Fostering Engagement Through Inquiry-Based Learning, Lauren Zanoni Apr 2109

Fostering Engagement Through Inquiry-Based Learning, Lauren Zanoni

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Inquiry-based learning (IBL) occurs when students engage in work that mirrors elements of the scientific process, such as conducting an investigation and communicating results (Martin-Hansen, 2002). Similar to the inquiry process, in Genius Hour students choose a topic they are passionate about, and engage in research and reflection as they create a finished project (Juliani, 2007). In my study, I determined how the incorporation of inquiry-based learning in a fifth grade classroom facilitates students’ cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement. Within this study, cognitive engagement refers to students’ investment and motivation to learn, behavioral engagement involves the positive conduct students show ...

Mapping Renewal: How An Unexpected Interdisciplinary Collaboration Transformed A Digital Humanities Project, Elise Tanner, Geoffrey Joseph

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Funded by a National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Foundations Grant, the UA Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture’s “Mapping Renewal” pilot project focused on creating access to and providing spatial context to archival materials related to racial segregation and urban renewal in the city of Little Rock, Arkansas, from 1954-1989. An unplanned interdisciplinary collaboration with the UA Little Rock Arkansas Economic Development Institute (AEDI) has proven to be an invaluable partnership. One team member from each department will demonstrate the Mapping Renewal website and discuss how the collaborative process has changed and ...

The Multifaceted Process of Language Attrition

Ryanne Mikunda

Ethan Krase

This research project defines and examines the many factors that influence the process of language attrition, which is an individual's loss of skill in a language that is not caused by a medical condition, i.e., is non-pathological. To begin, this study offers a brief history of first and second language attrition to establish language attrition's role in both the fields of second language acquisition and minority language loss. This history also outlines the parameters under which language attrition is studied, and the required conditions that precede it ...

B2: Presence Of Immunosuppressive Drugs Affect Innate Immune Response And Monocyte Differentiation In Lung Transplant Patients, Inayat Kaur Oms Iii, Ryan Wang Oms Ii, Amy E.L. Stone

Annual Research Symposium

Lung transplant patients are administered Immunosuppressive Drugs (ISDs) to prevent transplant rejection, but this also puts them at constant risk of infection due to the decreased ability of the immune system to respond to subsequent infections by viruses, bacteria etc.

Purpose

This paper focuses on the effect of ISDs on the innate immune response. We are using different parts of viruses and bacteria and allowing them to represent the organism as a whole.

Methods

As representatives of the innate immune system, we are going to be testing monocyte, macrophage, and dendritic cell lineages. We are hypothesizing that the presence of ...
