An Analysis Of Substance Abusers' Field Dependence & Time Spent In Rehabilitative Therapy, Robert Fane
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This project was designed to determine if significant differences existed between the level of psychological differentiation, as determined by the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), of individuals entering a treatment center for chemical dependency and the length of stay at the facility.
The subjects consisted of 43 white males who were seeking treatment for addiction to mood altering chemicals at a regional treatment facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Each subject was interviewed to collect pertinent background information pertaining to past substance abuse and was evaluated to determine psychological differentiation, utilizing the GEFT.

Occupational Stress Among Nurse Administrators In General Hospitals In Tennessee, Ruby T. Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the level of occupational stress among nurse administrators and to identify the types of strategies used by nurse administrators to deal with or manage occupational stress. The study examined the relationship between selected demographic variables, occupational stress, and strategies. The research design included five research questions along with seven null hypotheses testing the relationship between occupational stress and demographic variables--age, gender, marital status, years of professional nursing experience, years as a nurse administrator, educational attainment, and hospital bed capacity. There were seven additional hypotheses testing the relationship between the same demographic variables …
Racial Issues In White Dyads: An Investigation Of Helms's Interaction Model, Nancy G. Ochs
Racial Issues In White Dyads: An Investigation Of Helms's Interaction Model, Nancy G. Ochs
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Experienced counselors in three eastern states were surveyed about the incidence of racial issues presented by their White clients and were asked to complete the White Racial Identity Attitudes Scales (WRIAS) and to respond to a questionnaire about a White client presenting a racial issue. Nearly a quarter of the counselors responding to the survey reported having some clients raising racial issues as main issues in counseling, and 45% reported having some clients bringing up racial issues relevant to their counseling. Respondents generally did not have training to help White clients with racial issues, nor did many report having special …

The author also hoped to demonstrate the feasibility of the utilization of a personal computer as a tachistoscope for the purpose of presenting subliminal death stimuli; evaluate the use of heart rate change as a physiological measure and the State scale of the STAI as the affective measure of the momentary response to the death stimuli, with the Templer Death Anxiety Scale as the trait measure.;The subjects of the study were …
Interactional Characteristics Of Facial Pain Patients And Their Spouses: Assessment Of Self-Report And Behavioral Observation Measures Of Cohesion, Adaptability, And Marital Satisfaction, Pamela Guyler Boll
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Twenty-four facial pain patients and their spouses were videotaped answering questions concerning their relationships. This study was designed to more objectively support the clinical impressions of the MCV/VCU TMJ and Facial Pain Research Center's treatment team's view of the interactional characteristics of these couples. Prior to the team offering brief couples psychotherapy for assistance in the resolution of the pain problem, the team needed to assess the pain couples' relationship variables. Adherence to health care providers' recommendations is typically minimal unless all participants agree that specific treatment is warranted. There appears to be a lack of understanding among patients, their …

Behavioral Disorders: A Nutritional Checklist For The Educational Practitioner, Ronald F. Bobner, Louisa M. Marchionda, Carolyn Ridenour, Isadore Newman, Mary J. Beaubien
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Millions of dollars are spent annually on special educational programs for children whose severe behavior disorders prevent them from participating in the regular school setting despite average or above average intellectual capacity. A growing body of research indicates that some of these behavior disorders are related to nutritional problems. (Pfeiffer and Iliev 1972; Kittler 1973; Mayron 1979; and Buckley 1977), and many clinicians support the view that no matter what the etiology of behavioral disorders, nutritional programs can improve the baseline data on medical, social and intellectual achievement, and on personality measures (Palmer 1978). Our purpose here is to present …

Exploring Collaboration: A Program Evaluation Of A Mental Health Intervention In A Public Elementary School, Joy Rhodes
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this evaluative study was to develop and implement a program evaluation design for a model of early mental health intervention to primary grade level classrooms in a public elementary school. The design reflects a formative evaluation study, providing information for current and future programming and is manageable to implement, thus facilitating longitudinal data collection.
This therapeutic model of classroom intervention stresses the integration of children’s social, emotional and intellectual development and proposes a collaborative approach between therapist and educator. Levels of intervention for collaborators include (1) children identified as requiring therapeutic approaches to social-emotional difficulties experienced in …

The Effect Of Self-Directed Structure Versus Adult-Directed Structure In The Learning Of Articulation Skills In First And Second Grade Boys And Girls, Doris Elaine Haley
All Master's Theses
The comparative effectiveness of two speech correction approaches was studied in the therapeutic situation (within the program and the setting of the public school). The Van Riper adult-directed auditory stimulation method, used by many speech therapists today, was compared with a self-directed and modified Backus and Beasley approach to sound correction. The problem resolved was: Which method will be most effective in helping first and second grade children acquire adequate articulation skills?
