Tobacco Control: Are We Appropriately Training Future Health Professionals, Francisco Soto Mas, Chiehwen Hsu Jan 2012

Tobacco Control: Are We Appropriately Training Future Health Professionals, Francisco Soto Mas, Chiehwen Hsu

Francisco Soto Mas

Information on how health professionals perceive tobacco use as well as their attitudes toward tobacco control is scarce. This study assessed the attitudes and perceptions of public health students toward tobacco use and tobacco control, which constitutes a necessary first step in designing effective training strategies. Although the majority of respondents agreed that tobacco use constitutes a relevant public health problem, they did not perceive tobacco control to be a public health priority. Academic institutions may not be properly training public health students, and may therefore be missing the opportunity to advance tobacco control at the national and global levels.

Patterns Of Democratization And State Controlled Pluralism: Is Egypt Going Anywhere?, Ahmed Dardir

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Free elections, reform of the constitution, reform initiatives, political prisons, emergency law: the usual ingredients of the Egyptian political scene. Does all this lead to a process of democratization? While the regime is widening, can democracy work without mass participation? Is democracy a procedure or a nationwide project? Can democratization work under emergency laws? Can democratization work from above? This paper aims to provide an in-depth exploration of these questions.

Book Review: The Myth Of Law And Literature, Bernadette A. Meyler Dec 2005

Book Review: The Myth Of Law And Literature, Bernadette A. Meyler

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In The Myth of Moral Justice, Thane Rosenbaum generates an ambitious and idealistic plan for a rapprochement between law and morality, between emotion and reason, and between law and its literary representations. Laudable and inspiring, Rosenbaum's project remains flawed in several ways that are traceable back to his reliance on aspects of law and literature scholarship. Unfortunately, Rosenbaum's attempt to replace the myth of moral justice with a truly moral legal system depends itself on a particular set of myths about law and literature. After examining two recent critiques of the law and literature movement, one from the vantage point …

A Comparison Of Learning Subjective And Traditional Probability In Middle Grades, Jeanne D. Rast

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations

The emphasis given to probability and statistics in the K-12 mathematics curriculum has brought attention to the various approaches to probability and statistics concepts, as well as how to teach these concepts. Teachers from fourth, fifth, and sixth grades from a small suburban Catholic school engaged their students (n=87) in a study to compare learning traditional probability concepts to learning traditional and subjective probability concepts. The control group (n=44) received instruction in traditional probability, while the experimental group (n=43) received instruction in traditional and subjective probability. A Multivariate Analysis of Variance and a Bayesian t-test were used to analyze pretest …

Americanizing The American Woman: Symbols Of Nationalism In The Ladies Home Journal, 1890-1900, Kaithlyn Kayer

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

When the Ladies’ Home Journal began in 1883, its creator, Mr. Cyrus H. K. Curtis, could not have possibly dreamed that the magazine would grow to be the most influential woman’s journal of all time. A material culture analysis of American nationalistic emblems published in the Ladies’ Home Journal between 1890 and 1900 will determine how Edward Bok, editor, controlled nationalism in the feminine market, displaying the openness of women to nationalism in the late 19th century. It will also reveal how Bok created and controlled an educational tool he deemed “Americanization”, establishing a technique that magazines would replicate in …

Delayed Versus Immediate Feedback In An Independent Study High School Setting, Duane C. Lemley Dec 2005

Delayed Versus Immediate Feedback In An Independent Study High School Setting, Duane C. Lemley

Theses and Dissertations

Although there is general agreement that feedback plays an important role in student performance, the majority of the studies found in the research literature explore the impact of different types of feedback in a traditional and university-level setting. In order to explore the impact of different feedback types in a non-traditional distance learning setting, 352 high school students enrolled in courses offered through BYU's Independent Study (IS) department received either delayed feedback or immediate feedback generated by Speedback™, BYU's automated grading and feedback program, depending on whether they had opted to submit end of unit assignments by mail or …

Mechanomyographic Amplitude And Frequency Responses During Dynamic Muscle Actions: A Comprehensive Review, Travis W. Beck, Terry J. Housh, Joel T. Cramer, Joseph P. Weir, Glen O. Johnson, Jared W. Coburn, Moh H. Malek, Michelle Mielke

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this review is to examine the literature that has investigated mechanomyographic (MMG) amplitude and frequency responses during dynamic muscle actions. To date, the majority of MMG research has focused on isometric muscle actions. Recent studies, however, have examined the MMG time and/or frequency domain responses during various types of dynamic activities, including dynamic constant external resistance (DCER) and isokinetic muscle actions, as well as cycle ergometry. Despite the potential influences of factors such as changes in muscle length and the thickness of the tissue between the muscle and the MMG sensor, there is convincing evidence that during …

A Quantitative Examination Of Title I And Non-Title I Elementary Schools In East Tennessee Using Fourth-Grade Math And Reading Standardized Test Scores., Amy M. Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In January 2002, President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind legislation into law. The law established new standards of accountability for individual students, schools, and school systems. Because of No Child Left Behind, the penalties for schools with poor academic performance in our country are the loss of reputation, student enrollment, and financial support. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in standardized test scores in reading and math between fourth-grade students in Title I schools and those in NonTitle I schools. The study focused on the following subgroups: gender, …

A Psychological Literary Critique From A Jungian Perspective Of E. M. Forster's A Passage To India., David W. Elliott Dec 2005

A Psychological Literary Critique From A Jungian Perspective Of E. M. Forster's A Passage To India., David W. Elliott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper is a psychological reading of E. M. Forster's A Pasage to India. It uses the psychological theories of C. G. Jung and the methodological postulates of Jungian literary critic, Terence Dawson, to examine the psychological implications of the text, especially in relation to the novel's characters. Attention is given to biographical material related to Forster, particularly his homosexuality, that is important for understanding the psychological implications of the text as well as Forster's art. The paper concludes that the Marabar Caves is the the central psychological symbol of the narrative, representing what Jung calls the collective unconscious. Both …

Indefinite Ethnicity In Fact And Fiction: "Invisible Color" Or "Honkified Meanderings"?, Anita Louise Hughes Dec 2005

Indefinite Ethnicity In Fact And Fiction: "Invisible Color" Or "Honkified Meanderings"?, Anita Louise Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Passing, both standard and reverse, is the process of changing ethnicity. The methodology of reverse passing varies, but claiming "no color" is ineffective in fact and fiction as can be seen in James McBride's The Color of Water, Shirlee Taylor Haizlip's The Sweeter the Juice, Danzy Senna's Caucasia, and Rosellen Brown's Half a Heart. The characters in these texts attempt indefinite ethnicity by denying color and are prone to restlessness and failure until they accept racial duality.

From Condemnation To Conformity: Carter And Reagan's Foreign Policy Towards The Argentine Junta, 1977-1982., William Houston Gilbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how the administrations of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan responded to the widespread human rights abuses committed by the Argentine military during the country's Dirty War between 1977 and 1982. The objective is to gain a broader understanding of the policies pursued by both administrations. Under Carter, who brought human rights to the forefront of American foreign policy, Argentina was heavily targeted and sanctioned with the anticipation that such measures would enhance the human rights status in Argentina. Ultimately, such policies resulted in open hostility in bilateral relations, culminating in Argentina's refusal to support Carter's proposed grain …
