Theory And Computation Of Photopolymerization Induced Phase Transition And Morphology Development In Blends Of Crystalline Polymer And Photoreactive Monomer, Thein Kyu Sep 2009

Theory And Computation Of Photopolymerization Induced Phase Transition And Morphology Development In Blends Of Crystalline Polymer And Photoreactive Monomer, Thein Kyu

Thein Kyu

A hypothetical phase diagram of a crystalline polymer/photoreactive monomer mixture has been calculated on the basis of phase field (PF) free energy of crystal solidification in conjunction with Flory-Huggins (FH) free energy of liquid-liquid demixing to guide the morphology development during photopolymerization of poly(ethylene oxide)/triacrylate blend. The self-consistent solution of the combined PF-FH theory exhibits a crystalline-amorphous phase diagram showing the coexistence of solid+liquid gap bound by the liquidus and solidus lines, followed by an upper critical solution temperature at a lower temperature. When photopolymerization was triggered in the isotropic region, i.e., slightly above the crystal melting transition temperatures, the …

A Service Choice Model For Optimizing Taxi Service Delivery, Shih-Fen Cheng, Xin Qu

Shih-Fen CHENG

Taxi service has undergone radical revamp in recent years. In particular, significant investments in communication system and GPS devices have improved quality of taxi services through better dispatches. In this paper, we propose to leverage on such infrastructure and build a service choice model that helps individual drivers in deciding whether to serve a specific taxi stand or not. We demonstrate the value of our model by applying it to a real-world scenario. We also highlight interesting new potential approaches that could significantly improve the quality of taxi services.

Effect Of External Energy On Atomic, Crystalline And Powder Characteristics Of Antimony And Bismuth Powders, Mahendra Kumar Trivedi, Vikram V. Dabhade, Rama Mohan Tallapragada Sep 2009

Effect Of External Energy On Atomic, Crystalline And Powder Characteristics Of Antimony And Bismuth Powders, Mahendra Kumar Trivedi, Vikram V. Dabhade, Rama Mohan Tallapragada

Mahendra Kumar Trivedi

Next to atoms and molecules the powders are the smallest state of matter available in high purities and large quantities. The effect of any external energy on the shape, morphology and structure can thus be studied with relative ease. The present investigation deals with the effect of a non-contact external energy on the powders of antimony and bismuth. The characteristics of powders treated by external energy are com-pared with the as received powders (control). The average particle sizes, d50 and d99, the sizes below which 99% of the particles are present showed significant increase and decrease indicating that the energy …

Utilization Of Virtual Globes For Open Source Industrial Symbiosis, William Doyle, Joshua M. Pearce Sep 2009

Utilization Of Virtual Globes For Open Source Industrial Symbiosis, William Doyle, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

Several proprietary industrial symbiosis software tools have been developed, however, without long term financial commitments these endeavors fall short of creating generalizable and sustainable tools. The recent development of virtual globes such as Google Earth (GE), an information service that provides imagery and three dimensional data depicting the entire physical earth, provides an opportunity to use a new sustainable method of navigating information to save energy and use materials more efficiently in the real world. To test this open source methodology, a data set was used from the Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania, which has mandated reporting the location …

User Security Behavior On Wireless Networks: An Empirical Study, Tim Chenoweth, Robert Minch, Sharon Tabor Sep 2009

User Security Behavior On Wireless Networks: An Empirical Study, Tim Chenoweth, Robert Minch, Sharon Tabor

Robert P. Minch

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming ubiquitous but are often insecure and leave users responsible for their own security. We empirically study whether users are successfully securing their client computers when using wireless networks. Automated techniques are used that scan users' machines after they associate with a university wireless network. This determines whether a firewall is being used and what TCP ports are open. Results show that over 9% of 3,331 unique computers scanned were not using a properly configured firewall. In addition, almost 9% had at least one TCP port open, with almost 6% having open ports with significant security …

An Exploratory Study Of Hypermedia Support For Problem Decomposition, Robert P. Minch, Gary I. Green Sep 2009

An Exploratory Study Of Hypermedia Support For Problem Decomposition, Robert P. Minch, Gary I. Green

Robert P. Minch

Empirical hypermedia research has concentrated on usability rather than utility, and the research on utility has focused on information access as opposed to problem solving and decision making in organizations. This study, based on problem reduction theory, uses a hypermedia prototype system to support decision processes for solving a financial analysis problem. An exploratory laboratory experiment was conducted to study the feasibility of the prototype for hypermedia support of decision making. The process tracing techniques used suggest that a cognitive map of a decision maker's thought process may be constructed. Results offer a great deal of promise in the use …

Mitigation Of Control Channel Jamming Under Node Capture Attacks, Patrick Tague, Mingyan Li, Radha Poovendran Aug 2009

Mitigation Of Control Channel Jamming Under Node Capture Attacks, Patrick Tague, Mingyan Li, Radha Poovendran

Patrick Tague

Availability of service in many wireless networks depends on the ability for network users to establish and maintain communication channels using control messages from base stations and other users. An adversary with knowledge of the underlying communication protocol can mount an efficient denial of service attack by jamming the communication channels used to exchange control messages. The use of spread spectrum techniques can deter an external adversary from such control channel jamming attacks. However, malicious colluding insiders or an adversary who captures or compromises system users are not deterred by spread spectrum, as they know the required spreading sequences. For …

Simulation Of Mc-Ds-Cdma-System Based On: Multi-Wavelets Transform Over Wireless Channel, Amean Al_Safi

Amean S Al_Safi

In this paper a scheme was proposed to improve the performance form the Bit Error Rate (BER) view point for Multicarrier-Direct-Sequence-Code Division Multiple Access (MC-DS-CDMA) system in wireless channel. The conventional MC-DS-CDMA-system is based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The proposed system was based on Multi-Wavelet transform (MWT). Simulation results are done in three different types of channels. Simulation shows that the proposed system outperforms the conventional system in addition to a coded version of the conventional system. Also the MC-DS-CDMA-system which is based on MWT achieves better performance with the same loss in bandwidth than the MC-DS-CDMA-system based on …

On The Issue Of Decoupled Decoding Of Codes Derived From Quaternion Orthogonal Designs, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki, Sarah Spence Adams Aug 2009

On The Issue Of Decoupled Decoding Of Codes Derived From Quaternion Orthogonal Designs, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata Wysocki, Sarah Spence Adams

Sarah Spence Adams

Quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) have been previously introduced as a basis for orthogonal space-time polarization block codes (OSTPBCs). This note will serve to correct statements concerning the optimality of a decoupled maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding algorithm. It will be shown that when compared to coupled decoding, the decoupled decoding is only optimal in certain cases. This raises several open problems concerning the decoding of OSTPBCs.

Mass-Market Designed-For-Cellular Mmics Can Be Gainfully Adapted For Use In Niche Applications On Different Frequencies, Chin-Leong Lim Aug 2009

Mass-Market Designed-For-Cellular Mmics Can Be Gainfully Adapted For Use In Niche Applications On Different Frequencies, Chin-Leong Lim

Chin-Leong Lim

Due to semiconductor manufacturers’ near exclusive focus on high growth markets such as cellular and wireless data, very little commercial RND resource is expended on developing Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuits (MMIC) for the lower-volume traditional wireless services such as aviation and land mobile, etc. To circumvent the dearth of MMICs in those under-served market segments, we intend to show how off-the-shelf cellular MMICs can be leveraged into non-cellular applications. For this purpose, a MMIC originally conceived as a 900 MHz 0.5W driver amplifier is redeployed to two dissimilar applications: (i) a high linearity Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) for the 400~520 …

Power Handling And Related Frequency Scaling Advantages In Piezoelectric Aln Contour-Mode Mems Resonators, Chengjie Zuo, Matteo Rinaldi, Gianluca Piazza Aug 2009

Power Handling And Related Frequency Scaling Advantages In Piezoelectric Aln Contour-Mode Mems Resonators, Chengjie Zuo, Matteo Rinaldi, Gianluca Piazza

Matteo Rinaldi

This paper reports on the analytical modeling and experimental verification of the mechanically-limited power handling and nonlinearity in piezoelectric aluminum nitride (AlN) contour-mode resonators (CMR) having different electrode configurations (thickness field excitation, lateral field excitation, one-port and two-port configurations) and operating at different frequencies (177-3047 MHz). Despite its simplicity, the one-dimensional analytical model fits the experimental behavior of AlN CMRs in terms of power handling capabilities. The model and experiment also confirm the advantage of scaling (i.e. miniaturizing) the AlN CMRs to higher frequencies at which higher critical power density can be more easily attained up to values in excess …

Dr.-Ing. Nasser Hemdan

Abstract— In developing countries, where the utilities already facing the problem of high power losses and poor voltage profiles because of high loads, DG can be the key answer to solve these questions while expansion and reinforcement of these systems to meet the increasing load demand are faced by economical and environmental difficulties. An evaluation of some technical benefits of integration of DG into MV distribution networks are presented in this paper. An efficient methodology for integration of DG units for meeting the increased load demand is also introduced. Kurzfassung— In Entwicklungsländern, wo die Netzbetreibern, die bereits dem Problem von …

Rna Search With Decision Trees And Partial Covariance Models, Jennifer A. Smith Aug 2009

Rna Search With Decision Trees And Partial Covariance Models, Jennifer A. Smith

Jennifer A. Smith

The use of partial covariance models to search for RNA family members in genomic sequence databases is explored. The partial models are formed from contiguous subranges of the overall RNA family multiple alignment columns. A binary decision-tree framework is presented for choosing the order to apply the partial models and the score thresholds on which to make the decisions. The decision trees are chosen to minimize computation time subject to the constraint that all of the training sequences are passed to the full covariance model for final evaluation. Computational intelligence methods are suggested to select the decision tree since the …

Piezoelectric Aluminum Nitride Nanoelectromechanical Actuators, Nipun Sinha, Graham Wabiszewski, Rashed Mahameed, Valery Felmetsger, Shawn Tanner, Robert Carpick, Gianluca Piazza

Nipun Sinha

This letter reports the implementation of ultrathin (100 nm) aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric layers for the fabrication of vertically deflecting nanoactuators. The films exhibit an average piezoelectric coefficient (d31~−1.9 pC/N), which is comparable to its microscale counterpart. This allows vertical deflections as large as 40 nm from 18 µm long and 350 nm thick multilayer cantilever bimorph beams with 2 V actuation. Furthermore, in-plane stress and stress gradients have been simultaneously controlled. The films exhibit leakage currents lower than 2 nA/cm2 at 1 V, and have an average relative dielectric constant of approximately 9.2 (as in thicker films). These material …

Quantifying Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Potential For Regional Renewable Energy Policy, L. K. Winginton, H. T. Nguyen, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has matured to become a technically viable large-scale source of sustainable energy. Understanding the rooftop PV potential is critical for utility planning, accommodating grid capacity, deploying financing schemes and formulating future adaptive energy policies. This paper demonstrates techniques to merge the capabilities of geographic information systems and object-specific image recognition to determine the available rooftop area for PV deployment in an example large-scale region in south eastern Ontario. A five-step procedure has been developed for estimating total rooftop PV potential which involves geographical division of the region; sampling using the Feature Analyst extraction software; extrapolation using …

Expanding Photovoltaic Penetration With Residential Distributed Generation From Hybrid Solar Photovoltaic Combined Heat And Power Systems, Joshua M. Pearce Jul 2009

Expanding Photovoltaic Penetration With Residential Distributed Generation From Hybrid Solar Photovoltaic Combined Heat And Power Systems, Joshua M. Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

The recent development of small scale combined heat and power (CHP) systems has provided the opportunity for in-house power backup of residential-scale photovoltaic (PV) arrays. This paper investigates the potential of deploying a distributed network of PV + CHP hybrid systems in order to increase the PV penetration level in the U.S. The temporal distribution of solar flux, electrical and heating requirements for representative U.S. single family residences were analyzed and the results clearly show that hybridizing CHP with PV can enable additional PV deployment above what is possible with a conventional centralized electric generation system. The technical evolution of …
