Background/aim: Lack of early predictors of acute kidney injury is currently delaying timely diagnosis.This study was done to evaluate the relationship between mild to moderate proteinuria and incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) and 28-day mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Material and methods: This observational, retrospective study was conducted in the internal medicine ICU. A total of 796 patients were screened and 525 patients were used for this analysis. Background/aim: We aimed to investigate the associations between endothelial nitric oxide synthase(eNOS) gene polymorphisms [G894T (rs1799983)], intron 4 (27-bpTR) variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) and T786C (rs2070744), and ischemic stroke in the Anatolian population.Materials and methods: This case-control study included 112 patients with "stroke of undetermined etiology" and 160 controls. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis was used to analyze these polymorphisms. Between-group frequencies of alleles and genotypes were compared using binary logistic regression analysis.Results: No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of the genotype and allele distributions of the eNOS G894T (rs1799983) polymorphism (P > 0.05). …

Background/aim: The aim of this study is to present the results of modified combined decongestive therapy (CDT) in patients with lower extremity lymphedema (LEL). Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed 95 patients aged 55.84 ± 15.70 years who had been diagnosed with LEL between May 2015 and May 2017. The patients were treated for 4 weeks with modified CDT, including self-manual lymphatic drainage, self-bandaging, decongestive exercises, and skin care.Results: The mean reduction amounts of edema volume before and after treatment were 296.05, 784.92, and 1038.50 mL for stages 1, 2, and 3 respectively (P = 0.001). Background/aim: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease. The effect of psoriasis on the cardiovascular system has not been studied in children before. We studied ventricular strain and vascular functions to assess early cardiovascular effects of psoriasis during childhood. Materials and methods: The study population consisted of 20 psoriatic and 20 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Background/aim: This study aimed to reveal the optimum recording time of routine electroencephalogram (EEG) for adults with epilepsy.Materials and methods: In this clinical observational study we investigated features of paroxysms that emerged in EEGs recorded for 45 min in adults with epilepsy.Results: Paroxysms were detected in 38.14% of 97 patients. The probability of occurrence of paroxysm during the first 10 min was found to be statistically significantly low in comparison to the first 30 and 45 min (respectively P = 0.004, P = 0.0001). Background/aim: Intraabdominal pressure (IAP) is one of the main reasons for gastroesophageal reflux (GER). This study investigates whether IAP during laparoscopic surgery leads to GER in a time-dependent manner.Materials and methods: In a laparoscopy model, 15 mmHg IAP was created in 8 Wistar albino rats in the Trendelenburg position (TP). A 5 mm laparotomy was performed in the left lower abdominal region, and a 6 Fr catheter was placed intraabdominally. Background/aim: To assess the efficacy and side effects of concurrent weekly chemotherapy and radiotherapy with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) technique for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). Materials and methods: A total of 51 consecutive patients with diagnosis of NPC were treated between February 2010 and December 2015. The median dose for PTV70 (range: 60-82) was given in 33 fractions (range: 31-35). Forty-five of the patients received concomitant weekly chemotherapy between 3-7 cycles (median 6). Background/aim: The aim was to investigate the protective and therapeutic effects of ghrelin, which has antioxidant and antiinflammatory activity, on preventing kidney damage that occurs by induced partial ureteral obstruction in rats.Materials and methods: Twenty-eight adult male rats were included in the study, and the rats were divided into 4 groups. Background/aim: Verrucous epidermal nevi are cutaneous hamartomas with many clinical variants. Dermoscopic features of verrucous epidermal nevus have rarely been investigated. We aimed to identify dermoscopic findings of the entity which will facilitate the diagnostic process by reducing the use of invasive diagnostic methods. Materials and methods: The study included the patients with histopathologically approved verrucous epidermal nevus. Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of vascular indices obtained using 3D power Doppler ultrasound (3D PDUS) in differentiation of benign and malignant thyroid nodules.Materials and methods: Sixty-seven patients (56 female, 11 male, mean age 44.6) with 81 thyroid nodules exhibiting mixed (peripheral and central) vascularization patterns, with the largest diameter between 10 and 30 mm, were prospectively evaluated using 3D PDUS. Background/aim: Defective vascularization may be important in thyroid nodular disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in dyslipidemic patients with thyroid nodules, as well as the effects of statin therapy.Materials and methods: The study included 37 dyslipidemic patients with thyroid nodules and 32 dyslipidemic patients without thyroid nodules. Anthropometry, serum VEGF levels, biochemical parameters, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (fT3) and free thyroxine (fT4) levels, and thyroid sonography were determined before and after 6 months of statin therapy.
