Pupil transportation is coming to be considered an indispensable service in the West Virginia school systems. In the year 1941-42 more than 132,885 pupils were transported to and from West Virginia schools daily. This was an increase of 77,886 over the number transported in 1932-33 or an increase of about 8,660 annually.

The average daily attendance in the public elementary and secondary schools of West Virginia for the year 1941-42 and 395, 065 which shows that 33.63 per cent of all the pupils attending the public school were transported at public expense. The sum of $2,142,943.40 was spent for transportation, …

In 1936 there was considerable dissatisfaction with the rating scale being used in the supervision of student teaching at the Central Washington College of Education, and it was felt that a new scale was needed. Consequently, three faculty members, the primary supervisor, the supervisor of rural teaching, and the director of personnel and placement decided to make a detailed study and to construct a new rating scale. The Ellensburg scale, originally evolved for the rating of student teachers with emphasis on guiding their growth, should be equally helpful in the rating and guidance of teachers in service.

Among these is the oversupply of trained teachers and of candidates for admittance to teacher-training institutions. What candidates shall be selected for training? The purpose of this study is to investigae the relationship between Latin and French, between Latin and Spanish, and to evaluate the assumption of many language teachers that high school pupuls who have had one year of Latin tended, on the whole, because of that fact, to do better academic work in Franch and Spanish as measured in terms of marks received, than did pupils who had not studied Latin.

The individual who lacks the use of his voice as a musical instrument lacks the natural, fundamental medium of musical expression. Not only does he lack the means for the closest and most direct relationship with music, but also there is a serious danger that, as a result, his whole range of musical appreciation will be impaired and finally obliterated. This is likely to occur because he does not have at his command and under his control this power which he so definitely needs. Children who are thus handicapped are often designated by the use of the word monotone.

Popular opinion is divided into two general groups as to the value of basketball activities, one group holding that training in basketball will transfer to actual life situations, while the other contends that it is a waste of time to spend hours in practicing and in trips which necessitate absence from academic work. The majority of studies of non-attendance heve dealt with the entire student body of a school system where the pupils come from many racial or national groups with different economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. In studies where the same racial group was selected the physical environment or the social or economic status of the students differed widely. In the spring of 1938 the placement office of the Central Washington College of Education submitted a questionnaire to school superintendents in ninety communities in the state of Washington and asked their cooperation in filling it out. The purposes of the questionnaire were three : ( 1) to secure the reactions of school superintendents to placement practices and procedures now in vogue ; ( 2) to discover local conditions, individual preferences, community prejudices etc. which have a direct bearing on teacher placement; ( 3) to secure frank criticisms of placement service rendered and suggestions on the improvement of training-institution functions.
