Neurophysiologic Bases For Abnormal Muscle Coactivation Patterns In Hemiparetic Stroke, Julius P.A. Dewald Dec 1992

Neurophysiologic Bases For Abnormal Muscle Coactivation Patterns In Hemiparetic Stroke, Julius P.A. Dewald

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To study disturbed muscle activation patterns in hemiparetic stroke, the EMG activity in spastic-paretic and contralateral elbow muscles of 10 stroke subjects were compared during graded directionally varying voluntary isometric contractions. We observed significant shifts in the peak EMG angle and increases in the angular range of EMG activity in the impaired upper limb. Furthermore, we observed stereotypic coactivation of many muscles acting at the same joint or at different joints across all subjects.

The effect of elbow angle changes on muscle coactivation patterns was studied by examining isometric torque-angle relations under passive and active conditions in 8 stroke subjects. …

Intracavernous Injection Of Prostaglandin E1 In Spinal Cord Injured Patient With Erectile Dysfunction: A Preliminary Report, Fuk-Tan Tang, Pong-Yuen Wong, May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Sexual dysfunction with inadequate or poorly sustained erection is a common problem among spinal cord injured patients although reflex erection may be preserved in upper motor neuron lesion and lower motor neuron and psychogenic erection may be preserved in incomplete lesion respectively. Methods to restore erection, such as vaccum tumescense constriction therapy and penile prostheses may be useful but potentially have adverse effects. Recently, intracavernous injection of prostaglandin E1 has been found beneficial to patients with neurogenic erectile dysfunction. In our study, we administered intracavernous injection of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), 15 μ g, to seven patients with neurogenic erectile dysfunction due …

Early Intervention Program For The High-Risk Prematurity, Tsui-Fen Yang, Wen Ling, Woei-Nan Bair, Chih-Chuan Kao, Ling-Yee Cheng, Tao-Chung Hsu, Shu-Jen Chen, Wen-Jen Soong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The survival rate of high-risk premature baby is increasing in recent years because of improvement in medical technology for newborn care. Unfortunately, since many of them were born with one or some risk factors, the incidence to complicate with developmental disability, learning disability, emotional or behavior problems will be higher than general population. We started early intervention program for the prematurity in PICU and SBR in Oct., 1990 especially for those high-risk prematurity who combined with one or more risk factors as below: birth weight less than 1500 gm, gestational age below 32 weeks, ventilator requirment, grade III or IV …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Severe muscular spasticity in cerebral palsy not only causes functional impairment and difficulty in daily care, but also increases the incidence of musculoskeletal complication which includes joint contracture and deformity. Clinically, many ways are used to reduce muscle spasticity, such as therapeutic exercise, antispastic medication, orthosis, phenol intramuscular neuroloysis and orthopedic surgery, etc. Basically, their effects are transient and can last for variable duration. To reduce spasticity efficiently and for long term period if not permenantly is the issue many professionals have been working on. Selective posterior rhizotomy for two spastic diplegic cerebral palsy were performed in August, 1991. They …

Follw-Up Of Children With Development Language Delay: A Preliminary Report, Sung-Hui Tseng, Baii-Jia Yang, Chi-Ren Pan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Developmental language delay is one of the most common developmental problem found in preschool children. There is increasing evidence showing that early language delay is associated with later learning and behavior problems, and the language problem may also persist into later childhood. We followed 33 cases who had been diagnosed as language delay, at least 5 years ago, by questionnair. If the children had no neurological symptom and sign except language delay, the prognosis for achieving ADL independence and average performance in school works is good. All of the children who had neurological deficit have residual language problems, and more …

Ependmoma Of The Cauda Equina, Mei-Yu Wei, Chrong-Sonq Chou, Chinn-Dong Chung, Tao-Chang Hsu Dec 1992

Ependmoma Of The Cauda Equina, Mei-Yu Wei, Chrong-Sonq Chou, Chinn-Dong Chung, Tao-Chang Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Low back pain is a frequent complaint in PM&R OPD. Tumors of the cauda equina play an uncommon but nevertheless important role in the ”sciatic syndrome”. Early detection will lower the risk of neurological sequelae. However, on clinical grounds alone, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate between a cauda equina tumor and a prolapsed interver-tebral disc. Recent advances in imaging techniques had increased the diagnostic rates. This study was based on 6 cases of ependymoma of the cauda equina, collected from January 1986 to May 1992 at VGHTC. Three of them were detected at PM&R OPD. The clinical symptoms, physical …

Polyneuropathy In Lithium Intoxication: A Casereport, Yi-Shiung Horng, Chein-Wei Chang, I-Nan Lien

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Intoxication of lithium carbonate may present as a multiple systematic dysfunction, but central and peripheral nervous involvement is rare and more troublesome. In the past, there was only one case of lithium intoxication with polyneuroparhy reported by Chang et al in Taiwan. We report here an additional 49 year-old man with manic-depressive psychosis. He received lithium carbonate medication treatment for 5 years and developed a severe cerebellar dysfunction and a mild sensori-motor polyneuropathy. Blood lithium level was 1.80meq/l two days after quitting lithium. Nerve conduction velocity studied, electromyography and sural nerve biopsy confirmed the peripheral neuropathy with marked evidence of …

Budget and the active number of mentally ill cases had a low correlation with comprehensive service delivery and staff/consumer education and training. Interagency collaboration was modestly correlated with program evaluation, and comprehensive services available to consumers. Weaknesses were noted in the management structure of …

The Effect Of Varying Weightload Intensities On Biceps Curl Technique, Jeffrey C. Gailhouse Dec 1992

The Effect Of Varying Weightload Intensities On Biceps Curl Technique, Jeffrey C. Gailhouse

Masters Theses

This study described biomechanical deviations from proper biceps curl technique specifically in the shoulder, trunk, body and knee angles, that occurred in response to varying intensities of an individual's 1 RM (repetition maximum). Ten college age males participated in the study. Subjects were required to perform one repetition at 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100% of his 1 RM. The only differentiating factor was the order in which the five intensities were performed. Condition order was randomized to minimize bias. Movement was filmed with a high-speed motion picture camera, digitized and then analyzed with computer software.

The findings indicated that …

Can Ethnography Save The Life Of Medical Ethics?, Barry Hoffmaster Nov 1992

Can Ethnography Save The Life Of Medical Ethics?, Barry Hoffmaster

C. Barry Hoffmaster

Since its inception contemporary medical ethics has been regarded by many of its practitioners as ‘applied ethics’, that is, the application of philosophical theories to the moral problems that arise in health care. This ‘applied ethics’ model of medical ethics is, however, beset with internal and external difficulties. The internal difficulties point out that the model is intrinsically flawed. The external difficulties arise because the model does not fit work in the field. Indeed, the strengths of that work are its highly nuanced, particularized analyses of cases and issues and its appreciation of the circumstances and contexts that generate and …

Evidence For The Alternative Pathway Of Complement Activation In The Nurse Shark, Lieneke Cecile Culbreath Nov 1992

Evidence For The Alternative Pathway Of Complement Activation In The Nurse Shark, Lieneke Cecile Culbreath

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Complement is activated via two pathways: classical (CCP) and alternative (ACP). The CCP has been demonstrated in the nurse shark. The ACP has not been demonstrated in any cartilagenous fish. Nurse shark serum was evaluated for complement activity by its ability to lyse heterologous erythrocytes. As CCP activity requires calcium and magnesium, activity of shark serum chelated with EGTA (a selective calcium chelator) or EDTA (a chelator of calcium and magnesium) was assessed. Activity remained in serum chelated with EGTA but not EDTA. Furthermore, activity of chelated serum was enhanced by added magnesium. Activation of shark complement by activators of …
