Incorporating Technology Within Classroom Literacy Experiences, Lisa Kervin, Jessica Mantei Dec 2011

Incorporating Technology Within Classroom Literacy Experiences, Lisa Kervin, Jessica Mantei

Jessica Mantei

Educators are challenged to consider ways that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can be included within classroom contexts. Such challenges often require the adoption of whole school, team and individual focus as technology is examined in connection with the needs of the learners within the school and the pedagogical understandings and beliefs of the educators. In this paper we describe an elementary school-based project that focuses on ways that computer-based technology and associated peripherals can be incorporated within classroom literacy experiences. As we examine the planning, implementation and our reflections upon this process some key findings emerged. The need for …

Advertising In "Tween" Magazines: Exploring The Considerations And Opportunities, Lisa K. Kervin, Jessica Mantei

Jessica Mantei

Many children in our classrooms have competence when interacting with visual and print based texts. While the familiarity may well exist, there is a need to examine children’s ability to sort through and make meaning from the myriad of messages, commercial and otherwise, which they encounter. While some argue that children are empowered by the ability to use and manipulate popular culture for their own purposes (Harding, 2004), others voice concern that this market is vulnerable to negative effects of media. In Australia both the number of magazines targeting children, and the readership of these magazines, is high and increasing. …

Engaging Early Career Teachers In 'Virtual Writing Conferences' With Grade Five Students, Lisa K. Kervin, Jessica Mantei Dec 2011

Engaging Early Career Teachers In 'Virtual Writing Conferences' With Grade Five Students, Lisa K. Kervin, Jessica Mantei

Jessica Mantei

The changing definition of what it means to be literate is well documented within the literature. The familiarity of many students with screen-based texts and their ability to manipulate computer-based technologies, in particular Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), is well understood. There are examples within the literature of how technology can be used to support the writing process (Turbill & Murray, 2006), provide students with control over the phases of text production (Novinger & Smith, 2003) and the need for teachers to create authentic and engaging experiences (Kervin & Mantei, 2006; Peterson, 2005). Taking such perspectives into consideration, we worked …

Jessica Mantei

This paper describes a major development and research study that investigated the use of mobile technologies in higher education. The project investigated the educational potential of two ubiquitous mobile devices: Palm smart phones and iPod digital audio players (mp3 players). An action learning framework for professional development was designed and implemented with a group of teachers from a Faculty of Education. Each teacher or team created pedagogies to implement appropriate use of a mobile device in different subject areas in higher education. This paper describes the project aims, design and implementation in four phases, together with a description of the …

Taking Ipods Into The Field To Capture And Share Teacher Wisdom Stories, Lisa K. Kervin, Jessica Mantei Dec 2011

Taking Ipods Into The Field To Capture And Share Teacher Wisdom Stories, Lisa K. Kervin, Jessica Mantei

Jessica Mantei

Mobile technologies offer significant possibilities for educators. This paper explores the use of iPods as a tool to bring together the teaching field and the tertiary classroom. We have designed a learning experience to engage our students in collecting and reflecting upon knowledge shared by practitioners in the field. It builds upon the premise that educators need to consistently gather and evaluate evidence to inform their professional practice. The task encourages students to consider the ‘teacher wisdom’ (Labbo, Leu, Kinzer, Teale, Cammack, Kara-Soteriou, & Sanny, 2003) that can be gathered and disseminated through ‘new literacies’ (such as podcasts) as they …

This Is Me! Empowering Children To Talk About Their Learning Through Digital Story, Jessica Mantei, Lisa K. Kervin Dec 2011

This Is Me! Empowering Children To Talk About Their Learning Through Digital Story, Jessica Mantei, Lisa K. Kervin

Jessica Mantei

The transition from pre-school to Kindergarten is an important part of a child’s learning journey. In the early childhood setting children develop interests, knowledge and learning preferences that often remain unknown in the early days of Kindergarten. We argue that from this young age children can identify and articulate learning preferences as they use their literate practices to communicate their preferences, aspirations and reflections. Digital Stories are short, personal, multimedia presentations created through image (from still and/or video cameras), which are then edited on a computer with video editing software to include a spoken narrative. In this paper we share …

Turning Into Teachers Before Our Eyes: The Development Of Professional Identity Through Professional Dialogue, Jessica Mantei, Lisa Kervin Dec 2011

Turning Into Teachers Before Our Eyes: The Development Of Professional Identity Through Professional Dialogue, Jessica Mantei, Lisa Kervin

Jessica Mantei

This paper examines the development of professional identity in early career teachers enrolled in an “add-on year” of an undergraduate teacher education degree. Through a series of readings focused on reflection and pedagogy, participants engaged in professional dialogue as they made connections between the themes in their professional readings and their own understanding of the professional practice of a teacher. Dialogue was recorded and shared on a developed website. Participation in this dialogue afforded teachers opportunities to reflect on their professional identity in connection with literature, personal experiences and experiences of others. Further, uploading audio files to the site created …

Weaving Virtual Service Networks Into Regional Cities: “Nurture The Body Here, And Offer The Mind Anywhere” – Anecdotes From The Coffs Harbour Community Forums To Minimise Carbon Usage And Maximise Regional Innovation, Kurt W. Seemann Dec 2011

Seemann

Kurt W Seemann

Almost all cities around the world are looking for ways to ease the pressure upon them where caused by a migratory drift from rural and regional areas into to the economic and service hubs that they offer. At the same time, rural and regional areas are losing the idyllic appeal of a “country” or “rural- coastal” lifestyle due to issues related mostly to access to services and employment security. During 2011, the community of Coffs Harbour engaged in a series of public forums to discuss ideas for how to attract more professional people into the area (especially people with capacity …

Landownership problem and control of resources remains as a political development issue in the Philippines. Agrarian reform is a necessary condition for agricultural modernization and rural industrialization and the fundamental mooring for global competition. Agrarian Reform has contributed to improvement of the socio-economic conditions of landless farmers and political development of the Philippines in terms of engaging the landless in the process of policy making and distribution of large private landholdings to the landless. Referendar Estados De Excepção, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2011

Referendar Estados De Excepção, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Reaching Beyond Borders Through Service Learning, Terri Carney

Terri M. Carney

When university Spanish programs integrate a service learning pedagogy into their curriculum, they establish mutually beneficial relationships with the local Latino population. Indeed, all participants benefit: College Spanish students deepen their learning experience, Latino students in public school ESL programs receive individualized tutoring, and the college professor emerges from academic isolation to do the work of a public intellectual.

Development Of The Motivational Interviewing Supervision And Training Scale, Michael B. Madson, Todd Campbell, David E. Barrett, Michael J. Brondino, Timothy P. Melchert

Todd Campbell

The movement to use empirically supported treatments has increased the need for researchers and supervisors to evaluate therapists’ adherence to and the quality with which they implement those interventions. Few empirically supported approaches exist for providing these types of evaluations. This is also true for motivational interviewing, an empirically supported intervention important in the addictions field. This study describes the development and psychometric evaluation of the Motivational Interviewing Supervision and Training Scale (MISTS), a measure intended for use in training and supervising therapists implementing motivational interviewing. Satisfactory interrater reliability was found (generalizability coefficient p2 = .79), and evidence was found …

The Family Physician's Role With Parents Of Young Children With Developmental Disabilities, Howard Parette, Jack Hourcade, R. Brimberry

Jack Hourcade

Technological advances, coupled with recent federal legislation targeting young children who have developmental disabilities, will increasingly necessitate an expanded role of the family physician in the lives of these children and their families. Of particular importance is Public Law 99-457, the Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments of 1986, which recognizes the importance of the family unit in any intervention methodology that may be provided. This legislation also notes that the active involvement of the family's physician is desirable when designing services appropriate for children with developmental disabilities and their families. Providing support and optimizing positive family interactions are crucial …

After our mathematics or science education research project has been completed, it is natural for us to wish to step back and catch our breath for a moment. However, there is still a critical step remaining in our scholarship. We must decide on a vehicle to share our new knowledge with others. There are many ways to disseminate our research results, including submitting project reports and presenting at professional meetings. However, for most of us, the scholarly vehicle of choice remains a professional journal.

Designing Effective Online Educational Literature Searches: Procedures For Content Analysis And Validation, Robert Sandieson, Jack Hourcade, Val Sharpe

Jack Hourcade

Knowing the existing research literature has become important for anyone involved with education, informed research, policy, and practice rests on an understanding of unfiltered original source material. Although there has been a proliferation of research studies which are now easily accessible through online resources, being able to find information on specific topics is proving to be a challenge even for experienced researchers. This chapter describes a procedure which first identified field-specific terminology associated with original source material. The parallel terms used in the ERIC database to code the same material was then found. The resulting parallel list of ERIC keywords …
