Habermas On Solidarity And Praxis: Between Institutional Reform And Redemptive Revolution In Critical Theory And The Challenge Of Praxis, David Ingram Jan 2015

Habermas On Solidarity And Praxis: Between Institutional Reform And Redemptive Revolution In Critical Theory And The Challenge Of Praxis, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since its inception critical theory has been ambivalent about what kind of political practice it should promote and in the name of what kind of solidarity. Oversimplifying somewhat, the choices fall somewhere between two extremes: Should it promote institutional reform in the name of achieving democratic solidarity? Or should it promote anarchic revolution in the name of achieving solidarity with suppressed nature, redeeming integral life in its totality from narrow self-interest and instrumental reason?

Employer-Employee Congruence In Environmental Values: An Exploration Of Effects On Job Satisfaction And Creativity, Jelena Spanjol, Wing Yin Leona Tam, Vivian Tam Jan 2015

Employer-Employee Congruence In Environmental Values: An Exploration Of Effects On Job Satisfaction And Creativity, Jelena Spanjol, Wing Yin Leona Tam, Vivian Tam

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

This study examines how the match (vs. mismatch) between personal and firm-level values regarding environmental responsibility affects employee job satisfaction and creativity and contributes to three literature streams [i.e., social corporate responsibility, creativity, and person-environment (P-E) fit]. Building on the P-E fit literature, we propose and test environmental orientation fit versus nonfit effects on creativity, identifying job satisfaction as a mediating mechanism and regulatory pressure as a moderator. An empirical investigation indicates that the various environmental orientation fit conditions affect job satisfaction and creativity differently. More specifically, environmental orientation fit produces greater job satisfaction and creativity when the employee and …

Public Perceptions Of Future Threats To Humanity And Different Societal Responses: A Cross-National Study, Melanie J. Randle, Richard Eckersley Jan 2015

Public Perceptions Of Future Threats To Humanity And Different Societal Responses: A Cross-National Study, Melanie J. Randle, Richard Eckersley

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

There is growing scientific evidence that humanity faces a number of threats that jeopardize its future. Public perceptions of these threats, both their risks and reactions to them, are important in determining how humanity confronts and addresses the threats. This study investigated the perceived probability of threats to humanity and different responses to them (nihilism, fundamentalism and activism), in four Western nations: the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Overall, a majority (54%) rated the risk of our way of life ending within the next 100 years at 50% or greater, and a quarter (24%) rated the risk of humans being …

The Characteristics Of Potential Environmental Volunteers: Implications For Marketing Communications, Melanie J. Randle, Sara Dolnicar Jan 2015

The Characteristics Of Potential Environmental Volunteers: Implications For Marketing Communications, Melanie J. Randle, Sara Dolnicar

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Many environmental organisations rely on volunteers to provide important services that would otherwise not be provided by government. However, with the substantial growth in Australia's non-profit sector, the competition for volunteers has increased significantly. Non-profit organisations are implementing marketing strategies to convince potential volunteers that their particular cause is more worthy of an individual's valuable time than other leisure activities. Most studies of volunteers focus on individuals who are already involved; however, equally important is understanding those who have not previously volunteered but who stated their intention to do so in future. This study investigates this notion in the context …

Modelling The Impact Of Perceived Connectivity On The Intention To Use Social Media: Discovering Mediating Effects And Unobserved Heterogeneity, Samuel Fosso Wamba, Shahriar Akter, Eric W. T Ngai, Imed Boughzala Jan 2015

Modelling The Impact Of Perceived Connectivity On The Intention To Use Social Media: Discovering Mediating Effects And Unobserved Heterogeneity, Samuel Fosso Wamba, Shahriar Akter, Eric W. T Ngai, Imed Boughzala

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Early research examined the direct effect of perceived connectivity (PC) on intention to adopt information systems. In this study, we extend that research stream by examining the mediating effects of perceived enjoyment (PE) and perceived playfulness (PP) on the relationship between PC and the intention to use social media within the workplace. To test our proposed model, we collected data from 2,556 social media users from Australia, Canada, India, the UK, and the US. We applied the REBUS-PLS algorithm, a response-based method for detecting unit segments in PLS path modelling and assessing the unobserved heterogeneity in the data sample. Based …

Breaking The Link Between Legal Access To Alcohol And Motor Vehicle Accidents: Evidence From New South Wales, Jason M. Lindo, Peter M. Siminski, Oleg Yerokhin Jan 2015

Breaking The Link Between Legal Access To Alcohol And Motor Vehicle Accidents: Evidence From New South Wales, Jason M. Lindo, Peter M. Siminski, Oleg Yerokhin

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

A large literature has documented significant public health benefits associated with the minimum legal drinking age in the USA, particularly because of the resulting effects on motor vehicle accidents. These benefits form the primary basis for continued efforts to restrict youth access to alcohol. It is important to keep in mind that policymakers have a wide variety of alcohol-control options available to them, and understanding how these policies may complement or substitute for one another can improve policy making moving forward. Towards this end, we propose that investigating the causal effects of the minimum legal drinking age in New South …

Do You Feel Financially Secured? The Investigation Of Economic Indicators Of Financial Well-Being, Tommy Hsu, Wing Yin Leona Tam, Ryan T. Howell Jan 2015

Do You Feel Financially Secured? The Investigation Of Economic Indicators Of Financial Well-Being, Tommy Hsu, Wing Yin Leona Tam, Ryan T. Howell

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

The economy has been in downward movement in the past few years in the United States as well as different parts of the world. Consumers' financial situations have been found to influence their purchase behaviors. While some personal finance experts blame consumers' (lack of) spending plans for their financial situations, others suggest that consumers' perception of their financial standing influences their purchase plans. Using a nationwide large scale survey study, we examined the value of applying economic indicators as proxy measure of financial well-being. Instead of income or debts, wealth was found to be the most important economic indicator of …

Talking Yourself Into Work: Insights From Sociolinguistics About Gender And The Employment Interview, Mary Barrett Jan 2015

Talking Yourself Into Work: Insights From Sociolinguistics About Gender And The Employment Interview, Mary Barrett

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

This chapter gives a brief critical history of three phases of linguistic research into gender and language: an essentialist phase, a constructionist phase and a post-structuralist phase. It pays particular attention to the post-structuralist phase, which focuses on how meaning is actively constructed by both parties to a speech event such as a conversation, and the consequences of particular judgements by the more powerful participants, especially in 'gate-keeping' conversations such as job interviews. We pay particular attention to research into naturally occurring conversations, which employs conversation analysis (CA), an interactional sociolinguistics technique. Campbell and Roberts's (2007) CAbased study of intercultural …

Tales Of It Consultants: Understanding Psychological Contract Maintenance And Employment Termination, Karlheinz Kautz, Gro Bjerknes Jan 2015

Tales Of It Consultants: Understanding Psychological Contract Maintenance And Employment Termination, Karlheinz Kautz, Gro Bjerknes

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

This research investigates the question why dedicated Information Technology (IT) consultants quit their jobs and voluntarily terminate their employment contracts. A research approach inspired by grounded theory is used and as a theoretical contribution a novel, cyclic process model for the maintenance or neglect of the psychological contract between employees and employers is derived from the empirical data. The model is subsequently substantiated through the integration of various concepts and theories identified in the literature, combining the concept of psychological contract with social influence theory and a theory of the relation between intrinsic motivation and management practices. The research is …

Employer Perceptions Of Migrant Candidates' Suitability: The Influence Of Decision-Maker And Organisational Characteristics, Mario Fernando, Shamika Almeida, Shyamali Dharmage Jan 2015

Employer Perceptions Of Migrant Candidates' Suitability: The Influence Of Decision-Maker And Organisational Characteristics, Mario Fernando, Shamika Almeida, Shyamali Dharmage

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

This paper reports on how decision-makers' personal characteristics and organisational characteristics can influence the screening of immigrant professionals during the recruitment and selection process. The sample consisted of 220 decision-makers in the engineering industry working in New South Wales, Australia. The results show White/Anglo Australian decision-makers had more suitability concerns of ethnic migrant candidates during the recruitment and selection process than decision-makers of other ethnicities. However, this was moderated by organisational characteristics of size and clientele. Decision-makers in larger organisations and a diverse ethnic client base showed less suitability concerns of migrant candidates during the recruitment and selection process.

Salespeople's Learning By Doing And Pricing Strategy, Qiang Lu, Ranjit Voola, Shahriar Akter Jan 2015

Salespeople's Learning By Doing And Pricing Strategy, Qiang Lu, Ranjit Voola, Shahriar Akter

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Understanding the salespeople’s dynamic learning process is critical in effective sales force management. Particularly, the ability to understand the customer intimately is critical in facilitating sales people develop capabilities that allow them set prices that best meet the needs of the customer and the company objectives. To the best of our knowledge, there are no studies structurally modelling salespeople’s learning by doing. We develop a Bayesian learning framework to capture salespeople’s learning by doing. In doing so, we argue that for sales organizations who delegate pricing authority to sales people, it is imperative that they understanding how their sales people …

Corporate Social Responsibility Attitudes Of Board Directors In Australian Firms: The Role Of Gender And Spiritual Wellbeing, Bita Najafi, Mario Fernando, Alan A. Pomering Jan 2015

Corporate Social Responsibility Attitudes Of Board Directors In Australian Firms: The Role Of Gender And Spiritual Wellbeing, Bita Najafi, Mario Fernando, Alan A. Pomering

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an important element in portraying corporate identity and building a positive reputation for firms (Cornelius et al. 2007). While at the overall board level, there have been several studies examining the effect of boardlevel attributes on CSR (Dalton et al. 2003; Bonn 2004; McWilliams and Siegel 2000, Bear, Rahman, and Post 2010), at the individual, director level, there has been little research conducted. This study examines individual characteristics of Australian company directors to identify the contributing factors that shape their attitudes to CSR. In particular, in this study, we examine the impact of spiritual wellbeing, …

Who Responds To Financial Incentives For Weight Loss? Evidence From A Randomized Controlled Trial, Alfredo R. Paloyo, Arndt R. Reichert, Monika Reuss-Borst, Harald Tauchmann Jan 2015

Who Responds To Financial Incentives For Weight Loss? Evidence From A Randomized Controlled Trial, Alfredo R. Paloyo, Arndt R. Reichert, Monika Reuss-Borst, Harald Tauchmann

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

There is a paucity of evidence on the heterogeneous impacts of financial incentives on weight loss. Between March 2010 and January 2012, in a randomized controlled trial, we assigned 700 obese persons to three experimental arms. We test whether particular subgroups react differently to financial incentives for weight loss. Two treatment groups obtained a cash reward (€150 and €300 with 237 and 229 participants, respectively) for achieving an individually-assigned target weight within four months; the control group (234 participants) was not incentivized. Participants and administrators were not blinded to the intervention. We find that monetary rewards effectively induced obese individuals …

Back To The Future: Using The Ethical Climate Questionnaire To Understand Ethical Behaviour In Not For Profits, Donna Dark, Mark Rix Jan 2015

Back To The Future: Using The Ethical Climate Questionnaire To Understand Ethical Behaviour In Not For Profits, Donna Dark, Mark Rix

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

The ethical climate of an organisation can be described as the lens by which employees determine what comprises 'correct' behaviour within that organisation. As an outcome of the organisation's culture, many factors influence an ethical climate's design and configuration, including the organisation's history, its structure and management systems, the external environment and the individuals working within it. In order to work out the best ethical structure or ethical framework to support ethical behaviour, ethical climate must first be understood. The ethical climate questionnaire, (ECQ) a tool developed more than 25 years ago, has been applied and refined in empirical research …

Reflecting On Ethics In Netnographic Research, Namita Roy, Ulrike Gretzel, Venkata K. Yanamandram, Gordon R. Waitt

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Netnography uses a mix of unobtrusive as well as interactive methods of research to study consumer behaviour online. The evolving technology has created greater avenues for researchers to apply different ethnographic methods online. However, it has also posed a number of ethical debates. This paper provides a reflective account of ethical dilemmas that were faced by me (researcher) while working on an ethics application using the methods of Netnography. It uses the context of the researcher's PhD research ethics application, to highlight the issues of domain, consent and privacy encountered while working on the ethics application. This paper contributes through …

Identifying The Influencing Factors In Sustainable Tea Supply In The Sri Lankan Tea Industry, Mahawattage Dona Ranmali Pradeepa Jayaratne Jan 2015

Identifying The Influencing Factors In Sustainable Tea Supply In The Sri Lankan Tea Industry, Mahawattage Dona Ranmali Pradeepa Jayaratne

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In monetary terms, the Sri Lankan tea industry was until 1995 consistently the country’s largest exporting element. The tea industry has always played an important role in the Sri Lankan economy, because it uses mainly local resources and over 20% of the population directly depends on it.

The Sri Lankan tea industry also plays a significant role in the global tea industry. For over three decades it was the largest tea exporter into the global supply chain (in both value and volume). However, Sri Lanka is currently ranked as the fourth-largest tea exporter in the world. Tea-production volume has stagnated …

“Investigating The Use And Perceived Effectiveness Of Social Media For Informatics Programs In The Malaysian Higher Education Context.”, Jane See Yin Lim Jan 2015

“Investigating The Use And Perceived Effectiveness Of Social Media For Informatics Programs In The Malaysian Higher Education Context.”, Jane See Yin Lim

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The trend in the use of digital technologies in learning in higher education has been driven by a number of underlying assumptions about the affordances of technology in learning. This trend has not only been advocated by educationalists, who argue for digital technologies as a catalyst for pedagogical change, but also by students themselves as they adopt new ways of collaborating and communicating with their worlds.

A significant amount of literature is now appearing arguing that technology is changing learners with terms like 'digital natives' (Prensky 2001) gaining prominence and authors such as Coates (2007) arguing that these ‘millennial learners’ …

Mingled With All Kinds Of Colours, Teresa Bell Jan 2015

Mingled With All Kinds Of Colours, Teresa Bell

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The Book of Ambiguity is a term I use to define texts that exist outside formal genres and categories created by market forces. The Book of Ambiguity takes reader and writer outside familiar narrative structures, outside traditional positioning of gender, sanity, and sexuality, to an ambiguous meeting place of ecstasy. In this liminal space there is a merging of writer, reader and character, until the sense of a third person, or uninvolved narrator, is challenged. There is a mingling of writer as reader, reader as writer, writer as character, reader as character, reader as book, writer as book, and the …

Sumptuary Law By Any Other Name: Manifestations Of Sumptuary Regulation In Australia, 1901-1927, Caroline Irene Dick Jan 2015

Sumptuary Law By Any Other Name: Manifestations Of Sumptuary Regulation In Australia, 1901-1927, Caroline Irene Dick

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

It is generally considered that sumptuary law is an archaic form of governmental intervention that targeted the personal lives of people living in the early modern period in Europe, and has no modern significance. This thesis examines the post Federation period, between 1901 and 1927, to reveal that the sumptuary impulse was alive and well in modern Australia. This impulse was now transmuted by a new patrician elite into a form of social and legal regulation in order to control the clothing and entertainment choices of working Australians. The impulse was sustained through taxation and fiscal legal mechanisms (ie: tariffs), …

Precursor, Indicator Or Mirage: What Relationship Exists Between Spirituality And Type Of Giftedness?, Russell Walton Jan 2015

Precursor, Indicator Or Mirage: What Relationship Exists Between Spirituality And Type Of Giftedness?, Russell Walton

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Gifted students are often credited with higher levels of spirituality than non-gifted students, whether that be overall spirituality or aspects of spirituality. What has not previously been explored, however, is whether this aspect can be distinguished by type of giftedness. The current study aimed to contribute to filling that gap. The process utilised a theoretical framework that combined Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences theory with Françoys Gagné’s Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent. The resulting model, the Differentiated Model of Multiple Intelligence (DMMI; Walton, 2014), grounds spirituality in conceptions of both intelligence and giftedness.

The research sought to answer two research …

Language Learning As Participation: Case Studies Of Saudi Arabian International Students, Olivia Michelle Groves Jan 2015

Language Learning As Participation: Case Studies Of Saudi Arabian International Students, Olivia Michelle Groves

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis explores the nature of situated language learning; in particular, how learners of English participate in English speaking communities during an international study experience. It addresses a number of research questions to understand how one group of international students interacts with community members and the impact of their culture and identity on it, namely: How do Saudi Arabian international students participate in an overseas English study context? What opportunities are there for Saudi Arabian international students to interact and participate in English language communities of practice? To what extent are they taken up? What sociocultural factors influence the participation …

Diamond Microdosimetry For Radioprotection Applications In Space, Jeremy A. Davis Jan 2015

Diamond Microdosimetry For Radioprotection Applications In Space, Jeremy A. Davis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The harsh space radiation environment, imposes a significant risk, to both biological and non-biological matter. Radiation Induced Damage (RID), depends upon the type and energy of radiation and the material properties of the interacting medium. The similarities between microelectronics and biological cells in relation to RID then, are such that a common methodology of measuring radiation dose might be used. Microdosimetry, being a technique that allows for the measurement of stochastic energy deposition distributions within micron size sensitive volume (SV), is a methodology well suited to act as dose monitoring system for biological and non-biological matter.

A number of restrictions …

Nr2b Or Not 2b? Alterations Of Nr2b In Schizophrenia And The Effect Of An Nr2b Blockade In An Exploratory Mouse Model. Is There A Link Between Nr2b And Schizophrenia Pathology?, Amy Elise Geddes Jan 2015

Nr2b Or Not 2b? Alterations Of Nr2b In Schizophrenia And The Effect Of An Nr2b Blockade In An Exploratory Mouse Model. Is There A Link Between Nr2b And Schizophrenia Pathology?, Amy Elise Geddes

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Schizophrenia is a devastating disorder thought to evolve from a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Evidence suggests that the glutamatergic Nmethyl- D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) may play a central role in the development of the disorder. The NMDAR, including the NR2B subunit of this receptor, is critical for normal brain development and has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, particularly the cognitive symptoms. It is hypothesised that developmental disruption to the NMDAR can cause a cascade of events resulting in altered developmental trajectories of other systems known to be involved in schizophrenia, such as the neuregulin (NRG), gamma-aminobutyric acid …
