Section of Gastroenterology
AIM:
To investigate the prevalence of giardiasis in patients with dyspeptic symptoms.
METHODS:
Clinical records of consecutive patients who attended Gastroenterology Department at Aga Khan University Hospital from January 2000 to June 2003 and had esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with duodenal biopsies and international classification of diseases 9th revision with clinical modifications (ICD-9-CM) coded with giardiasis were studied.
RESULTS:
Two hundred and twenty patients fulfilled the above criteria. There were 44% (96/220) patients who were giardiasis positive, 72% (69/96) of them were males and 28% (27/96) of them were females. There were 65% (81/124) males and 35% (43/124) females who were giardiasis …

Candida Esophagitis: Risk Factors In Non-Hiv Population In Pakistan, Javed Yakoob, Wasim Jafri, Shahab Abid, Nadim Jafri, Muhammad Islam, Saeed Hamid, Hasnain Ali Shah, Akbar S. Hussainy
Section of Gastroenterology
AIM:
Candida esophagitis is a frequent infection in immunocompromised patients. This study was designed to determine its characteristics in non- human immune deficiency virus (HIV) infected patients attending a teaching hospital.
METHODS:
Clinical records of all patients coded by international classification of diseases 9th revision with clinical modifications' (ICD-9-CM), with candida esophagitis diagnosed by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and histopathology over a period of 5 years were studied.
RESULTS:
Fifty-one patients (27 males, 24 females, range 21-77 years old and mean age 52.9 years) fulfilled the criteria (0.34% of the EGD). The common predisposing factors were carcinoma (OR 3.87, CI 1.00-14.99) and …
Dengue And Hurricane Reconstruction - Text 2002, Frank Cortez Flores
Dengue And Hurricane Reconstruction - Text 2002, Frank Cortez Flores
Frank Cortez Flores
Unrelenting rains and savage winds, which accompany hurricanes, produce devastating mudslides and sustained flooding. In the wake of hurricanes, thousands of inhabitants face the plight of a greatly diminished capacity to go about their daily lives as a result of destroyed or severely-damaged homes, deteriorated living conditions, and increased health risks. Hurricanes inevitably aggravate the frail health of an already vulnerable segment of the population living both in and outside its destructive path. Repeated epidemics of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever afflicting millions of individuals occur annually in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, including The Caribbean and Central …
Typical Symptoms Are Predictive Of Acute Coronary Syndromes In Women, Kerry A. Milner, Marjorie Funk, Amy L. Arnold, Viola Vaccarino
Typical Symptoms Are Predictive Of Acute Coronary Syndromes In Women, Kerry A. Milner, Marjorie Funk, Amy L. Arnold, Viola Vaccarino
Nursing Faculty Publications
Background: Previous research suggests that the presentation of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) may differ in women and men. No study has prospectively evaluated the role of a comprehensive set of typical and atypical symptoms and whether different symptoms on presentation predict ACS diagnosis in women and men. Methods and Results: We directly observed 246 women and 276 men seen in the emergency department with symptoms suggestive of ACS and documented their symptoms verbatim. ACS was eventually diagnosed in 89 (36%) women and 124 (45%) men on the basis of standard electrocardiogram and cardiac enzyme criteria. Presence of typical symptoms (chest …
Attentional Processing In Parkinson's Disease: Hyperkinetic And Akinetic Type, Christine Diane Kraus
Attentional Processing In Parkinson's Disease: Hyperkinetic And Akinetic Type, Christine Diane Kraus
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Parkinson's disease (P.D.) has long been thought of as a single disorder. Recent research involving neurochemistry, neurophysiology, and detailed analysis of symptoms, have created a basis for questioning the concept that P.D. is a singular disorder. Literature suggests there may be two primary subtypes (with the possibility of others). The two probable subtypes are hyperkinetic, in which tremor is the predominate symptom and akinetic, in which, gait freezing and postural instability predominate.
In both of these pathological manifestations, several investigators have noted cognitive deficits including attention. The differences in symptomotology and neuropathology attributed to these probable subtypes suggest that there …
Dengue Fever - A Public Health Problem Along The Texas-Mexico Border, Frank Cortez Flores
Dengue Fever - A Public Health Problem Along The Texas-Mexico Border, Frank Cortez Flores
Frank Cortez Flores
My primary public health interest is the reemerging arboviral infections (e.g., dengue) that are increasing in incidence, expanding into new geographic areas, affecting new populations, and are threatening to increase in the near future, especially following a natural disaster (e.g., hurricanes). The goal of the dengue lecture series is to promote the recognition of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever and improve the understanding of factors involved in prevention, surveillance and control of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the principal mosquito vector of dengue virus. The purpose of these lectures is to accelerate learning and development of an effective dengue prevention and …
Classification And Immunophenotyping Of Acute Leukemias: A Prospective Study., Shahid Pervez, M. Khurshid
Classification And Immunophenotyping Of Acute Leukemias: A Prospective Study., Shahid Pervez, M. Khurshid
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Over a period of 3-1/2 years, 86 cases of acute leukemia were analyzed by immunohistochemical (IHC) means on ficoll separated cytospin preparations of peripheral blood and/or bone marrow samples. Antibodies included in the panel were specific against Tdt, HLA-DR, CD19/CD2O/CD22, CALLA (CD1O), CD2, CD11C as well as against Ig heavy chains. Of 86 cases analyzed, 48 cases were of ALL, (25 of common pre-B ALL, 15 of pre-B/NULL and 8 of T ALL phenotype), twenty-four (24) out of 86 cases were of nonlymphoblastic (AML/AMML) type. In six cases, there was suggestion of a mixed lineage, while in 8 cases there …

Texas Medical History E-Books
The History of Pathology in Texas is the study of the changes of disease in Texas from the frontier days to the 1990s. Marilyn Miller Baker wrote the book for the Texas Society of Pathologists. The book was published in 1996 with a forward by Vernie A. Stembridge, MD, the Ashbel Smith Professor and Chairman Emeritus of Pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. The book covers the story of pathology from the "performance of crude autopsies" on the frontier through the emergence of bacteriology and immunology and beyond.

Immunohistochemical Estrogen Receptor Determination In Human Breast Carcinoma: Correlation With Histologic Differentiation And Age Of The Patients, Shahid Pervez, S. Shaikh, F. Aijaz, S. A. Aziz, M. Naqvi, Sheema H. Hasan
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
An immunohistochemical assay for the measurement of estrogen receptor (ER) has been evaluated on 290 consecutive human breast biopsy and mastectomy specimens in the year 1992 at The Aga Khan University Hospital laboratories. Immunohistochemical localization of estrogen receptor on frozen/paraffin section was scored in a semi-quantitative fashion incorporating both the intensity and the distribution of specific staining. Histologic grading of the tumour was performed according to Bloom’s method. In this study, 21% of the tumours were estrogen receptor negative, 15% were weak positive, 25% intermediate positive and 39% strong positive. Fifty percent of the well differentiated tumours showed strong ER …

Medical Student and Faculty Lecture Notes
Notes from the lectures of Jacob Mendes Da Costa taken by 1887 graduate of Jefferson Medical College William W. H. Wehner. Jacob Mendes Da Costa served in the U.S. Army during the American Civil War and undertook research on "irritable heart" (neurocirculatory asthenia) in soldiers, research that was of landmark importance in clinical medicine. After the Civil War, Da Costa continued his teaching at the Pennsylvania Hospital (1865-1900). He began at Jefferson Medical College as a lecturer on clinical medicine (1866-1872), then professor of theory and practice of medicine (1872-1891), and finally professor emeritus (1891-1900). While Da Costa retired in …
