A Combinatorial Cost-Benefit Analysis Methodology For Designing Modular Electronic Products For The Environment, Pitipong Veerakamolmal, Surendra Gupta Oct 2010

A Combinatorial Cost-Benefit Analysis Methodology For Designing Modular Electronic Products For The Environment, Pitipong Veerakamolmal, Surendra Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

This paper presents a technique to analyze the efficiency of designing electronic products for the environment. The efficiency of each design is indicated using a Design for Disassembly Index (DfDI). DfDI uses a disassembly tree (DT) which relies on the product's bill of materials as its structural blueprint. DfDI can be used to compare the efficiency among alternative designs, identifying the best alternative for a product retirement plan. In addition, the index offers designers with an important measure to help improve future products.

Disassembly Petri Net Generation In The Presence Of Xor Precedence Relationships, K. E. Moore, Askiner Gungor, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

A disassembly process plan (DPP) is a sequence of disassembly tasks which begins with a product to be disassembled and terminates in a state where all the parts of interest are disconnected. Disassembly process planning is critical for minimizing the resources invested in disassembly and maximizing the level of automation of the disassembly process and the quality of the parts (or materials) recovered. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which automatically generates a disassembly PN (DPN) from a geometrically-based disassembly precedence matrix (DPM). This algorithm can be used to generate DPPs for products which contain simple AND, OR, complex …

A Multi-Phase Mathematical Programming Approach To Strategic Planning Of An Efficient Reverse Supply Chain Network, Kishore Pochampally, Surendra Gupta Oct 2010

A Multi-Phase Mathematical Programming Approach To Strategic Planning Of An Efficient Reverse Supply Chain Network, Kishore Pochampally, Surendra Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

Strategic planning of a supply chain network is one of the most challenging aspects of reverse logistics. To effectively satisfy drivers such as profitability, environmental regulations and asset recovery, only the most economical used products must be reprocessed in only the recovery facilities that have the potential to efficiently reprocess them. Due to uncertainties in supply, quality and reprocessing times of used-products, the cost-benefit function in the literature that selects the most economical product to reprocess from a set of used-products is not appropriate for direct adoption. Moreover, due to the same uncertainties, any traditional forward supply chain approach to …

Disassembly-To-Order System Using Linear Physical Programming, Elif Kongar, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

One of the most responsible ways of processing end-of-life (EOL) products is to minimize their disposal to landfills by reusing, remanufacturing and/or recycling them. Often, this necessitates a certain level of disassembly. It is therefore necessary to plan disassembly processing efficiently so as to minimize costs and the amount of disposal as well as to maximize reuse, remanufacturing and recycling. In this paper, we present a disassembly-to-order system to determine the number of EOL products to process to fulfill a certain demand for products, parts and/or materials under a variety of objectives and constraints using a newly developed decision tool, …

Structural And Mechanical Properties Of Nanostructured Tio2 Thin Films Deposited By Rf Sputtering

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

This study mainly aims to evaluate the effects of substrate temperatures on the mechanical properties of TiO2 thin films deposited on glass substrates by radio-frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. All titania films possess anatase structure having a nodular morphology. AES results reveal that Si and Na ions from glass diffuse into TiO2 films at higher substrate temperatures. Micro-scratch and wear tests were conducted to evaluate their mechanical and tribological properties. The adhesion critical loads of TiO2 films deposited at room temperature, 200 and 300°C are found to be 1.51, 1.54 and 1.08N, respectively. Scratch hardness also increases from 11.5 to 13.6GPa …

Do Surfaces With Mixed Hydrophilic And Hydrophobic Areas Enhance Pool Boiling?, Amy Rachel Betz, Jie Xu, Huihe Qiu, Daniel Attinger

Daniel Attinger

We demonstrate that smooth and flat surfaces combining hydrophilic and hydrophobicpatterns improve pool boiling performance. Compared to a hydrophilicsurface with 7° wetting angle, the measured critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficients of the enhanced surfaces are, up to respectively, 65% and 100% higher. Different networks combining hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions are characterized. While all tested networks enhance the heat transfer coefficient, large enhancements of critical heat flux are typically found for hydrophilic networks featuring hydrophobic islands. Hydrophilic networks indeed are shown to prevent the formation of an insulating vapor layer.

Smart Growth (SG) development entails retracting the city; hence, it aims to house low-income residents at new affordable housing facilities within a metropolitan area. On the other hand, the dense living conditions would cause land price to surge due to the scarcity of available land. In this situation, housing developers would be more burdened by high land costs and the low-income families have no alternatives than pay high rental prices to building owners. This research comprises of constructs developed from selected literature review on Smart Growth concept and criteria of importance in meeting the Affordable Quality Housing standards (QOL indicators). …

Modeling Large Modern Fossil-Fueled Steam-Electric Power Plant And Its Coordinated Control System For Power System Dynamic Analysis, Lin Gao

Lin Gao

Fossil-fueled steam-electric power plants have many outstanding advantages and are still one of the main power types in the world especially for non-European countries. The classic mathematic models are designed for traditional hydraulic governing steam turbine units. Single turbine and its control system models are used wildly for dynamic analysis in power system. Digital electro-hydraulic (DEH) control systems and coordinated control systems (CCS) are used in most of the modern large power boiler-turbine units. They are key elements in the operation of the power station and have great impact on the system responses to the frequency or load disturbances. But …

A Short-Distance Integral-Balance Solution To A Strong Subdiffusion Equation: A Weak Power-Law Profile, Jordan Hristov

Jordan Hristov

The work presents an integral solution of the time-fractional subdiffusion through a preliminary defined profile with unknown coefficients and the concept of penetration layer well known from the heat diffusion The profile satisfies the boundary conditions imposed at the boundary of the boundary layer in a weak form that allows its coefficients to be expressed through the boundary layer depth as unique parameter describing the profile. The technique is demonstrated by a solution of a time fractional subdiffusion equation in rectilinear 1-D conditions.

We demonstrate and explain a simple and efficient way to remove gas bubbles from liquid-filled microchannels, by integrating a hydrophobic porous membrane on top of the microchannel. A prototype chip is manufactured in hard, transparent polymer with the ability to completely filter gas plugs out of a segmented flow at rates up to 7.4 μl/s/mm2 of membrane area. The device involves a bubble generation section and a gas removal section. In the bubble generation section, a T-junction is used to generate a train of gas plugs into a water stream. These gas plugs are then transported toward the gas removal …

Ultra-Thin-Film Aln Contour-Mode Resonators For Sensing Applications, Matteo Rinaldi, Chiara Zuniga, Gianluca Piazza

Matteo Rinaldi

This paper reports on the design and experimental verification of a new class of ultra-thin-film (250 nm) aluminum nitride (AlN) microelectromechanical system (MEMS) contour mode resonators (CMRs) suitable for the fabrication of ultra-sensitive gravimetric sensors. The device thickness was opportunely scaled in order to increase the mass sensitivity, while keeping a constant frequency of operation. In this first demonstration the resonance frequency of the device was set to 178 MHz and a mass sensitivity as high as 38.96 KHz⋅μm2/fg was attained. This device demonstrates the unique capability of the CMR-S technology to decouple resonance frequency from mass sensitivity.

Dynamic Programming For Solving Disassembly-To-Order System Under Stochastic Yields, Limited Supply, And Quantity Discount, Amre Massoud, Surendra Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

In this paper, we consider the disassembly-to-order (DTO) problem where a variety of returned end-of-life (EOL) products are disassembled in order to satisfy the demand for specified numbers of components. However, a lot of uncertainties exist in the disassembly process that further complicates the process. A DTO model has been developed that takes into consideration the different system uncertainties and variability. The DTO model was solved in multiple periods using dynamic programming (DP). The main objective was to determine optimal number of takeback EOL products in every period from each supplier to fulfill the demand of components while maximizing total …

The Effect Of Disassembly Process On Spare Parts Inventory Management In Post Product Life Cycle, Mehmet Ali Ilgin, Surendra M. Gupta Sep 2010

The Effect Of Disassembly Process On Spare Parts Inventory Management In Post Product Life Cycle, Mehmet Ali Ilgin, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

Timely and cost-effective acquisition of spare parts at post product life cycle (PPLC) is a challenging task due to limited supply of new spare parts. The most commonly used solution to this problem is the placement of a final order in the beginning of PPLC. Another alternative is the use of disassembled parts from End of Life (EOL) products. In this study, we consider both alternatives at the same time. First, a detailed discrete event simulation (DES) model of a disassembly line is developed. Then, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is integrated with the DES model for the optimization of Final …

An Optimization Framework For Advanced Disassembly/Repair-To-Order Systems With Remaining-Life Adjustment, Onder Ondemir, Surendra Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

Due to environmental awareness and realization of cost savings, disassembly-to-order (DTO) concept has become popular. One of the main obstacles to making optimal DTO decisions is the uncertainty involved in end-of-life products (EOLPs). This uncertainty is due to the lack of information about the condition and the quantity of EOLPs returned. This uncertainty is removed by advanced disassembly/repair-to-order systems utilizing sensors to monitor the products in their life-cycle. Sensor technology enables remaining life estimation, thus allows advanced DTO models to deal with sophisticated component and product demands with remaining life adjustment. This paper presents an optimization framework for advanced disassembly/repair-to-order …

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To End-Of-Life Disassembly Sequencing For Robotic Disassembly, Ahmed Elsayed, Elif Kongar, Surendra M. Gupta

Surendra M. Gupta

End-of-life (EOL) processing options include reuse, remanufacturing, recycling and proper disposal. In almost all cases, a certain level of disassembly may be required due to possible changes in the original product structure. Thus, finding an optimal or near optimal disassembly sequence is crucial to increasing the efficiency of the process. Disassembly operations are labor intensive, can be costly, have unique characteristics and cannot be considered as reverse of assembly operations. Since the complexity of determining the best disassembly sequence increases as the number of parts of the product grow, an efficient methodology is reuired for disassembly sequencing. In this paper, …
