Passive And Semi-Active Structure-Multiple Tuned Liquid Damper Systems, Islam Soliman
Passive And Semi-Active Structure-Multiple Tuned Liquid Damper Systems, Islam Soliman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The resonant vibration motion of tall buildings due to dynamic loading, such as wind storms and earthquakes, can be reduced by adding passive dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs). A single sway mode of vibration is usually considered, however, for certain structures, multiple modes may need to be suppressed. Furthermore, the location of the TLD on the floor plate is important for certain modes, such as the torsional mode. As a result, a three dimensional finite element structure-TLD system model capable of dynamically analyzing a 3D structure is developed and validated. Two different nonlinear TLD models are considered. A full dynamic analysis …
Dynamic Vulnerability Assessment Of Highway And Railway Bridges, Mehdi Mohseni
Dynamic Vulnerability Assessment Of Highway And Railway Bridges, Mehdi Mohseni
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Dynamic loads can cause severe damage to bridges, and lead to malfunction of transportation networks. A comprehensive understanding of the nature of the dynamic loads and the structural response of bridges can prevent undesired failures while keeping the cost-safety balance. Dissimilar to the static behavior, the dynamic response of bridges depends on several structural parameters such as material properties, damping and mode shapes. Furthermore, dynamic load characteristics can significantly change the structural response. In most cases, complexity and involvement of numerous parameters require the designer to investigate the bridge response via a massive numerical study.
This dissertation targets three main …
Stiffness-Driven Design And Interface Debonding Study Of Frp Sandwich Structures For Bridges, Wenchao Song
Stiffness-Driven Design And Interface Debonding Study Of Frp Sandwich Structures For Bridges, Wenchao Song
Doctoral Dissertations
Bridge decks entirely made of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials are a potential solution to fast construction in bridge engineering. This study mainly focuses on the stiffness-driven design of FRP decks for short-span slab bridges and the interface debonding of an FRP sandwich structure with honeycomb cores. As is evidenced by the analytical and experimental results in this study, these two topics are closely related to the application of FRP materials in bridge deck construction. The design verification of an FRP slab bridge showed that its design should be controlled by stiffness rather than strength. The tests of the FRP …
Investigation Of Out-Of-Plane Properties Of Interlocking Compressed Earth Block Walls, Nicholas Anthony Herskedal
Investigation Of Out-Of-Plane Properties Of Interlocking Compressed Earth Block Walls, Nicholas Anthony Herskedal
Master's Theses
Interlocking compressed earth blocks (ICEBs) are cement stabilized soil blocks that allow for dry stacked construction. The incomplete understanding of the inelastic performance of ICEB building systems limits widespread acceptance of this structural system in earthquake prone areas. This thesis presents results from an experimental program designed to explore the behavior of ICEB walls, built according to current design practice in Indonesia and Thailand, and subjected to out-of-plane loading. A total of five reinforced and grouted ICEB walls were constructed and tested.
Results from experimentation show the current masonry design code, ACI 530, adequately predicts the yield strength of these …
Development Of Mems-Based Corrosion Sensor, Feng Pan
Development Of Mems-Based Corrosion Sensor, Feng Pan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research is to develop a MEMS-based corrosion sensor, which is used for monitoring uniform, galvanic corrosion occurring in infrastructures such as buildings, bridges. The corrosion sensor is made up of the composite of micro/nano metal particles with elastomers. The mechanism of corrosion sensor is based on the mass transport of corrosive species through the sensor matrix. When the metal particles in the matrix corrode, the electrical resistivity of the material increases due to increasing particle resistances or reduction of conducting pathways. The corrosion rate can be monitored by detecting the resistivity change in sensing elements. The life span of …

Implementation And Validation Of Fault-Rupture Response Spectrum Analysis Procedure In Csibridge For Bridges Crossing Earthquake Fault Ruptures, Jennifer Evelyn Tures
Master's Theses
This thesis evaluates the application of a simplified analysis procedure as implemented in version 16 of CSiBridgeTM for design of bridges crossing earthquake fault ruptures. The fault-rupture response spectrum analysis (FR-RSA) approximation method has been proved adequate for both straight and curved ordinary bridges, but lacked a comfortable interface to accommodate the method users. Computers and Structure, Inc. has implemented the FR-RSA procedure into CSiBridgeTM, a user-friendly integrated 3-D bridge design software, as an added seismic design feature. By combining the response of the bridge due to the quasi-static displacement from the fault strike-slip rupture and the …
The Effect Of Mortar Strength On The Standard Test For Strand Bond, Cameron Murray
The Effect Of Mortar Strength On The Standard Test For Strand Bond, Cameron Murray
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The prestressed industry is moving towards adopting the Standard Test for Strand Bond (STSB) to quantify the bond capacity of prestressing strand. In the test, strand is pulled through an 18 in. cylindrical casing filled with mortar. The force corresponding to the dead end displacement of 0.1 in. is recorded and this value is used to quantify strand bond. One of the concerns of the test is the requirement of a mean mortar strength of 4,500 to 5,000 psi during testing. There is concern that this 500 psi range may be too difficult to achieve. A study was conducted to …
Seismic Performance Of Symmetric Steel Moment Frames With Random Reactive Weight Distributions, Conner F.F. Williamson
Seismic Performance Of Symmetric Steel Moment Frames With Random Reactive Weight Distributions, Conner F.F. Williamson
Master's Theses
When a structure undergoes seismic excitation, the intensities and spatial distributions of the reactive weights on the structure may not be the same as those assumed in original design. Such a difference is inevitable due to many facts with the random nature (e.g., redistribution of live load), resulting in accidental eccentricity and consequently torsional response in the system. The added torsion can cause excessive deformation and premature failure of the lateral force resisting system and its detrimental effect is typically accounted for in most building design codes with an arbitrarily specified accidental eccentricity value. While it tends to amplify drift …

Pullout Strength Of Epoxy Anchors Installed Underwater, Jeffrey Lee Blanchette
Master's Theses
This work presents the development of a test program and the results from the final round of testing to better understand the effect a submerged anchor installation has on the pullout strength of epoxy anchors. Two different epoxies were tested at embedment depths of two, four, and six bar diameters. These tests utilized three distinct installation procedures under dry and submerged conditions. The testing program occurred over five phases, with the final round used in analysis consisting of 24 anchor pullout tests. These tests showed that the presence of water did not have an effect on the epoxy bond when …

Knowledge Dictionary For Information Extraction On The Arabic Text Data, Wahyu Syaifullah Jauharis Saputra, Agus Zainal Arifin, Anny Yuniarti
Makara Journal of Technology
Information extraction is an early stage of a process of textual data analysis. Information extraction is required to get information from textual data that can be used for process analysis, such as classification and categorization. A textual data is strongly influenced by the language. Arabic is gaining a significant attention in many studies because Arabic language is very different from others, and in contrast to other languages, tools and research on the Arabic language is still lacking. The information extracted using the knowledge dictionary is a concept of expression. A knowledge dictionary is usually constructed manually by an expert and …

Indium tin oxide (ITO) films were sputtered on corning glass substrate. Oxygen admixture and sputtering deposition parameters were optimized to obtain the highest transparency as well as lowest resistivity. Structural, electrical and optical properties of the films were then examined. Increasing deposition rate and film thickness changed the crystallographic orientation from (222) to (400) and (440), as well as higher surface roughness. It was necessary to apply substrate heating during reposition to get films with better crystallinity. The lowest resistivity of 5.36 x 10-4 Ω•cm was obtained at 750 nm film thickness. The films’ resistivity was increased by addition of …

Marian Sabau
This paper study the bond behaviour of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in comparison to normal vibrated concrete (NVC). In this paper are presented the following parameters: the influence of bar diameter, the influence of concrete quality, the top-bar effect, the influence of active and passive confinement. In literature, different test results are found for the bond strength in SCC, which deliver contradictory results, but internationally it seems to be agreed that bond strength in SCC is slightly higher than NVC.

This paper presents the properties of hardened self-compacting concrete (SCC) and compare them to those reported for normally vibrated concrete (NVC). The mechanical properties evaluated are: compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, creep, shrinkage and bond with reinforcement. The very wide range of materials and mixes already used for SCC produced a significant scatter of data, but clear conclusions have been obtained. The compressive strength of SCC was likely to be the same or greater than that of NVC by using the same content of cement and water. Modulus of elasticity of SCC was lower than that of NVC …
Comparison Between Three Types Of Cable Stayed Bridges Using Structural Optimization, Olfat Sarhang Zadeh
Comparison Between Three Types Of Cable Stayed Bridges Using Structural Optimization, Olfat Sarhang Zadeh
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Cable stayed bridges have good stability, optimum use of structural materials, aesthetic, relatively low design and maintenance costs, and efficient structural characteristics. Therefore, this type of bridges are becoming more and more popular and are usually preferred for long span crossings compared to suspension bridges. A cable-stayed bridge consists of one or more towers with cables supporting the bridge deck. In terms of cable arrangements, the most common type of cable stayed bridges are fan, harp, and semi fan bridges. Because of their large size and nonlinear structural behaviour, the analysis of these types of bridges is more complicated than …

Load-Sharing Of Toe-Nailed, Roof-To-Wall Connections Under Extreme Wind Loads In Wood-Frame Houses, Mohammad Khan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A typical wood frame house roof consists of trusses which are nailed to the top-plates of the wall assembly. These are known as roof-to-wall connections (RTWCs). A load-sharing mechanism is developed between adjacent RTWCs via roof elements such as roof-sheathing, fascia beams, etc., during high wind loads. An experimental setup was developed to observe the load-sharing behavior between seven connections. To mimic the roof bending stiffness in the direction perpendicular to the trusses, two steel beams with representative bending stiffness were connected across the RTWCs in a simple way. Identical ramp and identical fluctuating wind loads were applied to all …

Probabilistic Analysis Of Indeterminate Highway Bridges Considering Material Nonlinearity, Liam Mccarthy
Probabilistic Analysis Of Indeterminate Highway Bridges Considering Material Nonlinearity, Liam Mccarthy
Masters
With ever-reducing maintenance budgets and ever-deteriorating bridge infrastructure, th assessment of existing bridges is vital. Reliability analysis techniques are becomin increasingly popular in the structural safety assessment of existing bridge structures Commonly, a component based approach is used in reliability analysis techniques Traditional reliability procedures often employ a conservative definition of failure, in that th component is deemed to have failed when the strength capacity has been exceeded at a singl cross section. As a result, the component's degree of redundancy and ductility is ignored giving an often conservative estimate of the load carrying capacity of the bridge component Therefore, …
