This article is based on the author’s experiences after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City and the impact of the attacks on her life as a New Yorker, an academic, and a member of a Sikh family and community. To position the author’s narrative, her reflection integrates race-based traumatic stress (Carter, 2007), a model suggesting that individuals who are targets of racism experience harm or injury. Objective: We examined the association between pre-teen alcohol use initiation and the victimization and perpetration of bullying among middle and high school students in Georgia.

Methods: We computed analyses using data from the 2006 Georgia Student Health Survey (N=175,311) of students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The current analyses were limited to students in grades 8, 10 and 12 (n=122,434). We used multilogistic regression analyses to determine the associations between early alcohol use and reports of both victimization and perpetration of bullying, perpetration only, victimization only, and neither victimization or perpetration, while controlling for demographic characteristics, other substance …

Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a brief intervention for mandated students in the context of the University Assistance Program, a Student Assistance Program developed and modeled after workplace Employee Assistance Programs. Method:Participants were 265 (196 males and 69 females) judicially mandated college students enrolled in a large, urban university in the northeast United States. All participants were sanctioned by the university's judicial office for an alcohol- or drug-related violation. Therefore the need for the health promotion profession to orient itself in terms of social justice and not simply biomedical diagnostics is critical. This session will weave together a personal narrative of transitional journeys with original research about ACHA’s organizational evolution and cross-disciplinary theories and institutionally relevant practices to highlight the challenge of public health in this modern leadership context.

When Disaster Strikes: A Proposed Model For Child Life Programming In Disaster Relief Settings, Caralyn Perlee

In the aftermath of a major natural disaster, few are equipped to respond effectively to the unique emotional and psychological needs to children. Child life specialists are specifically trained to help children effectively cope with traumatic situations, though very few child life specialists have engaged in disaster-related work. There exists the need for a medium through which child life specialists can become involved and offer their crucial and unique services. This project offers a rationale for why this medium is necessary and proposes a model for the integration of child life into the pre-existing Red Cross disaster relief model.
