Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It is known that renin-angiotensin system, inflammation, signaling pathways, and genetic predisposition play a major role in the pathogenesis of heart valve disease. Scarring and collagen deposition in the valves and destruction of myocytes may result from the combined effects of rheumatic and degenerative process in heart valve diseases. Prolidase plays an important role in collagen metabolism, matrix remodeling and cell growth. The aim of the study was to comparatively assess the serum prolidase activity in rheumatic and degenerative heart valve diseases. Materials and methods: The study included 26 patients who had undergone valve replacement due to rheumatic etiology (Group …

The Clinical And Polysomnographic Features In Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome, Handan İnönü, Tansu Ulukavak Çi̇ftçi̇, Oğuz Köktürk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Complex sleep apnea syndrome (CompSAS) is characterized by the onset of central apneas or a Cheyne-Stokes breathing pattern in some patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) who were treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). The etiology of CompSAS is unclear, but derangement of respiratory control has been proposed. We sought to compare clinical and polysomnography (PSG) features of patients with CompSAS and OSAS. Materials and methods: Records of PSG were evaluated in a total of 270 patients, retrospectively. CPAP titration was prescribed in patients with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of >=15. Patients who developed a central AHI of …

Cancer And Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation, Yavuz Emre Şükür, Batuhan Özmen, Murat Sönmezer Jan 2010

Cancer And Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation, Yavuz Emre Şükür, Batuhan Özmen, Murat Sönmezer

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Although ovarian tissue cryopreservation is still accepted as an experimental procedure, it has recently become an increasingly resorted technique in highly specialized in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics. Its indications include many childhood cancers, breast cancer, some autoimmune diseases, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and pelvic radiation therapy due to solid tumors. The chemotherapeutics and radiation therapy may diminish ovarian reserve and cause premature ovarian failure. It currently seems as the only option for fertility preservation in children where ovulation induction is ethically not acceptable, and for those when cytotoxic therapy is urgent. There are 2 main methods for transplantation of frozen-thawed …

It is demonstrated that in end-stage renal failure without an infectious pathology conventional laboratory parameters such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) or other acute-phase proteins increase non-specifically. We aimed to evaluate procalcitonin (PCT) and other inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in patients with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)-related peritonitis. Materials and methods: A case-control study was conducted in a 600-bed tertiary hospital. Fifty patients with CAPD-related peritonitis constituting the study group and 50 CAPD patients without infection as the control group were included in the study between February 2006 …
