lowers the oxygen content of the water, and the metals are reduced into a soluble form, (2) The organic material, some of which is …
