In satellite analysis, it is often necessary to determine the attitude of a satellite from a two dimensional image of the satellite. This thesis describes work performed to determine the attitude of a satellite relative to a reference position. The attitude is described in terms of the scaling, rotation and translation of the reference that will result in a pose that can be projected to form the image of interest. The techniques used are based on finding coefficients for the linear combination of basis images and decomposition of a composite transformation matrix. Current plans for constructing large structures in space entail fabricating the primary components, such as truss segments, on the ground and assembling them in space. This process requires an exorbitant number of support missions, and methods to minimize the number must be considered. Whenever the space shuttle is launched, its external tank is jettisoned and destroyed prior to reaching orbit. This aerospace grade aluminum structure can be carried into orbit and utilized extrusively. The Prototype Space Fabrication Platform SFP fabricates aluminum materials, reduced from external tanks, into functional trusses. The trusses are strong and can be used as the primary …

This research determines the performance requirements of a combined optical LADAR space-based system in order to detect and track deep-space satellites from a near-earth orbit satellite. The research derives the necessary equations to compare both direct and heterodyne detection techniques. The selection of the candidate laser systems is based on current space developed LADAR technology. The selection of the detector, detector size, and optic size are determined in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio. This study investigated Shielded Coil Electrodynamic Propulsion SCEP. The use of the earths magnetic field as a propulsion source has been previously investigated. It was found that a significant amount of power and long conductors were required. A more compact propulsion concept which requires significantly less power is proposed. This concept relies on the feasibility of significantly reducing the magnetic force induced by the earths magnetic field on selected segments of a coil. An experiment design to support the theoretical findings was conducted. The experiment results support the theoretical model.

The Air Force has a requirement to quantify the force enhancement effects of military space systems, but no methodology currently exists for the measurement of their contribution to air combat outcome. This research examines the Global Positioning System GPS and models its influence on air-to-ground combat. The decision analysis technique of influence diagrams is used to identify the effects of GPS launch decisions and constellation size on the navigation accuracy available to air combatants. Aspirating, concentration probes are used to measure binary gas concentrations in a supersonic flow. In the past, a tank discharge method has been used to calibrate concentration probes. An alternate calibration method has been developed and tested on a probe in a steady, subsonic/sonic flow. This study evaluated the calibration and performance of a concentration probe in a steady, supersonic flow over a range of mixture ratios of air and helium. The results of this study and a comparison of the two calibration methods are presented.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the differences between a one-degree-of-freedom (1-DOF) controller, in which a controller is placed in a single location in the control loop, and a two-degree- of-freedom (2-DOF) controller, in which two separate controllers are designed -- one in the feedback loop and the other as a prefilter in the forward loop. Dynamic Response Of A Compressor Research Facility, Janet W. Grondin

The response of the Wright Laboratory Compressor Research Facility to a small amplitude, acoustic, sinusoidal disturbance was investigated. The fluid transmission line equations for laminar, one-dimensional flow in a circular duct were solved and verified through a laboratory experiment using a scale model of the facility. The resonant frequencies of the facility were determined for a variety of flow conditions. Techniques for analytically modeling end impedance and flow straightening elements were also studied. The fundamental frequency of the facility was determined to be between 5.5 and 6.5 Hz depending on the flow conditions and geometry configurations specified.

This thesis describes the application of the multiple-input multiple- output (MIMO) Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) design technique to the design of a digital flight control system for the Lambda Unmanned Research Vehicle (URV). The QFT technique allows the synthesis of a control system which is robust in the presence of structured plant uncertainties. Uncertainties considered in this design are the aircraft's plant variation within the flight envelope and the effects of damage to aircraft control surfaces. Mathematical models of control surface failure effects on aircraft dynamics are derived and used to modify an existing small perturbation model of the Lambda. …

The mission of Space Operations Squadrons is continuous support of military satellite systems. The scheduling problem associated with conducting continuous operations is threefold. The first problem is finding cyclical crew shift schedules that meet daily manning requirements, adhere to current regulations, contain a minimum number of workshift changes during consecutive duty days, and maximize the non-duty time allowed between duty shifts. The second problem is to establish a sea of criteria to evaluate alternative shift schedules. Hoph Bifurcation In Viscous, Low Speed Flows About An Airfoil With Structural Coupling, Mark J. Lutton

The locations of Hopf bifurcation points associated with the viscous, incompressible flow about a NACA 0012 airfoil with structural coupling are computed for very low Reynolds numbers (<2000). A semi-implicit, first-order-accurate time integration algorithm is employed to solve the stream function-vorticity form of the Navier-Stokes equations. The formulation models the inclusion of simple structural elements affixed to the airfoil and captures the resulting airfoil motion. The equations describing the airfoil motion are integrated in time using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithm. The dissertation is divided into two parts. In part one, numerical experiments are performed in the laminar regime to determine if the structural model of the airfoil has an effect upon the location of the Hopf bifurcation point when compared with the fixed airfoil. Results are reported for a variety of structural characteristics, including variations of torsional and linear spring constants, inertial properties, structural coupling, and structural damping. The structure of the solution space is explored by means of phase plots. In part two, the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is implemented to model turbulent flow. A numerical effort is made to predict the onset of unsteady flow.

Using affine transformations and suitably recasting the buckling vibration differential equations, the eigenvalue problem of anti-symmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated rectangular plates has been reduced to a function of two strong material constants, the generalized rigidity ratio, whose range is in the closed interval from 0 to 1, and the ratio of principal lamina stiffness. With the reduction in number of constants an exhaustive parameter study of buckling and vibration solution trends, is possible. The buckling coefficients decrease with decreasing value of generalized rigidity ratio for both antisymmetric cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminates. For a given aspect ratio, and …

Optimal linear smoothing theory is applied to the data from the Speed of Sound record attempt of a three-wheeled rocket car on 17 December 1979. A forward-backward estimation method is used which employs a seven state forward-running extended Kalman filter and a Meditch-form backward recursive 'fixed-interval' smoothing algorithm. Data for this analysis is supplied by a longitudinal accelerometer mounted on the vehicle and tracking radar measurements of range, azimuth, and elevation. States of interest include two components of vehicle position and velocity, accelerometer time-correlated error, and radar range and azimuth bias errors. The application of pneumatic transmission lines theory to a tube-scanning valve system for unsteady pressure measurements in the AFIT 5-foot wind tunnel is investigated. Transfer gains of various tube-scanning valve configurations were experimentally measured and the validity of a theoretical model verified for a frequency range of 20 Hz to 140 Hz. The selected system having a 0.0625-in. ID flexible tube of 84 in. length connected to a scanning valve was installed in the wind tunnel.
