Human Resources Development: Literacy, Schooling, Nonformal Education, Women's Education, David R. Evans

David R. Evans

Education in Namibia under the illegal colonial regime (was) characterized by inequality, segregation and other apartheid conditions...Schools for various population groups are segregated along racial and ethnic lines. Ethnicity is promoted at the cost of national unity by the provision of segregated schools, linguistic segregation, and curricula that attempt to promote the special status of whites. While education is compulsory for whites, there are not enough schools for Africans. The schools for Africans are staffed with unqualified or inadequately qualified teachers... Pupil to teacher ratios in the African schools are much higher than those in the white schools. Funds allocated …

"Bridging The Ravine"; Or, The Joint Library Automation Project Of Henderson State And Ouachita Baptist University, Marilyn Martin, S. Ray Granade, Robert Yehl

Articles

Automating a library is challenging, frustrating and rewarding. It requires detailed, often tedious planning, and enormous amounts of patience. Software glitches, hardware failures, and miscommunication between automation vendors and library staff are common complaints found in the library literature. These problems loom large when any library automates. When two libraries undertake such a project together, problems proliferate. The automation project of Ouachita Baptist University (OBU) and Henderson State University (HSU) Libraries illustrates problems inherent in any automation, some unique to joint endeavors, and others representative of cooperation between a public and a private institution. Above all, it illustrates how a …

A Comparison Of Outcome Reinforcement Contingencies And Process Reinforcement Contingencies Using Concurrent Training With The Severely Mentally Impaired, Nancy Lonsberry

Masters Theses

This study compared the effectiveness of Outcome and Process reinforcement contingencies using concurrent training to teach severely mentally impaired students to perform component tasks. Each student was trained to assemble a four-piece apparatus using either the Outcome contingency or the Process contingency. The Outcome method was defined as a contingency where the final outcome of a component task has been achieved and a reinforcer is delivered contingent upon that outcome. The Process method was defined as a contingency where reinforcement occurs after the performance of each step in the sequence and when the final outcome of the task has been …

Analysis Of The Relationship Between Levels Of Ability Grouped Students & Their Attitudes Toward Teachers & The Learning Process, Martha Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the ability grouping of a student and his/her attitude toward teachers and the learning process. Three groups of students enrolled in the Logan County School System in the spring of 1988 were administered the Arlin-Hills Attitude Survey. These groups of students were those who had been identified as gifted/talented, special education (EMH or LD) and regular class students. The findings of this study indicated that the three groups did not differ significantly in attitudes toward teachers or attitudes toward the learning process.

The Acquisition Of Spelling By Developmentally Disabled Adults: An Examination Of Some Variations Of The Look-Cover-Write-Check Cycle, Mark Stafford Jun 1990

The Acquisition Of Spelling By Developmentally Disabled Adults: An Examination Of Some Variations Of The Look-Cover-Write-Check Cycle, Mark Stafford

Masters Theses

Five developmentally disabled adults were taught to spell groups of five words using the look-over-write-check cycle, in which the subject looks at the word, covers it, writes the word, then looks at the word again to check the accuracy of spelling. Four variations of this procedure were used with each of the subjects including requiring the subjects to spell the words out loud in the "look" component. The results showed that the subjects required fewer sessions and fewer trials to spell the five words when the out loud requirement was in effect. Approximations generated as the subjects learned to spell …

The Nontraditional Student At Ferris State University: Implications For Recruitment And Retention, Sharon K. Octernaud

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As the number of high school graduates decreases, Ferris State University (FSU) will increasingly compete with the other fourteen state universities, community colleges, and private schools for high school students. Therefore, in a effort to maintain current enrollment levels, Ferris will need to recruit actively nontraditional students (students aged twenty-five and older). The recognition of and adaptation to the changes in the Ferris student population are of utmost importance to the university if administrators and faculty are to assess successfully the effects of this population on the institution's academic programs and fiscal health. Prior to this study, no one at …
