Parental Attitudes On Sign Language Systems Used With Children With Hearing Impairments, Debra Marie Williams
Parental Attitudes On Sign Language Systems Used With Children With Hearing Impairments, Debra Marie Williams
Masters Theses
In the field of educating children with hearing impairments there has been a continuous debate over which is the most beneficial method of communication to use both in the classroom and in the home environment. The current debate concerns two main methods of communication through sign language, American Sign Language and Manually Coded English. The importance of the family in the decision over which sign language system to use in the child's environment has been documented throughout the research in this field. This study was designed to examine the attitudes of parents with no hearing loss who have children with …
An Evaluation Of Special Education And Remedial Services Within South Wisconsin District - Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Elementary Schools, Jennifer S. Pflueger
An Evaluation Of Special Education And Remedial Services Within South Wisconsin District - Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Elementary Schools, Jennifer S. Pflueger
Masters Theses
The availability of special education and remedial services within the South Wisconsin District-Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod elementary schools was investigated. A teacher and the principal from fifty-three schools were surveyed. The schools represented urban, suburban, and rural areas. Thirty-eight principals and thirty-seven teachers responded to the questionnaire. The principal questionnaire consisted of fifteen fill-in-the-blank questions and addressed information regarding remedial and exceptional education programs. The teacher questionnaire was a thirteen item rating format addressing the teacher's perceptions of his/her skills in remediation and exceptional education. The results indicated that a higher percentage of students received remedial services than exceptional education services. …

Theory And Practice On Preparing Human Resource Development Professionals, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
Theory and practice in college and university academic programs preparing Human Resource Development (HRD) Professional Practitioners have seldom been addressed in the same places or times. This paper clarifies the terms, theory, practice, academic program, learning, learning organization; traces some history of the issues; provides a case illustration of how an HRD professional prepared in a program advocating a supportive connection between theory and practice, modeled that in his own professional career and developed support within the university setting.
Developing A Mentoring Program Improvement Evaluation Model, John A. Henschke Edd
Developing A Mentoring Program Improvement Evaluation Model, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
Formal adult teacher model mentoring programs tend to have a predictable set of elements: policies, mentor selection procedures, mentor training activities, mentor role expectations, mentor-adult teacher matching, and secondary development relationships. Mentoring is an individualized, long-term, teaching/learning relationship between two people used to accomplish a variety of purposes. Yet, little evaluation has been conducted to determine its results, or the effectiveness of the current process, with an eye to making program improvements. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to: develop a program improvement model for an adult teacher mentoring program; apply the model to a formal adult teacher …
Problem Solving Of Children With Intellectual Disabilities: Interrogative Strategies And Solution Time Rates, Sonya Barrett
Problem Solving Of Children With Intellectual Disabilities: Interrogative Strategies And Solution Time Rates, Sonya Barrett
Theses : Honours
Possible differences in problem solving abilities between children with intellectual disabilities and regular class children were studied. A comparison was made between the children with intellectual disabilities and regular class children of comparable developmental level (mental age). The children with intellectual disabilities were also compared with regular class children of comparable chronological age. Subjects completed a preliminary task to determine mastery of the required skills before attempting an experimental problem solving game. The game required subjects to ask questions in order to achieve a problem solution. Each subject's level of motivation to solve the problem was also measured using a …
An Electronic Storage And Access System For Special Education Legislation, Courtney Siler Frantz
An Electronic Storage And Access System For Special Education Legislation, Courtney Siler Frantz
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In the field of education, instructional leaders must know the regulations governing the assessment, curriculum, and instruction of all students. An area of special concern is the regulations governing programs for students with disabilities. Although the average population of students with disabilities may represent less than 10% of the total student body, the school administrator is responsible for maintaining access to the most current regulations, for accurately interpreting, and effectively implementing federal and state mandates to ensure that the due process rights of the students with disabilities are upheld. Yet the laws and regulations governing special education programs are continually …
The Effect Of A Structured Narrative Programme On Language Disordered Children, Rosemary J. Simpson
The Effect Of A Structured Narrative Programme On Language Disordered Children, Rosemary J. Simpson
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study examined the effectiveness of a structured narrative programme which had been developed to improve the narrative skills of children attending a Language Development Centre in Western Australia. The research was conducted over an eight week period with eight Year One (ie -6 years old) boys who had been diagnosed as having severe language disorders. A single subject research design was used to investigate the narrative development of the students. The design followed the ABAB format (baseline experimental design-baseline-experimental design) as outlined in Tawney and Gast (1984). The number of words used by each subject, the number of adverbials …

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
Editor's Message
The prospect of bringing off a new journal is character building, I have come to believe—particularly when it is published only once a year and by a fledging organization. The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning (JAEPL) had to be good, very good, especially the inaugural issue. That this was the first issue also meant, I hoped, that readers would tolerate mistakes. Surely, mistakes could be corrected with the next issue. But on second thought, that was a long year away.
Nonetheless, I celebrate the occasion of the inaugural issue of JAEPL. …

Investigation Of The Prevalence Of Learning Disabilities Within The Home-School Population Of Southwest Michigan, Paul Steven Kitchen
Investigation Of The Prevalence Of Learning Disabilities Within The Home-School Population Of Southwest Michigan, Paul Steven Kitchen
Dissertations
Problem. The special education needs of home-school children have rarely been studied. This research utilizes the homeschool population of Southwest Michigan to investigate the incidence of learning disabilities (LD) within this group. At the same time, it is possible to investigate some of the criticisms of the learning disability field of study.
Method. Two hundred ninety-eight home-school children in southwest Michigan were assessed for LD using the Michigan State Board of Education definitional criteria. Achievement was assessed by use of the Wide Range Achievement Test, third revision. Ability was measured with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, third revision. …
The Effects Of The Add Label On Teachers' Attitudes And Expectations, Catherine Moreton
The Effects Of The Add Label On Teachers' Attitudes And Expectations, Catherine Moreton
Theses : Honours
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is rapidly becoming an important educational issue. Although much research has been conducted into the effects of labelling and teachers' attitudes and expectations on children's academic and social behaviour, little research has been conducted into the relationship between the label 'ADD' and teachers' attitudes and expectations. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the ADD label on teachers' attitudes and expectations for children with ADD. In addition, the effects of teachers personal characteristics on their attitudes and expectations for children with ADD, and teachers perceptions of issues surrounding ADD were investigated. …
