Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 2007, Central Bank Of Nigeria Dec 2007

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 2007, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Annual Report

In 2007, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) faced significant challenges in monetary management due to statutory allocations to government tiers, autonomous foreign exchange inflows, and pre-election spending. These challenges were addressed through Open Market Operations (OMO), issuance of treasury securities, standing facilities, and foreign exchange swaps. The introduction of the monetary policy rate (MPR) in December 2006 moderated inter-bank rates, encouraged trading, and improved the transmission of monetary policy actions. The Bank intensified its non-regular management activities to ensure the Policy Support Instrument (PSI) target was met. The financial system at end-2007 comprised the CBN, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance …

American Index Put Options Early Exercise Premium Estimation, Ako Doffou Dec 2007

American Index Put Options Early Exercise Premium Estimation, Ako Doffou

WCBT Faculty Publications

"This paper examines empirically the value of early exercise by testing the ability of two American put valuation models to predict the early exercise premium for the S&P 100 American put options. An accuracy test and a quality test are performed on (1) the MacMillan (1986) & Barone-Adesi and Whaley (1987) model, and (2) the Carr, Jarrow and Myneni(1992) model. The test results show that early exercise premium is significant regardless of moneyness. Moreover, consistent with the theory, the value of early exercise is significantly negatively related to moneyness and interest rates and significantly positively related to time to maturity …

Implied Measures Of Relative Fund Performance, Steve Hogan, Mitch Warachka Dec 2007

Implied Measures Of Relative Fund Performance, Steve Hogan, Mitch Warachka

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We evaluate the relative performance of funds by conditioning their returns on the cross-section of portfolio characteristics across fund managers. Our implied procedure circumvents the need to specify benchmark returns or peer funds. Instead, fund-specific benchmarks for measuring selection and market timing ability are constructed. This technique is robust to herding as well as window dressing and mitigates survivorship bias. Empirically, the conditional information contained in portfolio weights defined by industry sectors, assets, and geographical regions is important to the assessment of fund management. For each set of portfolio characteristics, we identify funds with success at either selecting securities or …

A historical perspective lens may be useful to help people understand the world of accounting and accounting research. Some believe that the role that accounting plays in current society could be better understood by reviewing its historical association with the institutionalization development within which it operates. Accounting as it is practiced in capitalist system has been predominately viewed as a technical and context-free activity. However, if a meta-level concern addressing broad structural and institutional environment from which accounting emanated is absent, there must be doubt that the conventional accounting can claim to be comprehensible and to contain true information. This …

Intraday Pattern And The Speed Of Adjustment In The Jakarta Stock Exchange, Zaafri Husodo, Thomas Henker Dec 2007

Intraday Pattern And The Speed Of Adjustment In The Jakarta Stock Exchange, Zaafri Husodo, Thomas Henker

Thomas Henker

High frequency study at individual level in the Jakarta Stock Exchange is conducted in this research to reveal the dynamics at intraday level. Several apparent patterns emerge from analyzing the relation among the speed of adjustment coefficients, noise, and noise variance. It is found that the noise and noise variance are at a low level when the speed of adjustment coefficients achieves a fair level. The speed of adjustment coefficients, both at market and individual level show a periodic adjustment pattern at a daily interval. This justifies the importance of studying the dynamics of the price discovery as estimated in …

Monopoly Or Competition: Standard Setting In The Private And Public Sector, Shyam Sunder, Karim Jamal Dec 2007

Monopoly Or Competition: Standard Setting In The Private And Public Sector, Shyam Sunder, Karim Jamal

Shyam Sunder

Financial accounting standards in the U.S. are developed by private standard setting organizations (SSOs) that operate under the oversight of a government agency. The primary accounting SSO (FASB) has been criticized for writing too many standards (standards overload), the complexity of its standards, the processes by which its standards are set, and the absence of a competitive mechanism to help set standards. The present study seeks to assess the validity of these concerns by looking at standard setting processes in the broader economy. The study consists of three parts. In Section 1, we present some historical data on standard setting …

The Consumer Choice Of E-Channels As A Purchasing Avenue: An Investigation Of The Communicative Aspects Of Information Qualtiy , Jaejoo Lim Dec 2007

The Consumer Choice Of E-Channels As A Purchasing Avenue: An Investigation Of The Communicative Aspects Of Information Qualtiy , Jaejoo Lim

All Dissertations

A conspicuous paradox is evident in the statistics concerning purchases over the internet. While a majority of the US population uses the internet to seek product information for purchasing decisions, less than two percent of actual retail sales occur on the Internet. To explain this small ratio of e-channel choice for purchase, a comprehensive model that extends DeLone and McLean's (2004) e-commerce success model was developed. The model centers on the importance of perceived information quality and its relationship to e-channel choice as a purchasing channel. Using the overarching theoretical frame of motivation, two questions were examined: (a) what influences …

Leaders Can Learn To Change; Some Do: A Qualitative Study, George K. Kriflik, R. Jones Dec 2007

Leaders Can Learn To Change; Some Do: A Qualitative Study, George K. Kriflik, R. Jones

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The behaviour of organisational subordinates is significantly affected by the attitudes and actions of their supervisor. By changing themselves, leaders can therefore have a crucial impact not only on the behaviour of their subordinates but also on the extent to which those subordinates perceive that they are achieving their organisational potential. This paper presents a conceptual model of the process through which organisational leaders can attempt to change themselves with the objective of changing the behaviour of their subordinates. Using a grounded methodology, data has been collected and analysed from a large Australian public sector bureaucracy by means of participant …

Constructive Enabling: Applying A Wilderness Skills Intervention To Support The Therapeutic Change Process Of Adolescent Females In Residential Treatment, Brian K. Malcarne

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the potential benefits of a primitive wilderness skills intervention (POST) on the therapeutic change process of adolescent females enrolled in a residential treatment center. A qualitative data analysis approach was used. A convenience sample of eight female adolescents was selected by therapist referral. The data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Data analysis was used to assess participants' progress in the therapeutic change. Further analysis revealed a core theme connecting participants' POST experience with feelings of self-empowerment and reflective connections to their individual therapeutic change process. Constructive enabling was the …

Family Leisure Involvement And Family Functioning In Samoa, Irene Dora Annandale Fotu

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to (a) examine the relationship between family leisure involvement and aspects of family functioning (adaptability and cohesion) among Samoan families residing on American Samoa, and (b) to compare the Samoan data to a broad sample of American families to provide a cross-cultural comparison. The sample consisted of 340 adult participants. The Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP) was used to measure family leisure involvement. FACES II was used to measure family functioning. Regression analyses conducted on the 340 individuals indicated a positive relationship between core family leisure involvement and family cohesion, adaptability, and overall family …

Analysis Of Pricing And Reserving Risks With Applications In Risk-Based Capital Regulation For Property/Casualty Insurance Companies, Chayanin Kerdpholngarm Dec 2007

Analysis Of Pricing And Reserving Risks With Applications In Risk-Based Capital Regulation For Property/Casualty Insurance Companies, Chayanin Kerdpholngarm

Risk Management and Insurance Dissertations

The subject of the study for this dissertation is the relationship between pricing and reserving risks for property-casualty insurance companies. Since the risk characteristics of insurers differ based on their structure, objectives and incentives, segmenting the insurers into subgroups would allow for a better understanding of group-specific risks. Based on this approach to analyzing insurer financial risks, we find that, in a given accident year, the pricing and reserving errors are positively correlated, especially in long-tailed lines of business. Large insurers, stock insurers, and multi-state insurers, in general, exhibit a strong correlation between accident-year price and reserve errors. However, only …

Palestinian Health Institutions: Finding A Way Forward In The Wake Of The Second Intifada, Peter E. Hilsenrath, Karan P. Singh

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

The strength of Hamas in Palestinian elections in early 2006 reshuffled the cards in the game of Middle East politics. Many astonished observers have sought an explanation for this political change. But the election result should not have been so surprising. Hamas has earned a reputation of clean governance and compassion for the poor, unlike the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority. Hamas has had a strong presence in the health sector which helped establish its legitimacy and popularity. This paper reviews bilateral and multilateral aid to Palestinians following the second intifada and argues that not enough was done by the international community …

Improving Practices In A Small Software Firm: An Ambidextrous Perspective, Nannette Napier Dec 2007

Improving Practices In A Small Software Firm: An Ambidextrous Perspective, Nannette Napier

Computer Information Systems Dissertations

Despite documented best practices and specialized tools, software organizations struggle to deliver quality software that is on time, within budget, and meets customer requirements. Managers seeking improved software project outcomes face two dominant software paradigms which differ in their emphasis on upfront planning, customer collaboration, and product documentation: plan-driven and agile. Rather than promoting one approach over the other, this research advocates improving software management practices by developing the organization’s ambidextrous capability. Ambidextrous organizations have the ability to simultaneously succeed at two seemingly contradictory capabilities (e.g. discipline and agility) which leads to enhanced organizational performance. Overall, this study asks the …

Information And Computer Technology Security: Furthering The Research Agenda, Karin Garrety, M Barrett Dec 2007

Information And Computer Technology Security: Furthering The Research Agenda, Karin Garrety, M Barrett

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Despite the development of advanced technical devices and procedures, the information held in computer systems remains vulnerable to attack and/or inadvertent mishandling, resulting in security breaches. Increasingly, researchers and practitioners are recognising that information security is not merely a technical issue, but is heavily influenced by social and cultural factors. This paper argues that post-cognitivist approaches to human computer interaction, which focus on situated reasoning and the contextual, relational aspects of computer-mediated activities and interactions, provide a promising set of concepts with which to explore non-technical users’ everyday security practices and beliefs. We review the limited research that has been …

Student-Centred Teaching Of Accounting To Engineering Students: Comparing Blended Learning And Traditional Approaches, A. Abraham Dec 2007

Student-Centred Teaching Of Accounting To Engineering Students: Comparing Blended Learning And Traditional Approaches, A. Abraham

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Blended learning is growing in popularity, but there is conflicting empirical evidence in relation to how it affects students’ exam marks and final grades. This paper compares a blended learning approach to the traditional delivery of an accounting subject to engineering students. Data was collected from two cohorts of students over two semesters and analysed to determine whether the students who were exposed to the blended environment displayed increased participation in a non-compulsory learning task and higher marks in both in-session and final examinations. Results indicated significant improvements in every area, supplying valuable evidence that the adoption of a blended …

Cities Of Innovation: Exploring The Role Of Local Community Organisations In ‘Constructing Advantage’, Samuel E. Garrett-Jones, Michael Gross, Gregory Kerr, S. Kotevski, S. Zaeemdar Dec 2007

Cities Of Innovation: Exploring The Role Of Local Community Organisations In ‘Constructing Advantage’, Samuel E. Garrett-Jones, Michael Gross, Gregory Kerr, S. Kotevski, S. Zaeemdar

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Cities and regions around the world are attempting to ‘construct advantage’ by intervening to create knowledge- and innovation-based economic and social development. This paper considers the rationale for such intervention and in particular reviews the concept of ‘community innovation organisations’ by exploring their definition, origins, and purpose. It develops a classification of local innovation actors and their functions. We argue that the contribution of community based organisations to local innovation-based economic and social development has been largely overlooked in Australia by comparison with studies and initiatives in Europe and North America. We propose a programme of empirical research to assess …

Bad News Reporting On Troubled It Projects: The Role Of Personal, Situational, And Organizational Factors, Chongwoo Park Dec 2007

Bad News Reporting On Troubled It Projects: The Role Of Personal, Situational, And Organizational Factors, Chongwoo Park

Computer Information Systems Dissertations

An individual’s bad news reporting behavior has been studied from a number of perspectives and has resulted in a variety of research streams including the MUM effect (or reluctance to transmit bad news), whistle-blowing, and organizational silence. While many scholars in different areas have studied reporting behavior, it has not been widely discussed in the information systems literature. This dissertation research addresses an individual’s bad news reporting behavior (and its antecedents) in the troubled IT project context. Many social phenomena are multi-causal (Hollander 1971). The silence phenomenon involved in an individual’s bad news reporting behavior is multi-causal too. While prior …

Escalation Of Commitment In Information Technology Projects: A Goal Setting Theory Perspective, Vijay Kasi Dec 2007

Escalation Of Commitment In Information Technology Projects: A Goal Setting Theory Perspective, Vijay Kasi

Computer Information Systems Dissertations

ABSTRACT ESCALATION OF COMMITMENT IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS: A GOAL SETTING THEORY PERSPECTIVE BY VIJAY KASI Aug 30, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Mark Keil Major Academic Unit: Center for Process Innovation Information technology (IT) projects are prone to failure. One explanation for the high failure rate among IT projects is that managers overly commit to a failing course of action, a phenomenon referred as escalation of commitment. While the notion of goals and commitment are central to the phenomenon of escalation, very few prior studies have investigated their impact on escalation. In this study, a research model rooted in goal …

Adr Characteristics And Performance In International And Global Indexes, Arindam Bandopadhyaya, Lal Chugh, James L. Grant Dec 2007

Adr Characteristics And Performance In International And Global Indexes, Arindam Bandopadhyaya, Lal Chugh, James L. Grant

Financial Services Forum Publications

This study looks at the characteristics and performance of ADRs in international and global indexes. We find that ADRs in EAFE are tilted toward three common factors: giant cap, high dividend yield, and U.K. stocks. In terms of risk-adjusted performance, we find that ADRs provide inefficient diversification for US investors, as tradeoffs of return and risk are better with portfolio combinations of the S&P500 and the S&P Global 700, as compared with portfolio combinations of the S&P500 and an ADR breakout of the Global 700. Our findings on ADR characteristics are consistent with prior research, while our performance findings are …
