Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

The objective of this study is to determine knowledge, attitude and infection control practice of dentists on AIDS and the care for AIDS/HIV patients. Self-administered questionnaires were mailed to the dentists whom were selected by using simple random simpling technique from the list of dentists in Bangkok. In addition, questionnaires were distributed to the dentists at the meeting in Bangkok. Homeless persons with AIDS and HIV infection face significant health hazards during the daily struggle for survival on the streets and in the crowded shelters of our cities. This article offers a historical perspective on the evolution of the AIDS epidemic within the homeless population of Boston and examines the demographics, risk behaviors, and survival statistics of that epidemic. The majority of Americans view AIDS as the most important health problem faced today. Despite efforts to educate the public, the literature suggests that misperceptions exist concerning HIV transmission. The documented case of a Florida dentist who transmitted the HIV virus to five dental patients focused the public's attention on its perceived vulnerability to contracting HIV during a dental visit. The purpose' of this descriptive study was to identify the dental patient's perceived risk of acquiring the AIDS virus during a dental visit and to then determine whether the perceived risk was related to the patient's level of oral hygiene. …
