Americanizing The American Woman: Symbols Of Nationalism In The Ladies Home Journal, 1890-1900, Kaithlyn Kayer
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
When the Ladies’ Home Journal began in 1883, its creator, Mr. Cyrus H. K. Curtis, could not have possibly dreamed that the magazine would grow to be the most influential woman’s journal of all time. A material culture analysis of American nationalistic emblems published in the Ladies’ Home Journal between 1890 and 1900 will determine how Edward Bok, editor, controlled nationalism in the feminine market, displaying the openness of women to nationalism in the late 19th century. It will also reveal how Bok created and controlled an educational tool he deemed “Americanization”, establishing a technique that magazines would replicate in …

Achieving Sustainable Designs Within Master Planned Communities, Ned Wales, Elspeth Mead
Achieving Sustainable Designs Within Master Planned Communities, Ned Wales, Elspeth Mead
Ned Wales
Under rapid technological advancement within the urban development industry, fuelled by booming economic conditions, a fertile environment is flourishing for the uptake of sustainable development practices. However, this gives rise to the question: Then, why is there a considerable lag in the implementation of sustainable practices aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and human waste? This paper expands on initial findings of localised research into the adoption of ecological sustainable development practices within the land development industry. Through this research and further investigation a number of issues are exposed; the lack of regulatory direction, training of industry players and a …
Suburban Adaptability: Urban Context, Joshua Seidner
Suburban Adaptability: Urban Context, Joshua Seidner
Architecture Senior Theses
The urban environment historically fosters anonymity among urbanites denying individual expression, user flexibility, and family adaptability. The result is the draw to the suburban house model which inherently concedes ones' expression of individual identity. The urban landscape has historically formed with the core and periphery. Over the last sixty years the periphery has harbored the creation of suburbia. Traditionally, the urban landscape has, and continues to suppress individualism and flexibility to create uniformity and homogeneity[...] Arguably by default, suburbia creates a basic template which the end-user can customize. On the contrary, the urban environment does not foster the ability to …
Architecture For The Lost Place, Jeremy Shipp
Architecture For The Lost Place, Jeremy Shipp
Masters Theses
This thesis investigates how architectural production can deal with the history in a place. It describes how the idea of genius loci can define a place’s existence and how architecture can respond to a site that is disconnected from its history by a sudden loss of that which once defined it. I consider a place which has been physically transformed and whose population has been removed. These conditions invite a program to elucidate the site’s past, and architecture to interpret a state of absence. The project responds to the site’s history without pretending to manifest the historical place.

Student Preferences For Career Mentoring In Property And Construction, Liz Everist, Valerie Francis, Lynne Armitage
Lynne Armitage
Although career mentoring is well established across many professional areas, its application in the field of property and construction is at an emergent stage. As part of ongoing quality review aimed at enhancing student engagement with their educational program, a survey was undertaken among first and second year students enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning's Bachelor of Planning and Design (Property and Construction). The study investigated student preferences regarding involvement in a career mentoring program including mentoring program options and mentoring style preferences. Several differences emerged between property and construction student cohorts and in particular between male …
Cultural Identity In Landscape Architecture, Renovation Of Managua's Lakeside, Julio Alvarez
Cultural Identity In Landscape Architecture, Renovation Of Managua's Lakeside, Julio Alvarez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines a design approach in landscape architecture in which cultural and historical values are reinterpreted in a contemporary urban environment. The site of this project is located in Managua's lakeside area, which was destroyed by hurricane Mitch in 1998. The lakeside area has been an attraction to Managua's residents because of its beautiful views and fresh breezes.
The majority of Nicaragua's population is of indigenous descent; however, Managua's urban environment is predominantly of European influence. The pre-Columbian heritage of Nicaraguans is hidden in their cultural expressions, such as the names of places and religious rituals.
This project provides …

CLIENT: UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD, OMAHA.
This rail-freight giant consolidated nine locations at a 1.3 million-square-foot headquarters. Images of locomotives and boxcars add a dose of excitement for train buffs.
HARNESSING THE RAW POWER OF THE DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE and translating it into a design concept, the Union Pacific Railroad’s new headquarters in downtown Omaha alludes to the history and present of this freight giant in ways both large and small. Principal Bill Hartman designed the 1.3 million-square-foot building to make architectural reference to rail travel. Note, for instance, how the rows of interior office windows offer glimpses into private …

Translating Research Into Homelessness Policy And Practice: One Perspective From The United States, Dennis P. Culhane
Translating Research Into Homelessness Policy And Practice: One Perspective From The United States, Dennis P. Culhane
Dennis P. Culhane
Like social scientists everywhere, homelessness researchers in the US are usually ignored. Good science that identifies what causes homelessness, sound evaluations which document that certain programs will never work, and even evidence that promising solutions deserve broad replication, are often disregarded. Such wanton indifference for science would constitute malpractice in the field of medicine, but it sometimes passes as acceptable policy in the field of social welfare. Ideology, politics and preservation of the status quo usually prevail. So, what’s a well intentioned researcher to do? Persevere and become more tactical. After all, policy failures can’t be ignored forever. Like good …

Architectural Lessons Of Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761): Indole Of Material And Of Self, Marc J. Neveu
Architectural Lessons Of Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761): Indole Of Material And Of Self, Marc J. Neveu
Architecture
Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761) exists as a footnote in most major history books of modern architecture. He is typically noted for either his influence on the Venetian Neoclassical tradition or as an early prophet to some sort of functionalism. Though I would not argue his influence, I doubt his role in the development of a structurally determined functionalism. The issue of influence is always present as very little of his writings have survived and his built work amounts to a few windowsills. He did, however, teach architecture. I propose to explore the pedagogic potential of Lodoli’s lessons of architecture.
Lodoli’s teaching …

Beyond Brasilia - Contemporary Urban Design In Brazil, Vicente Del Rio
Beyond Brasilia - Contemporary Urban Design In Brazil, Vicente Del Rio
City and Regional Planning
This paper is a brief discussion of a recent research on how Brazilian cities have been shaped from the late 1980s to the early 2000s through several case studies in different cities. After the disruption of the modernist paradigm, the demythification of Brasilia, and the redemocratization of the country in the 1980s, architecture and urbanism in Brazil were eager for new models with which to face urban development. On one side globalization and market forces dragged society towards an “entrepreneurial” and fragmented city of shopping centers, gated communities, private enclaves, and trendy and irrelevant architectural imagery. On the other side …

Boundaries And Thresholds, Kathleen C. Czerw
Boundaries And Thresholds, Kathleen C. Czerw
Architecture Senior Theses
"The American city is an agglomeration of definitive districts of program and groups of residents, and it is these bounded urban groupings that allow the city to maintain its diversity districts, allowing them to maintain individual identities, and specifically placed thresholds become spaces where the boundaries are broken and two districts momentarily come together. Often times these thresholds are defined by spatial voids within the urban fabric, and through the use of engaging architecture the threshold can become a place of social exchange and mutual cognizance.
The site is a lot that runs parallel to Genesee River and Exchange Street …
Fertile Fragments: An Improvisational Urbanism For The Evolving Urban Edge, Matthew Duggan
Fertile Fragments: An Improvisational Urbanism For The Evolving Urban Edge, Matthew Duggan
Architecture Thesis Prep
"Often cities are developed and designed on a parcel by parcel basis without an overall master plan. Urban actors (architecture, planners, developers, municipalities, engineers, artists, etc.) are responsible for what happens on their land alone. While this can result in a series of discrete separate enclaves it is also possible to graft new developments into/onto existing ones. This thesis contends that fragments of urban form can be guiding catalysts for subsequent urban growth and transformation. It intends to explore the possibilities opened up when urban actors leave behind partial or fragmentary works for others to elaborate upon."

The Providence Public Library At Waterplace Park: Modifying The Public Library To Engage With The Civic Realm, Nicole Lecuivre
Architecture Thesis Prep
"A new library and park placed into an underdeveloped parcel of urban fabric in Providence, Rhode Island will create a new public architecture that reflects the modification of the public library type and engages the civic realm at a greater capacity. A library that functions through indoor and outdoor space will strengthen future urban development of the city center a well as serving as 'the community living room' and an icon of Providence."
