INTRODUCTION Cold-formed steel structures are being widely used in various forms of construction such as industrial plants, gymnasiums, hangars and metal buildings. One important feature of metal building construction is the use of light gage roof panels connected to purlins, particularly of the Z-section. This section is, besides the channel-section, the simplest two-flange section which can be produced by cold-forming. The purlins have span lengths of 20 to 25 feet, generally made continuous over the building rigid frames by nesting. Construction details vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The purlins available would typically have prepunched holes for connection of various types …

One of the purposes of the Council is to maintain a forum where structural stability aspects of the behavior of frames, columns and other compression-type elements in metal and compression structures can be presented for evaluation and discussion. The Annual Technical Session provides an opportunity to carry out this function. Summaries of the technical papers, the panel discussion and minutes of the business meeting are recorded in the following pages. The attendance list is also included.

A two-span test structure, with tie-rods to similate approach-slab forces, was subjected to thermal loading. The resultant strains and deflections are correlated with those obtained from a prior theoretical study. It was concluded ~hat the theoretical procedure provides a rational method for predicting the thermal behavior of composite-girder bridge structures.

In 1974, the Constructional Steel Research and Development Organization (CONSTRADO) of England commissioned Ove Amp & Partners to prepare a detailed technical report setting out the most plausible models of flame projection from openings in building facades and the methods of calculating heat transfer from fires to exterior exposed steel columns. The report and an accompanying calculation method were completed in November 1975. In July 1975, the Subcommittee on Fire Teclmology of the Committee on Construction Codes and Standards of American Iron and Steel Institute commissioned a revised major extension of Ove Amp's work, and a two-volume report was completed …

A survey of the variation to be expected in Charpy V-Notch tests obtained from plates was conducted by the Committee on Product Standards at the request of the Committee on General Metallurgy. The results of the survey are presented in this report.
The survey data consisted of longitudinal and transverse impact test values obtained from seven specified locations on plates produced to ASTM A-572 as-rolled, A-516 normalized and A-537 quenched and tempered. Three testing temperatures were used for each grade.
The data were collected from industry production during 1973 and 1974. Sufficient data were received to estimate limits of variation …

INTRODUCTION This report presents the progress made on the development of the load and resistance factor design of cold-formed steel following the preparation of the First Progress Report. In Article 11.1, the statistical analyses of the tested values versus the specified values on mechanical properties and thicknesses of the steel sheets and strip are discussed. More than 4,000 tensile coupon tests on mechanical properties and 1,400 data on thickness of steel sheets have been collected and analyzed. INTRODUCTION In the design of steel buildings, the "Allowable Stress Criteria" have long been used for the design of cold-formed steel structural members in the United States (1), Canada (2) and other countries (3). Even though the theoretical concepts of risk and reliability analyses have been available for some time (8-10) and the slgnlflcance of such concepts in structural safety and design is well recognized, the probabilistic method has not been explicitly adopted as a basis for the American design standard for steel structures. One of the purposes of the Council is to maintain a forum where problems related to the design and behavior of columns and other compression elements in metal structures can be presented for evaluation and discussion. The Annual Technical Session provides an opportunity to carry out this function. The 1979 Annual Technical Session was held on April 24 and 25 at The William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since 1973, a research project on webs for cold-formed steel flexural members has been conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla under the sponsorship of American Iron and Steel Institute.
