Delineating The ‘‘Ease Of Doing Business’’ Construct Within The Supplier–Customer Interface, Gary Stading, Nezih Altay
Delineating The ‘‘Ease Of Doing Business’’ Construct Within The Supplier–Customer Interface, Gary Stading, Nezih Altay
Nezih Altay
The current research provides insight into the ‘‘ease of doing business’’ construct. Factor analysis of survey responses of supply managers in the electronics industry was used to test the proposed ‘‘ease of doing business’’ construct, which includes the three dimensions — information and material services, financial contract services and personal relations services. Results support a link between a customer’s assessment of a supplier’s ‘‘ease of doing business’’ and the amount of business conducted with that supplier. The attributes supported by this research provide the means for managers to improve and grow business with customers.

Blink And They're Gone: A "Quick-Take" On Impulse Purchase Behavior And Enrollment Marketing In Higher Education, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Vahn Knight
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
The college-decision process that prospective students make has been characterized as deliberate and prolonged -- a classic extensive problem solving behavior model. New research indicates that a significant proportion of students engage in impluse purchase behavior when choosing a college. Marketing implications for enrollment management and "Blink An Intervention Model" are presented

The labour productivity impact of innovation is investigated in this paper combining neo-Schumpeterian insights on the variety of innovation with the importance of industrial structures and firm size; two models are proposed for explaining productivity and export success in European manufacturing industries and firm-size classes. The empirical estimates are based on data from the European innovation survey (CIS 2), covering Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK, broken down by 22 sectors and for large, medium, and small firms. The econometric results, obtained adopting cross-sectional estimation methodologies able to account for unobserved industrial characteristics, show that productivity in Europe …

Demand And Innovation In European Industries, Mario Pianta, Francesco Crespi

After the decade-old debate between demand-pull and technology-push perspectives, demand seems to have fallen out of fashion. In this paper two models are proposed on the determinants of general innovative activities and on the market impact of product innovations. The models combine the supply and demand engines of innovation, and qualify the type of innovative efforts, distinguishing between those oriented towards cost reductions or towards technological competitiveness. The models are tested at the industry level for 22 manufacturing sectors and 17 services sectors in six European countries. The results show that efforts at technological competitiveness, product oriented strategies and the …
Commercio Con L'Estero E Tecnologia In Italia Negli Anni Cinquanta E Sessanta, Mario Pianta, Matteo Gamellini
Commercio Con L'Estero E Tecnologia In Italia Negli Anni Cinquanta E Sessanta, Mario Pianta, Matteo Gamellini
Mario Pianta

Exposure To The Field And The Meanings Managers Hold: Evidence From Manufacturing Best Practices Programs, Peter Cebon, E. Geoffrey Love
Exposure To The Field And The Meanings Managers Hold: Evidence From Manufacturing Best Practices Programs, Peter Cebon, E. Geoffrey Love
Peter Cebon
A central proposition of neo-institutional theory is that exposure to institutional fields shapes the meanings actors within the field hold. We test that proposition by asking whether variations in exposure to field-level processes will lead to variations in meanings held by actors. To do so, we examine the implementation of a managerial practice – Manufacturing Best Practices Programs – across a large sample of manufacturing sites in Australia and New Zealand. We assess exposure to field-level processes both indirectly (through structural characteristics such as site size and technological sophistication), and directly (as contact with theorizing agents and communities of practice). …
Some Comparisons Among Quadratic, Spherical, And Logarithmic Scoring Rules, Eric Bickel
Some Comparisons Among Quadratic, Spherical, And Logarithmic Scoring Rules, Eric Bickel
Eric Bickel
Strictly proper scoring rules continue to play an important role in probability assessment. Although many such rules have been developed, relatively little guidance exists as to which rule is the most appropriate. In this paper, we discuss two important properties of quadratic, spherical, and logarithmic scoring rules. From an ex post perspective, we compare their rank order properties and conclude that both quadratic and spherical scoring perform poorly in this regard, relative to logarithmic. Second, from an ex ante perspective, we demonstrate that in many situations, logarithmic scoring is the method least affected by a nonlinear utility function. These results …

Technological Iatrogenesis: New Risks Force Heightened Management Awareness, Patrick Albert Palmieri
Patrick Albert Palmieri
Iatrogenesis is a term typically reserved to express the state of ill health or the adverse outcome resulting from a medical intervention, or lack thereof. Three types of iatrogenesis are described in the literature: clinical, social and cultural. This paper introduces a fourth type, technological iatrogenesis, or emerging errors stimulated by the infusion of technological innovations into complex healthcare systems. While health information technologies (HIT) have helped to make healthcare safer, this has also produced contemporary varieties of iatrogenic errors and events. The potential pitfalls of technological innovations and risk management solutions to address these concerns are discussed. Specifically, failure …

Statements which, by reason of their form and circumstances, give the persons to whom they are addressed the impression that they are official positions taken by the State, not personal opinions of the official, are attributable to the State. The decisive factor for the statements of an official to be attributed to the State is whether the persons to whom those statements are addressed can reasonably suppose, in the given context, that they are positions taken by the official with the authority of his office.
To the extent that they are attributable to the State, statements by an official describing …

It is important that claims on foods can be understood by the consumer and it is appropriate to protect all consumers from misleading claims. However, since the enactment of Council Directive 84/450/EEC of 10 September 1984 concerning misleading and comparative advertising, the Court of Justice of the European Communities has found it necessary in adjudicating on advertising cases to examine the effect on a notional, typical consumer. In line with the principle of proportionality, and to enable the effective application of the protective measures contained in it, this Regulation takes as a benchmark the average consumer, who is reasonably well-informed …

Disease Epidemics And Entrepreneurial Tipping Points: Models Of Venture Viability From Customer And Financier Perspectives., Patrick J. Murphy, T. Long

Whereas discovery is fundamental to entrepreneurship, there is low understanding of how and why some discovered opportunities spread through market systems. We draw from epidemiological theories of how contagious viruses spread through human populations and propose adaptations of epidemic principles to describe venture spread patterns. We profile venture ideas via epidemiological dimensions (contact rate, market size, adoption rate, useful life). Next, we cross-reference those dimensions to entrepreneurial and financier orientation dimensions. Implications are relevant to the strategic decisions of entrepreneurs and investment decisions of financiers.
