Transient Small Wind Turbine Tower Structural Analysis With Coupled Rotor Dynamic Interaction, George R. Katsanis
Transient Small Wind Turbine Tower Structural Analysis With Coupled Rotor Dynamic Interaction, George R. Katsanis
Master's Theses
Structural dynamics is at the center of wind turbine tower design - excessive vibrations can be caused by a wide range of environmental and mechanical sources and can lead to reduced component life due to fatigue, noise, and impaired public perception of system integrity. Furthermore, periodic turbulent wind conditions can cause system resonance resulting in significantly increased structural loads. Structural vibration issues may become exacerbated in small wind applications where the analytical and experimental resources for system verification and optimization are scarce. This study combines several structural analysis techniques and packages them into a novel and integrated form that can …
Calibration And Optimization Of A Load Sensor Embedded In A Railroad Bearing Adapter, Lorenzo Saenz Iv
Calibration And Optimization Of A Load Sensor Embedded In A Railroad Bearing Adapter, Lorenzo Saenz Iv
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Freight railcars rely heavily on weigh bridges and stations to determine cargo load. As a consequence, all load measurements are limited to certain locations and specified prices. To this end, this study presents work performed to develop one of the first economical, reliable sensors for keeping track of both dynamic and static loads on a freight railcar. Preliminary testing provided a strain-gauge based sensor that delivered load information in the laboratory environment. Federal Railroad Association (FRA) protocol testing was met and consistent results were obtained from the sensing device. The latter allowed for an optimized sensor that could potentially deliver …

Numerical Simulation And Optimization Of Co2 Sequestration In Saline Aquifers, Zheming Zhang
Numerical Simulation And Optimization Of Co2 Sequestration In Saline Aquifers, Zheming Zhang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
With heightened concerns on CO2 emissions from pulverized-coal power plants, there has been major emphasis in recent years on the development of safe and economical Geological Carbon Sequestration: GCS) technology. Although among one of the most promising technologies to address the problem of anthropogenic global-warming due to CO2 emissions, the detailed mechanisms of GCS are not well-understood. As a result, there remain many uncertainties in determining the sequestration capacity of the formation/reservoir and the safety of sequestered CO2 due to leakage. These uncertainties arise due to lack of information about the detailed interior geometry of the formation and the heterogeneity …
Multiobjective Plan Selection Optimization For Traffic Responsive Control, Montasir M. Abbas, Anuj Sharma
Multiobjective Plan Selection Optimization For Traffic Responsive Control, Montasir M. Abbas, Anuj Sharma
Anuj Sharma
Optimal coordination of traffic signals requires proper activation of timing plans to match current traffic conditions. One of the greatest challenges in configuring a traffic responsive plan selection control mode is how to select only n number of timing plans (restricted by traffic controller memory limitations) to address possibly all traffic conditions/states that can be encountered in the field, for a specific site, but most importantly, how to associate each of these traffic conditions to one of the n timing plans stored in the traffic controller. This paper uses a multiobjective non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm to (1) select the best …

A Real-Time Crane Service Scheduling Decision Support System (Css-Dss) For Construction Tower Cranes, Amir Tork
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The success of construction projects depends on proper use of construction equipment and machinery to a great extent. Thus, appropriate planning and control of the activities that rely on construction equipment could have significant effects on improving the efficiency of project operations. Cranes are the largest and most conspicuous construction equipment, widely used in typical construction sites. They play a major role in relocation of materials in horizontal and vertical directions on construction sites. Given the nature of activities relying on construction cranes in various stages of a project, cranes normally have control over the critical path of the project …
A Hybrid Constitutive Model For Creep, Fatigue, And Creep-Fatigue Damage, Calvin Stewart
A Hybrid Constitutive Model For Creep, Fatigue, And Creep-Fatigue Damage, Calvin Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the combustion zone of industrial- and aero- gas turbines, thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) is the dominant damage mechanism. Thermomechanical fatigue is a coupling of independent creep, fatigue, and oxidation damage mechanisms that interact and accelerate microstructural degradation. A mixture of intergranular cracking due to creep, transgranular cracking due to fatigue, and surface embrittlement due to oxidation is often observed in gas turbine components removed from service. The current maintenance scheme for gas turbines is to remove components from service when any criteria (elongation, stress-rupture, crack length, etc.) exceed the designed maximum allowable. Experimental, theoretical, and numerical analyses are performed to …
Automated Hybrid Singularity Superposition And Anchored Grid Pattern Bem Algorithm For The Solution Of The Inverse Geometric Problem, Marcus Ni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A method for solving the inverse geometrical problem is presented by reconstructing the unknown subsurface cavity geometry using boundary element methods, a genetic algorithm, and Nelder-Mead non-linear simplex optimization. The heat conduction problem is solved utilizing the boundary element method, which calculates the difference between the measured temperature at the exposed surface and the computed temperature under the current update of the unknown subsurface flaws and cavities. In a first step, clusters of singularities are utilized to solve the inverse problem and to identify the location of the centroid(s) of the subsurface cavity(ies)/flaw(s). In a second step, the reconstruction of …

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet
Alternative configurations based on cryogenic extractive distillation for the natural gas sweetening process were proposed and simulated by using Aspen Plus One 7.0 coupled to a multi-objective stochastic optimization procedure (Differential Evolution, DE). The evaluation of the performances of the proposed configurations was focused on the carbon dioxide-ethane azeotrope separation considering different liquefied hydrocarbon fractions as entrainers. The design alternatives were compared to the conventional chemical absorption system. The proposed sequences were simultaneously optimized by minimizing the Total Annual Cost (TAC) and maximizing the acid gas removal. Complementary studies regarding the theoretical control properties, thermodynamic efficiency and greenhouse gases generation …

Optimization And Modeling Of Extraction Of Solid Coconut Waste Oil, Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman
Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman
Solid coconut waste was produced after coconut milk extraction process and may still contain up to 24 wt.% oil content. In this work, extraction of oil from coconut waste using batch and soxhlet extractor was studied. Effect of particle size diameter, type of solvent and solvent to solid ratio on the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters; entropy, enthalpy and free energy of extraction were investigated. The maximum oil yields for soxhlet and batch reactor were 23.6% at 80 °C and 21.9% at 65 °C, respectively for particle size diameter <0.5 mm when hexane was used as solvent. The kinetic of coconut waste oil extraction was found to be a first order mass transfer model. The ΔG, ΔS and ΔH values were 10.94–13.35 kJ/mol, 33.10–39.57 J/mol K and 0.12–1.25 kJ/mol, respectively shows that the extraction process was spontaneous, irreversible and endothermic based on thermodynamic parameters.

The performance of alkalis (NaOH and Ca(OH)2) and acids (H2SO4, HCl, H3PO4, CH3COOH, and HNO3) in the pretreatment of rice husk was screened, and a suitable reagent was assessed for subsequent optimisation using response surface methodology. From the assessment, HCl that hydrolysed rice husk well was optimised with three parameters (HCl loading, pretreatment duration, and temperature) using Box-Behnken Design. The optimised condition (0.5% (w/v) HCl loading, 125oC, 1.5 hours) is relatively mild, and resulted in ~22.3 mg TRS/ml hydrolysate. The reduced model developed has good predictability, where the predicted and experimental results differ by only 2%. The comprehensive structural characterization …

Synthesis And Optimization Of Pedot:Pss Based Ink For Printing Nanoarrays Using Dip-Pen Nanolithography, Michal Wagner, Cathal O'Connell, David G. Harman, Ryan Sullivan, Ari Ivaska, Michael J. Higgins, Gordon G. Wallace
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Due to the current interest in organic printable electronics, Dip-Pen Nanolithography (DPN) is increasingly being explored as a method to pattern electroactive materials such as conducting polymers (CPs) on the micro- and nanoscale. In general, printing process depends strongly on the ink-substrate properties and fundamental forces required to drive and stabilize the ink transfer to the substrate. Controlling these parameters is especially difficult when operating under the nanometer confinements of the DPN probe. For the printing of CPs, one step towards addressing these challenges is rational ink design, as the use of existing commercial-based inks may not be suitable for …

Sizing Optimization Of Trapezoidal Corrugated Roof Sheeting, Supporting Solar Panels, Under Wind Loading, P Sharafi, Lip H. Teh, Muhammad N. S Hadi
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The dimensions of trapezoidal roof sheeting supporting solar panels are optimized so that a minimum amount of steel is required for a specific range of wind loads. Sheets of different grades and different thicknesses along with different ranges of wind speeds are considered. In order to simulate the behavior of the corrugated sheets analysis is carried out for two limit states: strength and serviceability. For both limit states, the objective is to minimize the weight per unit area of the panels. First, optimum cross-section is obtained to meet the strength conditions. Then the deflection is controlled for serviceability. The optimum …

Finfet Device Optimization At 15nm For Near-Threshold Operation, Jolene Singh
Open Access Theses
Much of the current research in the electronic industry focuses on reducing power consumption of digital circuits. Towards the same many attempts are being made to reduce the operating voltage of the circuits. It has been shown through device and circuit analysis that a circuit consumes minimum energy when operated near threshold voltage. In this thesis I vary device parameters and study their effects on energy consumption and delay of the device for the two regions of operation - superthreshold and near-threshold, using LUTs of IV and CV characteristics, verilogA and hSpice. Finally, device parameters are obtained for an optimum …

Time Domain Simulation Of Novel Photovoltaic Materials, Haejun Chung
Open Access Theses
Thin-film silicon-based solar cells have operated far from the Shockley- Queisser limit in all experiments to date. Novel light-trapping structures, however, may help address this limitation. Finite-difference time domain simulation methods offer the potential to accurately determine the light-trapping potential of arbitrary dielectric structures, but suffer from materials modeling problems. In this thesis, existing dispersion models for novel photovoltaic materials will be reviewed, and a novel dispersion model, known as the quadratic complex rational function (QCRF), will be proposed. It has the advantage of accurately fitting experimental semiconductor dielectric values over a wide bandwidth in a numerically stable fashion. Applying …

By including these variables in a detailed model integrating biology, chemistry, engineering, and financial aspects, a more defined systems analysis is possible. Through optimizing the model productivity based on the resulting net profit, the system analysis results in a more accurate assessment of environmental and economic sustainability of specific algal growth scenarios. Photobioreactor algal growth scenario optimization in the system model has resulted in realistic engineering design requirements based on algal growth requirements and fluid dynamics analysis. Results show feasibility for …
A Mechanism Design Approach To Bandwidth Allocation In Tactical Data Networks, Ankur Mour
A Mechanism Design Approach To Bandwidth Allocation In Tactical Data Networks, Ankur Mour
Open Access Theses
The defense sector is undergoing a phase of rapid technological advancement, in the pursuit of its goal of information superiority. This goal depends on a large network of complex interconnected systems - sensors, weapons, soldiers - linked through a maze of heterogeneous networks. The sheer scale and size of these networks prompt behaviors that go beyond conglomerations of systems or `system-of-systems'. The lack of a central locus and disjointed, competing interests among large clusters of systems makes this characteristic of an Ultra Large Scale (ULS) system. These traits of ULS systems challenge and undermine the fundamental assumptions of today's software …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Improving distribution system reliability has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Because of the limitation in expected budgets, it is desirable to determine the most efficient strategy to improve system reliability. This paper proposes a novel method to determine the optimized operation and maintenance costs in order to decrease the failure of system components. The proposed objective function includes the average system frequency interruption index (ASIFI) value. To achieve the best strategy to decrease failures of system components, it is necessary to find the minimum value of the objective function, considering the constraints of operation and maintenance …
Environmental Implications Of Pavements: A Life Cycle View, Bin Yu
Environmental Implications Of Pavements: A Life Cycle View, Bin Yu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Environmental aspect of pavement, unlike its economic counterpart, is seldom considered in the theoretical study and field practices. As a highly energy and material intensive infrastructure, pavement has great potential to contribute to the environment protection, which, in root, depends on the in-depth understanding of the environmental impacts, holistically and specifically. A life cycle assessment (LCA) model is used to fulfill the goal.
This research firstly carried out extensive literature review of LCA studies on pavement to identify the major research gaps, including: incompleteness of the methodology, controversy of the functional unit, and unawareness of feedstock energy of asphalt, etc. …

Assessment, Optimization, And Enhancement Of Ultrafiltration (Uf) Membrane Processes In Potable Water Treatment, Christopher Boyd
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation reports on research related to ultrafiltration (UF) membranes in drinking water applications. A pilot-scale investigation identified seasonal surface water quality impacts on UF performance and resulted in the development of a dynamic chemically enhanced backwash protocol for fouling management. Subsequent analysis of UF process data revealed limitations with the use of specific flux, transmembrane pressure (TMP), and other normalization techniques for assessing UF process fouling. A new TMP balance approach is presented that identifies the pressure contribution of membrane fouling and structural changes, enables direct process performance comparisons at different operating fluxes, and distinguishes between physically and chemically …

Coordinated Control Of Power Electronic Converters In An Autonomous Microgrid, Gholamreza Dehnavi
Theses and Dissertations
Advances in power electronics and generation technologies have increased the viability of distributed generation systems. A microgrid is a special category of distributed generation systems that is distinguished by its size and the ability to operate independently as an islanded system. As long as a microgrid is connected to a large grid, quality of the voltage is supported by the main grid and each power source connected to the microgrid generates independently. In contrast, in the islanded operation of microgrids and in electrical islands such as shipboard distribution systems, dynamics are strongly dependent on the connected sources and on the …

Exact And Representative Algorithms For Multi Objective Optimization, Ozgu Turgut
Wayne State University Dissertations
In most real-life problems, the decision alternatives are evaluated with multiple conflicting criteria. The entire set of non-dominated solutions for practical problems is impossible to obtain with reasonable computational effort. Decision maker generally needs only a representative set of solutions from the actual Pareto front. First algorithm we present is for efficiently generating a well dispersed non-dominated solution set representative of the Pareto front which can be used for general multi objective optimization problem. The algorithm first partitions the criteria space into grids to generate reference points and then searches for non-dominated solutions in each grid. This grid-based search utilizes …
