Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Chinese immigrants (CIs) with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) generally have poor control in their diet regimen. Due to the variation in body mass, physiology, and cultural differences as compare with the general American population, special attention must be conducted in treating diabetes in Cis, emphasizing culturally sensitive care and nutrition therapy that acknowledge the differences. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to assess cultural challenges in self-management for CIs living with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and evaluate the effectiveness of a diabetic nutritional self-management guide tailored to this population. Theoretical Framework: Havelock’s theory of change is a …

On March 15, 2019 in Christchurch, New Zealand, a white supremacist entered a mosque full of worshippers and gunned down over 50 people. He was welcomed into the house of worship as Muslim immigrants and converts were about to start their Friday prayers. News of the attack spread quickly across the globe. Social media news feeds and online sources provided near-instantaneous updates. There were calls to prioritize the lives and stories of the victims and survivors. Although there were calls not to glorify or even humanize the shooter, people understandably professed interest in his writings and his motivation. Once it …

Healing From Heterosexism Through Expressive Writing, Kathleen M. Collins
Healing From Heterosexism Through Expressive Writing, Kathleen M. Collins
Graduate Masters Theses
Simply by existing within our society, LGBTQ people encounter widespread exposure to heterosexist attitudes, behaviors, and policies on a daily basis that ignore, invalidate, or outright discriminate against them. This marginalization contributes to myriad psychological consequences such as depression, suicidality, anxiety, and substance abuse. Despite the fact that LGBTQ people experience mental health issues and some subsequently seek treatment, few interventions exist that specifically address LGBTQ minority stressors; those that do exist tend to treat mental health consequences of societal heterosexism, rather than offering ways to heal from heterosexist experiences directly. In the current study, I explored the ability of …

Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis provides the results of a comprehensive analysis of the metal artifact assemblage from Magunkaquog, a mid-17th- to early-18th-century “Praying Indian” community located in present-day Ashland, Massachusetts. Magunkaquog was the seventh of fourteen “Praying Indian” settlements Puritan missionary John Eliot helped in gathering between the years of 1651-1674 as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s attempts to convert local Native American populations to Christianity. Originally the site was discovered during a cultural resource management survey conducted by the Public Archaeological Lab (PAL), and further investigated by the Fiske Center for Archaeological Research (then known as the Center for Cultural …

The Charge Of Deserting Their Sphere: The Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society And Women’S Place In The Abolitionist Movement, Megan Irene Brady
Graduate Masters Theses
Responding to the all-male American Anti-Slavery Society and inspired by the expansion of women’s benevolent organizations, the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society (BFAS) was founded in 1833. At the outset, the members defined themselves as pious women dedicated to immediate emancipation, while making no overtures to challenging their place in society. BFAS grew quickly in influence and membership, and helped organize the first national women’s anti-slavery convention in 1837. The convention brought together female abolitionists from all over the United States, some of whom espoused more radical views on women’s rights. This thesis examines how interactions at the national conventions—a network …

Abstract
Background
We aimed to understand disparities in the receipt of a 504 Plan among US children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) using the federal poverty level (FPL) as an indicator of socioeconomic status.
Methods
We analyzed a subpopulation of the 2014 National Survey of the Diagnosis and Treatment of ADHD and Tourette Syndrome (n=2282) children aged 8-17 years. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were used to assess the association of the FPL with receipt of a 504 Plan.

A Farm Newspaper Capitulates To Advertiser Pressure: Determinants Of Readers’ Attitudes Toward The Firing Of An Editorial Cartoonist, Lulu Rodriguez, Supathida Kulpavaropas
Journal of Applied Communications
On April 2016, the weekly Farm News cut its ties with veteran freelancer Rick Friday who drew a cartoon that called attention to how much the CEOs of large agricultural corporations are paid. This study examines the determinants of people’s attitudes toward Mr. Friday’s firing. Using data gathered from a national online survey of newspaper readers, this study traced the antecedents of these attitudes. While the incident drew strong negative reactions, we found that public attitudes were strongly mediated by readers’ attitudes toward Big Ag advertisers. That is, those who saw Big Ag in a positive light were more inclined …

The Corporeality Of Clothing In Medieval Literature: Cognition, Kinesis, And The Sacred, Sarah Brazil
The Corporeality Of Clothing In Medieval Literature: Cognition, Kinesis, And The Sacred, Sarah Brazil
Early Drama, Art, and Music
Every known society wears some form of clothing. It is central to how we experience our bodies and how we understand the sociocultural dimensions of our embodiment. It is also central to how we understand works of literature. In this innovative study, Brazil demonstrates how medieval writers use clothing to direct readers’ and spectators’ awareness to forms of embodiment. Offering insights into how poetic works, plays, and devotional treatises target readers’ kinesic intelligence—their ability to understand movements and gestures—Brazil demonstrates the theological implications of clothing, often evinced by how garments limit or facilitate the movements and postures of bodies in …

This report identifies the effect of passing distance laws on drivers’ behaviors and bicyclist’s safety during an overtaking maneuver. Using an instrumented bicycle and driver survey, the study measured bicycle passing in a naturalistic field experiment using video recording, an ultrasonic distance measuring device, and a LiDAR. In order to evaluate the effect of passing distance laws, the study examined jurisdictions with a three-foot passing law, with a five-foot passing law, and without a passing law. The experiment required a bicyclist to ride the instrumented bicycle in two-lane and three-lane roads to capture the distance between the bicycle and the …

Uncovered Truths Of The Inequalities Encountered By Female Educators, Rachel Katoll
Undergraduate Voices
This paper was conducted to illustrate the paradox of a female dominated field praising male educators over their female counterparts. This is proven to be the case through workplace mistreatment, professional growth opportunities, and struggles encountered through recruitment. Through this paper, I evaluate the tear down of female educators as men become the prioritized employee. The information drawn together throughout this paper came from a collection of online sources, personal interviews, and articles.

Based on WHO data, Indonesia has the third largest leprosy burden in the world, afterIndia and Brazil. Although leprosy was declared to be eliminated in severalprovinces, there are still several leprosy settlements spread in Indonesia. Oneof these settlements is Neglasari village in Tangerang City, West Java, whereleprosy patients have been living since 1981. There is a scarcity ofinformation regarding the features of leprosy in Indonesia, especially aboutthe description of the patients’ posttreatment condition in terms of bothclinical sequelae and health services provided. Individual’S Self Awareness Of Mental Illness: The Effects On Implicit Bias, Microaggressions, And Racial Discrimination, Sarah Zoubaa
Student Theses
The purpose of the current study is to understand the factors that impact how persons experiencing subclinical psychological symptoms or an undiagnosed but clinically significant psychological problem perceive individuals who been diagnosed with mental illness. Previous literature has investigated the experiences of discrimination among those with mental health problems, but not their attitudes and behavior towards individuals among their in-group. It was hypothesized that individuals with an emerging mental health problem will have higher rates of implicit bias and perpetrate more microaggressions towards those with a mental illness in order to remove themselves from a group that is associated with …

A Novella In Technicolor: The Artistic Connections To Theme And Prose In "The Hour Of The Star", Abby Thatcher
Student Works
Brazilian author-painter Clarice Lispector's work, especially her prose in her last published novella The Hour of the Star, is rich with deliberate color use; her abstracted prose style, including abstraction of punctuation, deliberate mention of specific colors during her narrative, and fragmented sentence structure all create an rich word-painting of the main character Macabea. This word painting creates an opportunity for Lispector to color her work with sharply pointed satire, convey political and social agendas of awareness, and ultimately places Macabea in an image-rich and meaning-driven view to the reader. This view is aided by further analysis of Lispector's little-known …

“I’M The Greatest”: Pride, Impression Management, And Denial Of Coercive Control And Physical Abuse By Perpetrators Of Intimate Partner Violence, Benjamin Reissman, Kendra Doychak M.A., Angela Crossman Ph.D., Chitra Raghavan Ph.D.
Student Theses
Coercive control and physical abuse are two prominent forms of intimate partner violence (IPV), often accompanied by with impression management to conceal such behavior. However, intrinsic motives for engaging in impression management by male IPV offenders are not well-known. The present study makes use of archival data from 85 heterosexual men in a batterer treatment program to gauge how pride, shame, and guilt may relate to impression management and reported IPV. Admission to shame and guilt appear to be correlated with and predictive of both forms of reported abuse, along with the absence of impression management. This implies that internalized …

Women Rights Fulfillment As The Victim Of Gross Human Rights Violation: Urgency For The Sexual Violence Eradication Bill, Ani Purwanti, Rian Adhivira Prabowo
Indonesia Law Review
Heretofore in Indonesia, cases of gross violation of human rights have faced an indefinite stagnation of justice. Although the Indonesian government has ratified international human rights conventions and enacted its own system of human rights law, such laws have proven unable to fulfill the restoration of justice toward these victims in two particular aspects: convictions against the perpetrators and reparations for the victims. This article focuses on fulfilling the rights of women victims of past gross human rights violations. It will be based on normative legal research by which the existing laws are critically analyzed in order to expose the …

Social Capital And Health: Empirical Evidence From Indonesia, Cynthia Rosalin
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Through the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS4 and IFLS5), this paper examined effects of individuals’ social capital on various health outcomes, analyzing specifically whether generalized trust, bridging social capital (trust in many ethnic groups, trust in many religious beliefs), and social isolation had effects on various health outcomes. Estimated results for fixed-effects models did not show significance in any health outcome variables, except for social isolation, which had a positive effect on self-perceived health. Moreover, estimated results for random-effect probit models showed that generalized trust had weak negative effect on self-perceived health, while trust in many ethnic groups had negative …
