Background/aim: We compared long-term outcomes after kidney transplantation (KTx) in patients with and without congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT). Materials and methods: KTx recipients (KTRs) with CAKUT in 1980-2016 were identified; their hard copy and electronic medical records were reviewed and compared to a propensity-score-matched control group (non-CAKUT) from the same period. The primary outcomes were graft loss or death with a functioning graft; secondary outcomes included posttransplant urinary tract infections (UTIs) and biopsy-proven rejection (BPR). Results: We identified 169 KTRs with CAKUT and 169 matched controls. Median follow-up was 132 (IQR: 75.0-170.0) months. UTIs were …

Background/aim: In this study, we aimed to investigate different types of celiac antibodies in psoriasis patients and to see if the presence of the antibodies was associated with other variables. Materials and methods: We included patients with plaque psoriasis who were followed up in our dermatology clinic between February 2019 and February 2021 and added a healthy control group for comparison. The antibodies studied were serum antitissue transglutaminase (tTG)-IgA, tTG-IgG, antigliadin antibody (AGA)-IgA, and AGA-IgG. The patients' records were used to note age, sex, the pattern of psoriasis involvement, psoriasis area and severity index (PASI), presence of hypertension, presence of …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background and aim: The long-term effects of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) and maintenance programs in obstructive pulmonary diseases have not been sufficiently investigated, particularly in diseases other than COPD. This retrospective study aimed to examine the long-term results of individualized comprehensive outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with obstructive pulmonary disease. Materials and methods: This study is a single-center, retrospective cohort study. Between 2010 and 2019, 269 patients with chronic airway obstruction were treated in our multidisciplinary PR center at a tertiary training and research hospital, and they were divided into three groups based on their diagnosis: COPD, bronchiectasis, and asthma. Patients' …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of bilateral inferior petrosal sinus sampling (IPSS) in lateralization and to investigate variables associated with accurate IPSS lateralization prediction. Materials and methods: Initially, data from 55 patients who underwent IPSS in our institution were reviewed retrospectively. IPSS lateralization and pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results of these patients were compared with postoperative follow-up and immunohistochemical data to calculate the positive predictive values (PPVs) for IPSS and MRI. Variables likely to be associated with the accurate prediction of IPSS lateralization were analyzed. Results: Twenty-seven patients (85.2% female, mean age of …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: As SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread worldwide, this study brings to light the link that anakinra, a recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist, has in averting grave clinical outcomes. The objectives of this meta-analysis are to investigate the effects of anakinra in interventional groups compared to control/standard of care groups on mortality along with the provision of a prevalence estimate of the variables associated with death (C-reactive protein-CRP, ferritin, acute respiratory distress syndrome-ARDS). Materials and methods: According to the PRISMA 2020 statement guidelines, a systematic search was conducted from December 19, 2020, until December 10, 2021, with keywords including COVID-19, coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, …

Evidence-Based Information About Intermittent Fasting In Diabetes Patients: Useful Or Harmful?, Mustafa Altay
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: One of the most important components of treatment for diabetic patients is diet and healthy nutrition therapy. Calorie restriction is effective and without cost increases its appeal for both patients and physicians. Unfortunately, continuous calorie restriction is a difficult method. For this reason, alternative calorie restriction methods, such as intermittent fasting (IF), have been investigated by some researchers. Materials and methods: IF refers to a wide range of diet programmes covering periods of eating and fasting, which vary according to the different regimens. In this article, first, some general information will enable us to understand the concept of IF, …

Complementary Medicines Used In Ulcerative Colitis And Unintended Interactions With Cytochrome P450-Dependent Drug-Metabolizing Enzymes, Alaatti̇n Şen
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an idiopathic, chronic inflammatory disease with multiple genetic and a variety of environmental risk factors. Although current drugs significantly aid in controlling the disease, many people have led to the application of complementary therapies due to the common belief that they are natural and safe, as well as due to the consideration of the side effect of current drugs. Curcumin, cannabinoids, wheatgrass, Boswellia, wormwood and Aloe vera are among the most commonly used complementary medicines in UC. However, these treatments may have adverse and toxic effects due to unintended interactions with drugs or drugmetabolizing enzymes such …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Microcystic, elongated, and fragmented (MELF) pattern is one of the myometrial invasion patterns in endometrioid endometrial carcinoma (EEC), and it has been associated with poor prognostic parameters, especially lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) and lymph node metastasis (LNM). This study aims to represent the frequency of MELF pattern in EEC and the relationship between MELF pattern with clinicopathological parameters, overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS). Materials and methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we examined 233 patients with EEC diagnoses with the result of a total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy between 2009 and 2014. The association of MELF pattern …
