Chronic pancreatitis is a benign disease often characterized by recurrent episodes of abdominal pain accompanied by progressive pancreatic exocrine and endocrine insufficiency; it sometimes requires multiple hospitalizations. This disease is frequently the result of chronic alcohol abuse, even if other factors such as genetic alterations, autoimmune disorders, and obstructive disease of the biliary tract and the pancreas may cause the disease. Aim: Delta32 polymorphism in the chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) gene affects human immune deficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) entry, transmission, and outcome. The aim of this study was to determine the allelic frequencies of genetic variant CCR5delta32, which influence susceptibility to HIV-1 infection, in a northern Turkish population. Materials and Methods: We determined the allelic frequencies of CCR5delta32 in 449 unrelated healthy individuals from the central Black Sea coastal region without any known history of HIV-1 infection. Aim: Community-acquired infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria are an emerging problem. Digestive tract colonization is a prerequisite for infections by ESBL-producing microorganisms. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for fecal carriage of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) or Klebsiella spp. in the community. Aim: The purpose of this study was to compare the water sorption and solubility of four provisional, three permanent luting cements and five restorative cements. Methods: A split ring mould was fabricated for the preparation of specimen discs which were 15.0 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm thick. All specimens were manipulated according to the manufacturer's instructions and then subjected to water sorption and solubility tests. Data were analysed with Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Background and Aim: Prenatal diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities is usually performed on amniotic fluid samples. Aneuploidy screening by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), although not an alternative for conventional cytogenetics, has become a useful tool. Materials and Methods: We compared the results of FISH and conventional cytogenetic analysis applied on 51 amniotic fluid samples between January 2002 and December 2005, in our Cytogenetics Laboratory. Amniocytes were extracted using 5 cc of the sample, and direct FISH was applied using an AneuVysion Assay Kit (Vysis). Aim: The purpose of this study was to measure serum prolidase activity and interleukin-2 and 6 (IL-2, IL-6) levels and to investigate the relationship of these parameters with bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover markers in postmenopausal women with and without osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: 59 postmenopausal women were included in this study (21 women with osteoporosis and 38 without). Aim: Deficiency of cobalamin and folate during pregnancy is associated with megaloblastic anemia. Lower levels of folate and vitamin B12 were reported in mothers whose offspring had neural tube defects compared to unaffected controls. Increased methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels are a sensitive indicator of mild vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels denote vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. Giant hydronephrosis (GH) is a rare entity that may mimic progressive and benign abdominal cystic tumors. Despite the increase in the use of prenatal ultrasound, GH may still be seen in the adult population. We report a case of GH in a 19-year-old female who presented with a progressive abdominal distention and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Diagnostic and therapeutic features of this rare case are discussed in light of the current literature.

Congenital gastrointestinal duplications are rare, and gastric duplication cysts are even rarer. Most cases are seldom diagnosed preoperatively. We present a case of gastric duplication cyst, which in preoperative imaging studies mimicked a hydatid/pseudocyst of the pancreas. The diagnosis was made only intraoperatively and was confirmed by histopathological examination of the completely excised cyst.

Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disorder. The diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis requires the presence of two major or one major and two minor features. Aim: The precise pathogenetic mechanisms causing thrombotic complications in Behçet´s disease (BD) are still not known. To explain the pathogenesis with coagulation induction or a defective fibrinolysis superimposed on endothelial dysfunction, various hemostatic parameters were studied. Congenital diaphragmatic eventration is an uncommon condition in adults and is defined as an abnormal elevation of the diaphragm. In adults, diaphragmatic eventration causes respiratory impairment that is associated with severe dyspnea, orthopnea and hypoxia. Most of the symptomatic patients may survive with supportive therapy without any need for surgical correction, though they are at risk of spontaneous diaphragm rupture. Clinical manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) include repeated episodes of arterial and/or venous thrombosis, recurrent fetal wastage, and premature births. Correct diagnosis of APS requires identification of lupus anticoagulant (LA) and anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL). Other antibodies such as anti-b2 glycoprotein-I have also been detected. A 32-year-old man presented with acute left-sided hemiplegia and was admitted with a possible diagnosis of primary APS. A pulmonary embolus-in-transit was captured incidentally by transthoracic echocardiographic study.

Aim: Increasing intracuff pressure and postoperative laryngotracheal complications are the important issues in nitrous oxide anesthesia. The Lanz® endotracheal tube is a new kind of tube with a pressure-regulating valve. We aimed to investigate whether or not this tube may be useful in nitrous oxide anesthesia in terms of postoperative laryngotracheal complications. Materials and Methods: The study included 70 female patients, aged 18-60 years. Patients were intubated with the standard endotracheal tube in Group S (n = 35) and the Lanz® endotracheal tube in Group M (n = 35). Aim: The exposure of blood to foreign surfaces during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) leads to an activation of the coagulation system. The goal of this study was to evaluate the levels of protein C and protein S, tissue-plasminogen activator (t-PA) and fibrinogen before, during and after CPB. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate nasopharyngeal colonization of respiratory tract pathogens and nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in healthy schoolchildren (6-14 years old). Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted at Konuralp Primary School by Düzce University and 484 healthy children were included. Isolates obtained from nasal and nasopharyngeal cultures were identified by conventional microbiological procedures and Api 20 strep, NH. Isolated tuberculous inguinal lymphadenitis is a rare entity and is usually bilateral. A 16-year- old male presented with anorexia, nocturnal sweating and painless soft right inguinal lymph nodes. The patient underwent excision of lymph nodes and a Ziehl-Neelsen stain revealed the presence of acid-fast bacilli, but cultures of the lymph nodes were negative. Histological sections showed the presence of caseous necrosis and epithelioid cell granuloma. He had a positive tuberculin skin test (Mantoux) with 22 mm diameter. The patient was diagnosed as tuberculous lymphadenitis with these findings. Tuberculosis should be included in the differential diagnosis in any case of isolated …

Penile fractures are classically described as presenting with rapid detumescence of an erection associated with blunt trauma. This clinical finding is due to a tear in the tunica albuginea surrounding the corpora cavernosum. In this study, we report and discuss a case of trichotillomania and penile bending impulse resulting in penile fracture, which was operated in the urology clinic. The possible psychological and psychiatric problems underlying the impulsive behavior are discussed, and the value of a psychiatric evaluation is emphasized.

Aim: To develop a sensitive automated colorimetric urine copper determination method using a water soluble compound, 2-(5-nitro-2-pyridylazo)-5-(N-propyl-N-sulfopropylamino) phenol (nitro-PAPS), as a ligand. Materials and Methods: The new photometric method using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-ascorbic acid to dissociate copper from proteins in acetate buffer (pH 3.2) and nitro-PAPS as ligand was also adapted to an automated analyzer.
