Helping College Students Climb Onto The Lifelong Learning Scaffold And Grapple With Real Life Skills, Debbie Morrow Oct 2011

Helping College Students Climb Onto The Lifelong Learning Scaffold And Grapple With Real Life Skills, Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

College students today must “learn how to learn” – the content of their college courses will only scratch the surface of what they’ll need to know in the years following graduation, and the ocean of information is wide and deep. Teaching of information literacy skills is ideally closely tied to disciplinary and professional standards, curricular goals, course objectives, and assignment requirements. And ideally librarians can be partners with disciplinary faculty in strategically introducing IL skills into key courses and assignments at selected points in a curriculum. This session will explore a particularly fortuitous convergence of needs and opportunities leading to …

The GVSU University Libraries has responded in the last five years to internal and external emphases on assessing student learning outcomes and our contributions to student learning. We’ve conducted a higher-level information literacy assessment, and have made a priority of developing information literacy tools for use by classroom faculty. We have twice administered SAILS, the "Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills," to provide us with a broad benchmark measure of student IL skills against a cohort of our institutional peers. We discovered that large scale efforts such as SAILS can be at odds with our approach to IL, proving to …

Many of our students are first generation and work full time. Our poster will illustrate the use of video presence to allow students to: virtually meet with faculty; participate in group projects from six locations; learn research strategies; develop better communication skills to become better speakers by using face-to-face interact ion. Students connect with alumni in the field sharing real-time work experiences. Significant savings have been realized across campus with online interviewing using this technology.

Implementing And Evaluating A "Next Generation Learning Space": A Pilot Study, Gail Wilson, Marcus Randall Sep 2011

Implementing And Evaluating A "Next Generation Learning Space": A Pilot Study, Gail Wilson, Marcus Randall

Marcus Randall

A dramatic, pedagogical shift has occurred in recent years in educational environments in higher education, supported largely by the use of ubiquitous technologies. Increasingly, emphasis is being placed on the design of new learning spaces, often referred to as "Next Generation Learning Spaces" and their impact on pedagogy. The idea of "classroom" now incorporates the use of both physical and virtual space. This change has meant a greater focus on the design and use of flexible learning spaces, more use of blended learning approaches and more personalised, individualised learning opportunities for students. While many such classrooms have been built and …

Observe, Experience And Integrate: Enhancing Professional Development Using International Study Tours, Li-Anne Woo, Titan Liu, Justin Craig, Timothy Kiessling

Justin B. Craig

This chapter provides evidence of the positive benefits associated with adopting an international study tour as a unique and effective professional development tool. Specifically, we show how involvement in an international study tour has the potential to make a significant contribution to students' ability to lead, their understanding of how important it is to show initiative particularly in uncertain situations and to be an effective contributor to a team. We couch our conversation within Kolb's (1984) experiential learning frame and use Bloom's Taxonomy (Bloom et al., 1956) to illustrate how the study tour's learning objectives are assessed. Finally, we discuss …

Perceived Parental Investment In School As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Socio-Economic Indicators And Educational Outcomes In Rural America, Kimberly L. Henry, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Eugene R. Oetting

Thomas M. Cavanagh

Each year, 1.3 million students fail to graduate, dropping the United States’ high school graduation rate to 69%. One of the most salient predictors of high school dropout is socio-economic status (SES), which makes important an improved understanding of the reasons why SES affects educational outcomes. In this study, multilevel mediation models were utilized to examine parental investment in school as a mediator of the relationship between SES and educational outcomes among an ethnically diverse sample of 64,350 7th to 9th grade students from 199 rural communities and towns in the U.S. (50% male, 63% non-Hispanic White). These relationships were …

Thinking Like Thinkers: Is The Art And Discipline Of An "Attitude Of Suspended Conclusion" Lost On Lawyers?, Donald J. Kochan

Donald J. Kochan

In his 1910 book, How We Think, John Dewey proclaimed that “the most important factor in the training of good mental habits consists in acquainting the attitude of suspended conclusion. . .” This Article explores that insight and describes its meaning and significance in the enterprise of thinking generally and its importance in law school education specifically. It posits that the law would be best served if lawyers think like thinkers and adopt an attitude of suspended conclusion in their problem solving affairs. Only when conclusion is suspended is there space for the exploration of the subject at hand. The …

Adventure Racing And Organizational Behavior: Using Eco Challenge Video Clips To Stimulate Learning, Amy Kenworthy-U'Ren, Anthony Erickson

Amy L. Kenworthy

In this article, the Eco Challenge race video is presented as a teaching tool for facilitating theory-based discussion and application in organizational behavior (OB) courses. Before discussing the intricacies of the video series itself, the authors present a pedagogically based rationale for using reality TV-based video segments in a classroom setting. They then describe the Eco Challenge race series, with an overview of how it is used to facilitate application of course concepts, encourage attention and interest in the course, and provide a frame of reference for other experiential activities and assessment in the course. Readers are encouraged to use …

Expanding The Conversation: Perspective Taking As A Civic Outcome Of College, Robert D. Reason May 2011

Expanding The Conversation: Perspective Taking As A Civic Outcome Of College, Robert D. Reason

Robert D Reason

The conversation about essential learning outcomes of college has never been more active or important. Although much of the attention on learning outcomes is narrowly focused on cognitive outcomes, especially critical thinking, the need to educate students for personal and social responsibility has never been clearer. In this article the author draws upon data from the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ Core Commitments: Educating Students for Personal and Social Responsibility initiative to argue that one dimension of personal and social responsibility, taking seriously the perspectives of others, is essential to active citizenship in today’s diverse democracy and, therefore, an …

Reclaiming Social Justice: A Position Paper Investigating Competing Representations Of Adult Education And Its Purpose In A Neo-Liberal World, C. Amelia Davis, Keara Sodano Apr 2011

Reclaiming Social Justice: A Position Paper Investigating Competing Representations Of Adult Education And Its Purpose In A Neo-Liberal World, C. Amelia Davis, Keara Sodano

C. Amelia Davis

The push towards globalization puts the world’s wealth in the hands of only a few, creating political and social discourses that lead to competing representations of adult education and its purpose. In this paper, we argue that neo-liberalism has had divergent effects on the conceptualization and practices of adult education, fostering conflicting ideologies and practices of human resource development and social justice. We charge adult educators to reclaim social justice as the purpose of adult education, establishing a force of transformation and communication that calls for a new social order of collectivism, justice, and democracy

From Embedded To Integrated: Digital Information Literacy And New Teaching Models For Academic Librarians, Rob Morrison, Larissa Garcia

Rob Morrison

This paper describes our experience launching LIBR 200, moving beyond traditional library instruction to integrating digital information literacy into the larger curriculum. By creating a credit course that focuses on digital information literacy, the NLU Library was able to fill a void in the general education curriculum, thus making it possible for LIBR 200 to be included in undergraduate degree programs. Because librarians are faculty and have fostered a positive and collaborative reputation throughout the University, the library faculty role has evolved to include participation in program development and the development and teaching of library credit courses in order to …

Using A Sequential Exploratory Mixed-Method Design To Examine Racial Hyperprivilege In Higher Education, Nolan L. Cabrera Jan 2011

Using A Sequential Exploratory Mixed-Method Design To Examine Racial Hyperprivilege In Higher Education, Nolan L. Cabrera

Nolan L. Cabrera

This chapter uses a mixed-method approach to critically examine white male college students’ racial ideologies and the experiences that influence racial ideology formation. It highlights both how racial privilege is recreated in higher education and how mixedmethods and intersectionality approaches to institutional research allow more robust analytical possibilities.
