Placing Peer Ratings In Context: Systematic Influences Beyond Ratee Performance, Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface Dec 2006

Placing Peer Ratings In Context: Systematic Influences Beyond Ratee Performance, Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface

Erich C. Dierdorff

Performance evaluation research indicates that variance in ratings may be attributable to systematic sources beyond the actual performance of the ratee. However, the majority of prior work compares ratings across sources and uses ratings from a single rating event. Using confirmatory factor analysis and multivariate latent growth modeling (MLGM), we specifically examine peer ratings from 740 participants on 5 performance dimensions across 3 distinct performance situations for systematic sources of variance beyond ratee performance. Results demonstrate that both ratee performance and the performance context have systematic effects, with contextual effects varying by how “strong” or “weak” the situation is for …

How Generic Are Project Management Knowledge And Practice?, Lynn Crawford, Julien Pollack

Lynn Crawford

At the heart of managing projects is a complex paradox: Projects are widely considered unique endeavors, yet the effort to implement a project usually involves using a generic set of standardized practices. This article examines the complexity involved in relying on standardized practices to manage projects, focusing on conflict of using generalized processes to realize unique endeavors. In doing so, it identifies three types of standards and overviews the literature on the benefits and the problems involved in standardizing project management practices and in implementing these practices to manage projects. It then outlines the responses to a survey that the …

Communication And Conflict, Mara Olekalns, Linda Putnam, Laurie Weingart Dec 2006

Communication And Conflict, Mara Olekalns, Linda Putnam, Laurie Weingart

Mara Olekalns

Communication is central to the experience and management of conflict. It is through communication that people express their desires, realize differences, and attempt to resolve those differences. While there is a rich tradition of research on conflict in organizational settings, the focus on the role communication is more recent. In 1987, Putnam and Poole wrote one of the first reviews of this literature, noting that “communication constitutes the essence of conflict in that it undergirds the formation of opposing issues, frames perceptions of the felt conflict, translates emotions and perceptions into conflict behaviors, and sets the stage for future conflicts” …

RFID, radio frequency identification, can help companies improve their supply chain operations and facilitate compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The key is in the implementation. And the key to implementation lies in the integration of the company's enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.

The Impact Of Bank Venture Capital On Initial Public Offerings, Steven Dolvin, Donald Mullineaux, Mark Pyles Dec 2006

The Impact Of Bank Venture Capital On Initial Public Offerings, Steven Dolvin, Donald Mullineaux, Mark Pyles

Steven D. Dolvin

Studies of the role of venture capital in the IPO process generally assume that all venture capitalists are alike. We relax this assumption and focus on the role of venture capitalists affiliated with either commercial or investment banks. We find that firms backed by these bank venture capitalists experience a lower opportunity cost of going public. This result holds mainly for small issuers, suggesting that banks are superior to traditional venture capitalists in providing certification services to this segment of the market. We also find that bank venture capital-backed firms experience a less negative abnormal return at lockup expiration, which …

The Relational Foundations Of Strategic Choice In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith Dec 2006

The Relational Foundations Of Strategic Choice In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith

Mara Olekalns

Representing negotiations as social exchanges highlights negotiators’ implicit obligations to honor exchanges and the risk that they will fail to do so. Based on their representation of the underlying relationship, negotiators are oriented to one of four relational risks (failures in reliability, predictability, benevolence or integrity). The salience of a specific relational risk shifts negotiators’ strategic focus and elicits a distinct strategic cluster (deterrence, co-ordination, obligation, collaboration) aimed at offsetting or neutralizing these relational risks.

Competition and entrepreneurship are driving forces in the development of economic systems. They create jobs, new opportunities to generate value, and lead to the fulfillment of personal career and life goals. As such, it is important to understand the basic economic and cultural factors that influence these activities in developing economies. We undertook a series of analyses in an examination of a heterogeneous sample of economic zones in Southeast Asia. Results illustrate relations between national culture, human development, and business and growth competitiveness. Implications hold that human development and power distance are enablers of entrepreneurial activities in these cultural and …

Do Business School Professors Make Good Executive Managers?, B. Jiang, Patrick Murphy Dec 2006

Do Business School Professors Make Good Executive Managers?, B. Jiang, Patrick Murphy

Patrick J. Murphy

Despite suggestions that business school professors do not understand what actually accounts for the performance of business organizations, the evidence is anecdotal at best. We review past work, develop expectations, and provide large-scale evidence for examining the validity of such suggestions. We accessed extensive data provided by Dun & Bradstreet and procured detailed information from 765 leading public and private North American businesses. Analysis of 215 closely matched pairs showed that companies with former business school professors as executives generated significantly greater revenues per employee than counterparts with non-former professors as executives. Companies with former professors in vice-president positions had …

Paul, J., Hariharan, G. (2007). Hospital Capacity Planning For Effective Disaster Mitigation During A Bioterrorist Attack., Jomon Aliyas Paul, Govind Hariharan

Jomon Aliyas Paul

Effective hospital capacity planning can not only significantly enhance the capability and effectiveness of the treatment provided to patients during a bioterrorist attack but can also provide critical information. While a lot of work has been done to model hospital capacity estimates for natural disasters the same cannot be said for manmade biological disasters like anthrax or smallpox. In this paper, we develop a generic simulation model of hospital capacity planning during a bioterrorist attack. We model both cases in which the occurrence of the attack and the type of agent used are known as well as when they are …

For individuals, job opportunities in project management and increasing demand by business for evidence of project management competence fuels concern for professional development in the interests of employability, career development and job satisfaction. If The Shoe Fits: Wenzhou Aike Shoes Company, Ltd., B. Jiang, Patrick Murphy

Patrick J. Murphy

This case study addresses critical aspects of the strategic management decision to be made by Wenzhou Aike Shoes Company, Ltd., a Chinese multinational shoe manufacturer. The specific focus is on Aike’s operations in Elche, Spain. Over a period of several years, upheaval stemming from a multitude of Chinese new entrants to Elche’s revered shoemaking industry reached a flashpoint. The Chinese new entrants run operations significantly differently than the local Elche businesses in terms of daily practices, production, imitation, price competition, and supply chain management. All of these aspects derive from deep cultural differences and are highlighted in the case. Several …

Conflicting Social Motives In Negotiating Groups, Laurie Weingart, Jeanne Brett, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith Dec 2006

Conflicting Social Motives In Negotiating Groups, Laurie Weingart, Jeanne Brett, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith

Mara Olekalns

Negotiators’ social motives (cooperative versus individualistic) influence their strategic behaviors. This study used multi-level modeling and analyses of strategy sequences to test hypotheses regarding how negotiators’ social motives and the composition of the group influence group members’ negotiation strategies. Four-person groups negotiating a 5 issue mixed-motive decision making task were videotaped, transcribed, and coded. Group composition included two homogeneous conditions (all cooperators and all individualists) and three heterogeneous conditions (3 cooperators/1 individualist; 2 cooperators/2 individualists; 1 cooperator/3 individualists). Results showed that cooperative negotiators adjusted their use of integrative and distributive strategies in response to the social motive composition of the …
