The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich
The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich
Theses
This thesis will focus on the causes of infant mortality in the United States. The lack of adequate prenatal care will be specifically addressed.
Research has attributed the majority of preventable infant deaths to socio-economic factors as opposed to the lack of technology. Since the percentage of the United States GNP spent on medical care continues to rise without subsequent decreases in infant deaths, it becomes necessary to focus on causal relationship.
Since a nation's infant mortality rate has long been viewed as an indicator of the country's effectiveness in meeting health needs, many areas must be targeted. The importance …
Alcoholism In The Elderly, Jo Ann Koehler
Alcoholism In The Elderly, Jo Ann Koehler
Theses
The purposes of this study were to examine the problem of alcohol abuse in the elderly, to look at the physician's understanding, detection, and treatment of this subject, and to gain knowledge regarding the older adult's view of this problem, and the willingness of these adults to discuss it openly with health professionals.
The methodology employed in this research project was qualitative. Information was obtained from both physicians and older adults through brief questionnaires. The sample consisted of 61 physicians and 47 older adults.
Findings suggest that physicians may be deficient in the knowledge needed to detect and treat alcohol …
The Ethical Judgment Of Animal Research, Shelley L. Galvin, Harold A. Herzog
The Ethical Judgment Of Animal Research, Shelley L. Galvin, Harold A. Herzog
Experimentation Collection
One hundred sixty subjects acted as members of a hypothetical Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and evaluated five proposals in which animals were to be used for research or educational purposes. They were asked to approve or reject the proposals and to indicate what factors were important in reaching their ethical decisions. Gender and differences in personal moral philosophy were related to approval decisions. The reasons given for the decisions fell into three main categories: metacognitive statements, factors related to the animal, and factors related to the design of the experiment.
Understanding The Importance Of Eperythrozoon Ovis Infection In Sheep, Marc Kabay
Understanding The Importance Of Eperythrozoon Ovis Infection In Sheep, Marc Kabay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Assigning priorities for research on sheep diseases relies in part on understanding the prevalence and economic impact of each disease.
Eperythrozoon ovis infection in sheep, for example is a common, but not costly, disease.
The Relative Effectiveness Of Programmed Instruction Versus The Lecture And Discussion Method On The Assessment Skills And Reporting Patterns Of Child Abuse And Neglect Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, Pamela Valleria Wilson Hammond
The Relative Effectiveness Of Programmed Instruction Versus The Lecture And Discussion Method On The Assessment Skills And Reporting Patterns Of Child Abuse And Neglect Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, Pamela Valleria Wilson Hammond
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The problem studied in this investigation was whether different instructional methods could increase the assessment skills and affect reporting patterns of child abuse and neglect among undergraduate students majoring in nursing.
Two hundred and nineteen nursing students were selected for inclusion in the study from two urban universities located in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The sample was predominantly female (91.3%), African-American (79.9%) and mostly under 25 years of age (67.1%).
A programmed instruction manual, Child Abuse and Neglect, a pretest booklet, and a posttest booklet were developed specifically for this research. The pretest booklets and posttest booklets contained vignettes and questions …

Phosphorylation Of The Rex Protein Of Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus Type 1, Yoshifumi Adachi, Terry D. Copeland, Chiaki Takahashi, Tetsuya Nosaka, Aftab Ahmed, Stephen Oroszlan, Masakazu Hatanaka
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Rex protein, the posttranscriptional regulator of human T-cell leukemia virus type I (HTLV-I), is required for the control of viral structural protein expression and virus replication. Rex is a phosphoprotein found predominantly in the cell nucleolus, whose function is thought to be regulated by its nucleolar localization and phosphorylation. Therefore, we investigated the in vivo phosphorylation of Rex protein in more detail. Phosphorylation of Rex occurred in all HTLV-I-infected cell lines examined in vivo, primarily at serine residues and to a very small extent at threonine residues. Treatment of cells with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) led to significant but transient enhancement of …

In Vivo Growth Of C6 Glioma Cells Transfected With Connexin43 Cdna, C. Naus, K. Elisevich, D. Zhu, Daniel Belliveau, R. Del Maestro
In Vivo Growth Of C6 Glioma Cells Transfected With Connexin43 Cdna, C. Naus, K. Elisevich, D. Zhu, Daniel Belliveau, R. Del Maestro
Daniel J. Belliveau
In order to examine the possible role of intercellular communication via gap junctions in the control of tumor growth, we have transfected C6 glioma cells with connexin43 cDNA. We obtained several clones with variable expression of connexin43. The growth rate of these clones in culture was inversely related to the degree of expression of the transfected cDNA. To examine the growth of these transfected cells in vivo, cells were grown in spinner culture flasks to form spheroids 250–300 µm in diameter. Spheroids of nontransfected C6 cells produced large gliomas. Immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization analyses revealed relatively high levels of …
