Impact Of Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (Omt) On Morbidity In Pregnant Persons Aged 18-39, Jessica-Sophie Chang Horoschak May 2023

Impact Of Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (Omt) On Morbidity In Pregnant Persons Aged 18-39, Jessica-Sophie Chang Horoschak

Background: Rates of maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States continue to rise.1 Pregnant persons are more vulnerable to stress and morbidities associated with the physiological changes of pregnancy. Low back pain and posterior pelvic pain are of high incidence experienced in pregnant persons.2 Prevention strategies are necessary to improve maternal health outcomes in the United States. Some studies have shown that Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) can be an effective treatment modality for pregnant patients experiencing somatic pain. These studies, however, are limited and of small sample size.

Purpose: To examine the current literature on the impact of OMT …

Maldi-Tof Ms Based Proteomic Fingerprinting Of Total Serum Plasma For Somatic Pain Syndromes, Isaiah Pinkerton, Venkateswar Venkataraman May 2023

There are racial and ethnic disparities regarding pain management within the United States, and that disproportionately affects women of color. There is also a fundamental lack of information regarding the biological mechanism by which pain sensitization and perception occurs, and how it could be affected by both neurologic and somatic pain syndromes.

Methods: Research was performed on principal electronic scientific databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, and Embase with search terms “MALDI-TOF”, “ESI-MS”, “Pain”, and “Biomarkers”, as well as other modifiers to narrow the literature search.

Results: Studies on comparison between MALDI-TOF and other traditional analysis platforms, including Electrospray Ionization (ESI-MS), …

The Efficacy Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment In Reducing Pain Medication Usage In Chronic Pain Patients: A Brief Literature Review, Catherine Alapatt, Kinjal Shah May 2023

The Efficacy Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment In Reducing Pain Medication Usage In Chronic Pain Patients: A Brief Literature Review, Catherine Alapatt, Kinjal Shah

Chronic pain is one of the most common complaints for adult patients. Chronic pain almost always includes a pharmacological approach which can involve opioids and non opioids. Non-pharmacological approaches are less commonly used by patients with chronic pain, despite the significant misuse of opioids in the treatment of chronic pain. There is a need for nonpharmacological therapies in the treatment of chronic pain patients to lessen the misuse of opioids. One underused form of nonpharmacological therapy for chronic pain is OMT. There have been several studies demonstrating OMT to be effective in treating chronic pain conditions. In addition, there is …

Physical Activity As A Means Of Improving Quality Of Life In Individuals With Chronic Pain, Tracy Tauro May 2022

Physical Activity As A Means Of Improving Quality Of Life In Individuals With Chronic Pain, Tracy Tauro

Pharmacologic management of chronic pain has variable results, sometimes resorting to ineffective and dangerous opioids that can potentiate substance abuse in a vulnerable population.

Exercise is unique in its ability to positively impact both the molecular and psychological aspects of chronic pain. Its role in decreasing inflammation as well as improving mental health make it an excellent option for improving quality of life.

Physicians should work with their patients to develop a patient-centered exercise plan to manage chronic pain.

The Effects Of The Covid-19 Stay-At-Home Orders On Pain And Mental Health In Omm Patients, Sylvia Orozco Silberman, Philip Collins, Danielle Cooley, James Bailey, Steven M. Brunwasser Phd, Nicholas Averell May 2022

New Jersey was placed in a state of emergency and a statewide stay-at-home order during the COVID-19 pandemic

Very little has been published examining the effects of chronic pain after stopping osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), although it seems unethical to stop a treatment shown to work so well that is both minimally invasive and cost effective

We hypothesized OMM patients experienced an increase in pain since the onset of COVID-19 pandemic and closure of OMM/Family Medicine offices

Use Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment In Alleviating Hypertonic Chest Wall Pain, David Ho, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna May 2022

Use Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment In Alleviating Hypertonic Chest Wall Pain, David Ho, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

We present the case of a 20-year-old male patient with no cardiac history coming in for left sided chest pain described as “burning” sensation. On physical exam, it was noted that patient had hypertonic chest wall muscles that were tight and spastic when palpated on the left chest wall. We used Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to help patient relieve hypertonic muscle. We chose to use muscle energy technique (MET) since this relies on reciprocal inhibition with the end result being relaxation of the target muscle.

The patient had resolution of chest pain after applying the technique. Although we did not …
