BACKGROUND: Acute hematogenous osteomyelitis (AHO) is a relatively infrequent but significant infection in pediatric patients. As is the most common cause of AHO, intravenous and oral first-generation cephalosporins are common therapies. Cephalexin is a commonly prescribed oral therapy for pediatric AHO, although it requires frequent dosing that may affect adherence. Cefadroxil is a comparable oral first-generation cephalosporin with a more desirable dosing schedule. METHODS: We reviewed pediatric patients admitted to Mayo Clinic between March 2002 and September 2020 for management of AHO who received treatment with a first-generation cephalosporin. We reviewed timing of oral therapy transition, therapy-associated adverse effects, and …

Indirect Determination Of Serum Creatinine Reference Intervals In A Pakistani Pediatric Population Using Big Data Analytics, Sibtain Ahmed, Jakob Zierk, Imran Siddiqui, Aysha Habib Khan

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: The indirect methods of reference intervals (RI) establishment based on data mining are utilized to overcome the ethical, practical challenges and the cost associated with the conventional direct approach.
Aim: To generate RIs for serum creatinine in children and adolescents using an indirect statistical tool.
Methods: Data mining of the laboratory information system was performed for serum creatinine analyzed from birth to 17 years for both genders. The timeline was set at six years from January 2013 to December 2018. Microsoft Excel 2010 and an indirect algorithm developed by the German Society of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine's Working …

Gliosarcoma In Patients Under 20 Years Of Age. A Clinicopathologic Study Of 11 Cases And Detailed Review Of The Literature, Nasir Ud Din, Hira Ishtiaq, Shabina Rahim, Jamshid Abdul Ghafar, Zubair Ahmad

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Gliosarcoma is a rare variant of IDH- wild type glioblastoma with both glial and mesenchymal differentiation. It accounts for approximately 2% of glioblastomas and has a poor prognosis similar to that of classic glioblastoma. It is seen mostly between 40 and 60 years of age with a mean age over 50 years. Pediatric gliosarcoma is even rarer than gliosarcoma in adults. We describe the clinicopathological features of gliosarcoma in patients under 20 years of age and determine whether there are significant differences from gliosarcoma in adults. We also present detailed review of published literature on pediatric gliosarcoma.

Palytoxin Poisoning Via Inhalation In Pediatric Siblings, Martha M. Rumore, Blaine M. Houst

Touro College of Pharmacy (New York) Publications and Research

Introduction: Several cases of palytoxin poisoning have occurred during cleaning of aquariums.

Case Report: We report a case of palytoxin inhalational toxicity in pediatric siblings following secondary exposure to vapors from cleaning of an aquarium containing Zoanthids. Symptoms included fever, tachycardia, leukocytosis and elevated lactic dehydrogenase. Both patients received supportive treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit and were discharged after 48 hours. Symptoms also occurred in children’s parents including cleaning attendant.

Conclusion: Herein, we present a rare case of inhalational toxicity from palytoxin.
