Technical Evaluation Of Hardwood Biorefinery Using The "Near-Neutral" Hemicellulose Extraction Process, Haibo Mao

A technical analysis was performed for a new process that produces ethanol and acetic acid from hardwood in addition to bleached hardwood Kraft pulp. The new process, termed the "near neutral" hemicellulose extraction process, involves the extraction of wood hemicellulose using green liquor prior to conventional Kraft pulping. This thesis assumes that the new process is located at an existing kraft pulp mill. Ancillary unit operations in the process include hydrolysis of the extracted carbohydrates using sulfuric acid, filtration of the extract to remove lignin that was extracted with the carbohydrates, liquid-liquid extraction of acetic acid and by-product furfural, liming …

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are considered to have many potential applications due to their unique structural, physical, chemical and electronic properties. Because the rigid structure of carbon nanotube determines its toughness in dissolution, the processing capability of carbon nanotube is strongly limited. My carbon nanotube functionalization research was mainly focused on developing innovative methods to functionalize nanotubes with various polymers and large aromatic molecules to make them soluble to study their interesting properties and applications. 3-Phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1,2-benzisothiazole 1,1 dioxide (NSC108406), identified as an HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitor, is chosen for lead optimization. A series of analogues are docked using SYBYL FlexiDock into both wild-type (wt) reverse transcriptase (RT) and Tyr181 --> Cys181 (Y181C) RT, from the dataset of efavirenz (Sustiva®) bound to the enzyme. Minimizations using genetic algorithms are performed, and the lowest energy conformations are evaluated. Five structures emerge as good fits either in both enzymes or only in Y181C RT. 3-(m-Cyclopropylphenyl)- and 3-(isopropylfuranyl)-2-methyl-2,3- dihydro-1,2-benzisothiazole 1,1-dioxides do not exhibit improved binding in wt RT over efavirenz. Considerable research has been conducted into the kinetics and selectivity of the oxygen delignification process to overcome limitation in its use. However most studies were performed in a batch reactor whereby the hydroxide and dissolved oxygen concentrations are changing during the reaction time in an effort to simulate tower performance in pulp mills. This makes it difficult to determine the reaction order of the different reactants in the rate expressions. Due to their unique electronic, optical, catalytic and mechanical properties, nanomaterials (nanoparticles and nanotubes) have been attracting much attention over the past decades. In this dissertation, polymeric nanoparticles bearing derivatized D-mannose and galactose molecules were prepared via dispersion polymerization and their interactions with various bacterial cells were studied. The results show that there are strong adhesin-specific interactions of the nanoparticles with E. coli cells, resulting significant nanoparticles-madiated cell agglutination.

Metal organic chemical vapor deposition is a process used in the production of thin, crystalline films. The method involves the transportation of volatile, organometallic precursors to a heated substrate, where it undergoes chemical reactions to produce a thin, metallic layer on the substrate surface. Strontium and barium films of this nature are used as components in semi-conductor device fabrication, including among other things, the cell capacitors in Dynamic Random Access Memory computer chips. One of the central dogmas of chemistry is the use of convection heating to increase rate and yields of reactions. However, other methods for the impartation of energy do exist. Microwave irradiation uses high power waves to directly excite molecule into higher energy states. This speeds up the kinetics of the reaction and thermodynamically favorable products are formed at a higher rate. This project successfully uses microwave irradiation to perform organometallic syntheses of iron based compounds such as ferrocene and iron diene tricarbonyls.
