What Makes A Difference? Measuring Non-Academic Outcomes, Prue Anderson, Julian Fraillon Sep 2015

What Makes A Difference? Measuring Non-Academic Outcomes, Prue Anderson, Julian Fraillon

Prue Anderson

There are some very real challenges that educators face in attempting to define, measure and improve the non-academic outcomes of students in Australian schools but there is plenty that can be done to better measure and influence them. There are many challenges in measuring non-academic outcomes but the overarching one is to determine what they are, and whether they are actually 'non-academic' at all. This article addresses each of three major challenges: (1) Defining the outcomes, followed by a recommendation; (2) measuring the outcomes; recommendation; and (3) improving outcomes; recommendation.

Literacy Learning: What Works For Young Indigenous Students??, Nola Purdie, Kate Reid, Sarah Buckley Jul 2013

Literacy Learning: What Works For Young Indigenous Students??, Nola Purdie, Kate Reid, Sarah Buckley

Dr Sarah Buckley

The Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Study for Indigenous Students (ILLANS) tracked the growth in literacy and numeracy skills of a group of Indigenous students from 27 schools across Australia from the beginning of primary school until the end of Year 6. At the time the study was conceived, longitudinal studies on the school achievement of Indigenous students were comparatively rare. A desire to develop a broader picture of primary school experiences motivated data collection that included a range of other data from a variety of informants in addition to academic achievement data. ILLANS commenced in 2000, with the first phase …

The Contribution Of Iea Research Studies To Australian Education, John Ainley, John Keeves, Jan Lokan, Petra Lietz, Geoff Masters, Sue Thomson

Prof Geoff Masters AO

This chapter is concerned with the contribution of the research studies conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) to Australian education. During a period of 50 years education across the world has undergone a remarkable transformation. Many of the changes that have occurred have been initiated by the United Nations Organization and its agen¬cies, particularly UNESCO. From its origins within the UNESCO Institute in Hamburg, IEA and its programs have evolved to develop the worldwide conduct of research in education both through the undertaking and reporting of studies as well as the informal training of …

The International Civic And Citizenship Education Study (Iccs), Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon, John Ainley

Dr Wolfram Schulz

The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) investigated the ways in which young people are prepared for, and consequently ready and able to undertake their roles as citizens. Consequently, it studied student knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship as well as affective and behavioral aspects of civics and citizenship such as value beliefs, attitudes, intended behaviors and current activities related to civic and citizenship education. Contextual data from education systems and schools were analyzed to help explain variation in these outcome variables. ICCS built on the previous IEA studies of civic education (Arnadeo et. al., 2002; Schulz …

Creating Print-Rich Learning Centers, Juli Pool, Deborah Carter

Juli Lull Pool

The article offers ways on how teachers can create a print-rich pre-school environment to help children improve their literacy skills. It mentions that teachers can share books to children for them to become motivated in learning. It also suggests the need to provide writing materials that encourage children's language development and self-expression. Furthermore, teachers can conduct a dramatic play to allow children to take on roles and express their ideas.

Interpersonal Cognitive Problem-Solving Intervention With Five Adults With Intellectual Impairment And The Impact On Self-Esteem, Problem-Solving Self-Concept, Socialisation And Self-Direction, Roselyn Dixon, H Marsh, Rhonda Craven

Rose Dixon

This study reported the design and implementation of an interpersonal cognitive problem-solving intervention to increase the social skills of people with intellectual disabilities whose community placement was considered vulnerable because they exhibited challenging behaviours. The study used a single subject multiple baseline methodology to assess the impact of the intervention. However, a novel feature of the intervention was the emphasis on generalisation to the community setting and maintenance over time. As part of the assessment procedures pre- and post-test measures were taken on self esteem, problem-solving self-concept, locus of control and real life behaviours related to socialisation and self-direction. The …

Healthy Dogs, Healthy Communities: Sharing Dog Caring Knowledges, Sophie Constable, Roselyn Dixon, Robert Dixon

Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory have expressed the desire for veterinarians to share their dog caring knowledge with communities. This paper discusses the approach of the 'Healthy Dogs Healthy Communities' project in exploring ways of bringing vets, health researchers, elders, and community members together to share dog-caring knowledges. Currently, a pilot study is being conducted in Yuendumu to trial a generative curriculum model as an approach to sharing and discussing knowledges in order to create locally relevant and culturally appropriate ways to support dog health into the future. The paper also addresses the features of the generative model and …

Blogs As A Social Networking Tool To Build Community, Lisa Kervin, Jessica Mantei, Anthony Herrington

Jessica Mantei

This chapter examines blogging as a social networking tool to engage final year preservice teachers in reflective processes. Using a developed Web site, the students post their own blogs and comment upon those of others. The authors argue that opportunity to engage with this networking experience provides avenue for the students to consider their emerging professional identity as teachers. The blogging mechanism brought together the physical university context and virtual online environment as students identified, examined and reflected upon the intricacies of what it means to be a teacher. The authors hope that examining the findings that emerged from this …

The Family Physician's Role With Parents Of Young Children With Developmental Disabilities, Howard Parette, Jack Hourcade, R. Brimberry

Jack Hourcade

Technological advances, coupled with recent federal legislation targeting young children who have developmental disabilities, will increasingly necessitate an expanded role of the family physician in the lives of these children and their families. Of particular importance is Public Law 99-457, the Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments of 1986, which recognizes the importance of the family unit in any intervention methodology that may be provided. This legislation also notes that the active involvement of the family's physician is desirable when designing services appropriate for children with developmental disabilities and their families. Providing support and optimizing positive family interactions are crucial …

Writing For Publication, Jack Hourcade, Holly Anderson

Jack Hourcade

After our mathematics or science education research project has been completed, it is natural for us to wish to step back and catch our breath for a moment. However, there is still a critical step remaining in our scholarship. We must decide on a vehicle to share our new knowledge with others. There are many ways to disseminate our research results, including submitting project reports and presenting at professional meetings. However, for most of us, the scholarly vehicle of choice remains a professional journal.

Designing Effective Online Educational Literature Searches: Procedures For Content Analysis And Validation, Robert Sandieson, Jack Hourcade, Val Sharpe

Jack Hourcade

Knowing the existing research literature has become important for anyone involved with education, informed research, policy, and practice rests on an understanding of unfiltered original source material. Although there has been a proliferation of research studies which are now easily accessible through online resources, being able to find information on specific topics is proving to be a challenge even for experienced researchers. This chapter describes a procedure which first identified field-specific terminology associated with original source material. The parallel terms used in the ERIC database to code the same material was then found. The resulting parallel list of ERIC keywords …
