The Golden Age: Service Management On Transatlantic Ocean Liners, Patrick J. Murphy, R. W. Coye Dec 2006

The Golden Age: Service Management On Transatlantic Ocean Liners, Patrick J. Murphy, R. W. Coye

Patrick J. Murphy

Purpose – The paper seeks to explore lessons in service delivery from an industry that no longer exists. The transatlantic passenger liner dramatizes some of the most unique challenges of service delivery. The ship itself was a delivery mechanism completely separated from support services. Customers were essentially contained for extended periods. Whereas all customers received the same core transportation service, peripheral services varied substantially by service class.

Design/methodology/approach – Description of the historical context is followed by examinations of passenger and service provider perspectives to illustrate services expected and delivered. Primary and secondary source material is used to exemplify service …

The Communication Of Corporate Social Responsibility: United States And European Union Multinational Corporations, Laura Hartman, Robert Rubin, Kathy Dhanda Dec 2006

The Communication Of Corporate Social Responsibility: United States And European Union Multinational Corporations, Laura Hartman, Robert Rubin, Kathy Dhanda

Kathy K Dhanda

This study explores corporate social responsibility (CSR) by conducting a cross-cultural analysis of communication of CSR activities in a total of 16 U.S. and European corporations. Drawing on previous research contrasting two major approaches to CSR initiatives, it was proposed that U.S. companies would tend to communicate about and justify CSR using economic or bottom-line terms and arguments whereas European companies would rely more heavily on language or theories of citizenship, corporate accountability or moral commitment. Results supported this expectation of difference, with some modification. Specifically, results indicated that EU companies do not value sustainability to the exclusion of financial …

Global Competition’S Perfect Storm: Why Business And Labor Cannot Solve Their Problems Alone, Denise M. Rousseau, Rosemary Batt Dec 2006

Global Competition’S Perfect Storm: Why Business And Labor Cannot Solve Their Problems Alone, Denise M. Rousseau, Rosemary Batt

Rosemary Batt

A perfect storm is a conjoining of forces that intensifies effects. This commentary addresses the economic perfect storm that the United States and many other developed countries face as they attempt to become globally competitive. Its forces conflate strategic change with the erosion of employment and income security as firms shed labor and old institutional arrangements, in turn degrading quality of work and family life for workers as well as the futures of retirees. We evaluate the responses of our commentators—Louis Uchitelle, J.T. Battenberg III, and Thomas Kochan—who assess the current crisis and possible solutions to it. Their responses and …

Typology Of Sponsorship Activity, Peter Thompson, Richard Speed Dec 2006

Typology Of Sponsorship Activity, Peter Thompson, Richard Speed

Richard Speed

As the use of sponsorships in marketing has increased the combinations of sponsorship resources and sponsor objectives have become increasingly complexity and varied. However to ability to accurately compare sponsorship opportunities in different circumstances researchers and firms need to be able to identify the degree of similarity between sponsorships. This paper begins this process by proposing a set of archetypal sponsorships, a typology, against which real sponsorships can be classified.

Southeast Asian Culture, Human Development And Business Competitiveness. Journal Of Asian Business Studies, Helen Lavan

Helen LaVan

Competition and entrepreneurship are driving forces in the development of economic systems. They create jobs, new opportunities to generate value, and lead to the fulfillment of personal career and life goals. As such, it is important to understand the basic economic and cultural factors that influence these activities in developing economies. We undertook a series of analyses in an examination of a heterogeneous sample of economic zones in Southeast Asia. Results illustrate relations between national culture, human development, and business and growth competitiveness. Implications hold that human development and power distance are enablers of entrepreneurial activities in these cultural and …

Hidden Messages – A Polysemic Reading Of Tourist Brochures, J Edelheim Dec 2006

Hidden Messages – A Polysemic Reading Of Tourist Brochures, J Edelheim

Johan Edelheim

It is self-evident that tourist brochures are selling a positive and attractive destination to travellers; what is not as self-evident are the hidden messages conveyed by the selection of certain pictures in the brochures produced. By coding each picture appearing in a series of tourist brochures according to their content this research aims at showing how the brochures are overtly aimed at different groups of travellers, while they simultaneously are reinforcing certain hegemonic views of society. The suggestion that hegemonic messages appear is not an accusation, against the producers, of the brochures of covert propaganda, but rather that taken-for-granted views …

Knowledge Search And Its Effects On The International Diffusion Of Knowledge, Wenyue Zhuang, Kwanghui Lim, Poh-Kam Wong Dec 2006

Knowledge Search And Its Effects On The International Diffusion Of Knowledge, Wenyue Zhuang, Kwanghui Lim, Poh-Kam Wong

Kwanghui Lim

While research has shown that knowledge spillovers are geographically localized, the globalization of R&D is making international knowledge diffusion increasingly important. We propose that the propensity and speed with which technological knowledge diffuses across national borders is influenced by signals and cues during the search for new knowledge. In the context of the global information storage technology, we show that patented knowledge with high technological impact has higher propensity and speed of international diffusion than low impact knowledge. Moreover, an organization’s technological strength increases the likelihood and speed of international citation of its innovations, while internal appropriation efforts reduce diffusion.

Mapping The Bounds Of Incoherence: How Far Can You Go And How Does It Affect Your Brand?, Ujwal Kayande, John H. Roberts, Gary L. Lilien, Duncan Kh Fong Dec 2006

Mapping The Bounds Of Incoherence: How Far Can You Go And How Does It Affect Your Brand?, Ujwal Kayande, John H. Roberts, Gary L. Lilien, Duncan Kh Fong

Ujwal Kayande

Consumers often have to evaluate products comprising a combination of attributes that is not expected by them, given their beliefs about how attributes normally co-vary in the product category. Such an attribute combination implies that the claimed level of a product attribute is then different from what the consumer might infer, given the level of another attribute, resulting in what we call product incoherence. We develop a model to calibrate the effect of incoherence on perceptions, uncertainty, preference, and ultimately purchase. Our model can allow managers to determine consumers’ acceptance for different positions in the multiattribute space, so they can …

Intangible Economy: How Can Investors Deliver Change In Business?, Maria May Seitanidi Dec 2006

Intangible Economy: How Can Investors Deliver Change In Business?, Maria May Seitanidi

Maria May Seitanidi

Investors traditionally prioritised tangible outcomes (money, land, machinery) in order to protect their financial assets. However, the intangible economy (trust, human resources, information, reputation) that co-exists draws attention to new expectations that request the continuous, active and within the public sphere involvement of investors in order to protect their assets by prioritising intangible resources. The paper argues that investors in intangible outcomes who aim to achieve change in corporations share the same limitations within the financial and non-financial field. The case of Nonprofit-Business Partnerships is employed in order to demonstrate how change can be achieved. The role of investors is …

Expert Capital And Perceived Legitimacy: Female-Run Entrepreneurial Venture Signaling And Performance., Patrick J. Murphy, J. Kickul, S. D. Barbosa, L. Titus Dec 2006

Expert Capital And Perceived Legitimacy: Female-Run Entrepreneurial Venture Signaling And Performance., Patrick J. Murphy, J. Kickul, S. D. Barbosa, L. Titus

Patrick J. Murphy

Research has shown that female entrepreneurs face unique barriers to entrepreneurial success, such as procuring funding and being perceived as credible. Limited past theory has addressed how these challenges can be met effectively by female-run entrepreneurial ventures. As a result, effective strategies for female entrepreneurs to overcome them are unclear. To address the need for research in this area, the authors use signalling theory to guide an empirical study utilizing panel study data based on 711 entrepreneurial ventures (334 female-run; 377 male-run). Signals perceived by outsiders pertaining to the risk preference, legitimacy and social capital of female-run ventures are examined …

Organisational Culture Of Customer Care: Market Orientation And Service Quality, Kenneth W. Green, Subrata Chakrabarty, Dwayne Whitten Dec 2006

Organisational Culture Of Customer Care: Market Orientation And Service Quality, Kenneth W. Green, Subrata Chakrabarty, Dwayne Whitten

Subrata Chakrabarty

The purpose of this study is to assess the proposition that adoption of a market orientation leads to improved service quality for service sector organisations. We argue that an organisational culture incorporating customer care as its central tenet and involving efforts to understand the needs of customers through a market orientation enables the organisation to provide quality services that satisfy the identified customer needs. Data were collected from 15 service providers using the MORTN scale to measure market orientation and the SERVPERF scale to measure service quality. The results support the theorised positive link between market orientation and service quality.  …

What Lessons Can We Learn From Babe, A Sheep-Pig,, Janet G. Sayers, Lara Ruffolo

Janet G Sayers

This paper provides an example of a movie that can provide lessons on successful intercultural communication. Babe provides us with a rich resource for the examination of the process of change and its pitfalls too. In addition we can see a great deal about what we would wish intercultural contact to mean for our communities, and this can provide a provocative and useful start to a discussion about intercultural issues and the development of intercultural skills. We hope that our reading of the movie presented here provides a platform for discussion and debate, not necessarily about the movie (this is …

Controlled Language: The Next Big Thing In Translation?, Uwe Muegge Dec 2006

Controlled Language: The Next Big Thing In Translation?, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Many global organizations are beginning to see the productivity indicators for their translation and localization processes reach a plateau. That’s an inevitable fact even for those organizations that use what’s currently billed as the latest and greatest in translation technology, such as translation memory with automated workflow components or globalization management systems. Even with these tools in place, making content available in multiple languages remains a very expensive and time-consuming proposition. For those looking for ways to reduce the cost of translation to the point where almost all materials that should be translation actually can be translated, controlled language may …

Calling The End Of The Bubble: Are There Trends In Order Imbalances, Julia Henker, Thomas Henker Dec 2006

Calling The End Of The Bubble: Are There Trends In Order Imbalances, Julia Henker, Thomas Henker

Thomas Henker

Extract:
Can traders effectively conceal their information processing from the rest of the market, or is it there for the alert investor to observe? Could we see, for example, the reduction in demand that leads to the crash of a stock price bubble, or can investors keep their sentiment private?

We might expect that if we look carefully at buy and sell orders over several days, we could forecast the change from an upward to a downward trend in asset prices, but we would be wrong.

In this article, we investigate whether stock price bubble crashes are foreshadowed in order …

Towards Web Services Oriented Unified Supervisory Hci, Djilali Idoughi, Christophe Kolski Dec 2006

Towards Web Services Oriented Unified Supervisory Hci, Djilali Idoughi, Christophe Kolski

Professor Djilali IDOUGHI

A lot of work & research has been done in HCI supervision-type industrial context, but mostly relative to control rooms and local supervision. However, many multi-site or extended and complex organisations are faced with some new challenges and trends such as supervisory systems integration and unified access of the different actors which have not been much considered so far. A service oriented solution is outlined and explained in the context of industrial supervision oriented towards to a unified and integrated supervisory HCI design. A representative supervisory scenario taken from a real case study which illustrates the approach is then described.

Mixed Method Research: Phoenix Of The Paradigm Wars, Roslyn Cameron, Peter Miller Dec 2006

Mixed Method Research: Phoenix Of The Paradigm Wars, Roslyn Cameron, Peter Miller

Peter Miller

A new era in research methods is emerging and has been quietly lauded by several emerging authorities in the field of mixed methods research. The paradigm wars of the 1980s have been replaced by a ‘paradigmatic soup’ (Buchanan & Bryman 2007) and multimethodolgy or methodological pluralism has become a dominant part of the research landscape. Like the mythology of the phoenix, mixed methods research has arisen out of the ashes of the paradigm wars to become the third methodological movement. The fields of applied social science and evaluation are among those which have shown the greatest popularity and uptake of …

A Review Of The Critical Perspective On Human Resource Management, Carol Gill Dec 2006

A Review Of The Critical Perspective On Human Resource Management, Carol Gill

Carol Gill

The Critical Perspective on Human Resource Management argues that HRM has inherent contradictions derived from its foundation in two different US models that lead to a gap between rhetoric and reality. The gap is interpreted in two ways. Firstly, the Critical Perspective proposes that HRM has only been implemented in rhetoric making it ineffectual. Secondly it proposes that HRM is manipulative and uses soft rhetoric to disguise and gain employee commitment to a hard reality characterized by work intensification and job insecurity. Critiques of the Critical Perspective propose that HRM cannot be both ineffective and manipulative and that the Critical …
