Peculiar Primates: An Analysis Of Old Kingdom Tomb Decoration Using Unusual Scenes With Primates, Remi Feliza Chan Apr 2015

Peculiar Primates: An Analysis Of Old Kingdom Tomb Decoration Using Unusual Scenes With Primates, Remi Feliza Chan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An Old Kingdom elite tomb is more than just a location for the interment of an ancient individual; in fact, it is a complex, integrated unit composed of various elemets that work together to fulfill the function and purpose of the tomb. One of these elements is the tomb's decoration, which includes a variety of scenes. Just eight scenes from the Fourth to Sixth Dynasties represent primates in a manner that is not common for the Old Kingdom and therefore considered "peculiar." In order to comprehend the purpose of these "peculiar" scenes, one must contextualize the scenes by examining Old …

Variation In Marital Quality In A National Sample Of Divorced Women, Spencer L. James Apr 2015

Variation In Marital Quality In A National Sample Of Divorced Women, Spencer L. James

Faculty Publications

Previous work has compared marital quality between stably married and divorced individuals. Less work has examined the possibility of variation among divorcés in trajectories of marital quality as divorce approaches. This study addressed that hole by first examining whether distinct trajectories of marital quality can be discerned among women whose marriages ended in divorce and, second, the profile of women who experienced each trajectory. Latent class growth analyses with longitudinal data from a nationally representative sample were used to “look backward” from the time of divorce. Although demographic and socioeconomic variables from this national sample did not predict the trajectories …

Comparison Of Body Composition Assessment Techniques In Older Adult Females, Lauren Yacapraro Apr 2015

Comparison Of Body Composition Assessment Techniques In Older Adult Females, Lauren Yacapraro

Honors Projects

Comparison of Body Composition Assessment Techniques in Older Adult Females

Introduction: As the aging population increases, the need for accurate assessment of chronic disease risk also increases. There is considerable debate over the best way to assess this risk. BMI is a weight-to-height ratio that is commonly used to assess adiposity and obesity related risk. However, it does not differentiate lean (i.e., muscle and bone) versus fat mass – the true predictors of obesity-related diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease and diabetes). This is prevalent in post-menopausal women who often experience age-related gains in fat mass and losses in lean mass.

An Assessment Of Affirmative Action In Business, Jordan A. Kennedy Apr 2015

An Assessment Of Affirmative Action In Business, Jordan A. Kennedy

Honors Scholar Theses

Affirmative action has become an inevitable aspect of the employment hiring process. It has been put into place to assist in eradicating the institutionalized discrimination that inherently exists in such practices. On the surface, affirmative action may appear to be something that is beneficial to both the hiring institution and the individual; it seems to be a win-win situation because the business is creating a more diverse workplace and the individual is getting a job that they desired. However, the way that affirmative action is practiced may prevent its overall effectiveness. For example, there are several fundamental flaws with this …

Resilience In Physically Abused Children: Protective Factors For Aggression, Megan R. Holmes, Susan Yoon, Laura A. Voith, Julia M. Kobulsky, Stacey Steigerwald Apr 2015

Resilience In Physically Abused Children: Protective Factors For Aggression, Megan R. Holmes, Susan Yoon, Laura A. Voith, Julia M. Kobulsky, Stacey Steigerwald

Faculty Scholarship

Aggression continues to be a serious problem among children, especially those children who have experienced adverse life events such as maltreatment. However, there are many maltreated children who show resilient functioning. This study investigated potential protective factors (i.e., child prosocial skills, child internalizing well-being, and caregiver well-being) that promoted positive adaptation and increased the likelihood of a child engaging in the healthy, normative range of aggressive behavior, despite experiencing physical maltreatment. Logistic regression analyses were conducted using two waves of data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW-I). Children who were physically maltreated were more likely to …

"To Deal", Kyle Peterson Apr 2015

"To Deal", Kyle Peterson

Art and Art History Honors Papers

My objective in beginning this series was to, quite simply, deal with personal issues. I wanted to begin to dissect and make sense of my experiences through critical understanding of the different internal and external social pressures I was feeling. I did so by creating a series of life-size objects referencing and conflicting with both my own and other’s bodies in space. These objects in their scene have taken on a life of their own that places them in a dialogue beyond just my own experience, furthering to allow for other’s experiences to be reflected as well. The result was …

The Impact Of Red Light Cameras On Injury Crashes Within Miami-Dade County, Florida, Anthoni Llau Apr 2015

The Impact Of Red Light Cameras On Injury Crashes Within Miami-Dade County, Florida, Anthoni Llau

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous red light camera (RLC) studies have shown reductions in violations and overall and right angle collisions, however, they may also result in increases in rear-end crashes (Retting & Kyrychenko, 2002; Retting & Ferguson, 2003). Despite their apparent effectiveness, many RLC studies have produced imprecise findings due to inappropriate study designs and/or statistical techniques to control for biases (Retting & Kyrychenko, 2002), therefore, a more comprehensive approach is needed to accurately assess whether they reduce motor vehicle injury collisions. The objective of this proposal is to assess whether RLC’s improve safety at signalized intersections within Miami-Dade County, Florida. Twenty signalized …

Through The Looking Glass Space To New Ways Of Knowing: A Personal Research Narrative, Gabrielle Brand Apr 2015

Through The Looking Glass Space To New Ways Of Knowing: A Personal Research Narrative, Gabrielle Brand

The Qualitative Report

This article describes how writing personal research narratives during my doctoral research journey challenged my role as a health professional and my personal beliefs and values in fundamental ways. In qualitative narrative inquiry, the reflexive account of the research experience is a key element in conducting ethical, rigorous, and meaningful forms of qualitative research. However, as a novice researcher, I was unprepared for the unlearning journey I experienced during the research process. This uncomfortable experience cut to the core of my identity by dismantling unexamined belief and value systems that lay dormant and hidden from my everyday consciousness as a …

Students Talk About Gender And Race Within The Classroom, Amanda Lucock

Media and Communication Studies Honors Papers

This study attempts to gain a better understanding of students’ experiences and perceptions of conversations about gender and race in the classroom. Specifically, this study focuses on issues and concerns that arise in the course of talking about gender and race. There were over 20 hours of classes observed, eight one-on-one in-depth interviews, and over three hours of recorded classroom conversations. Through my analysis, I found that students used several devices, including storytelling and attacking, to speak about these taboo issues within the classroom.

The Pain Of Combat For Mexican-American Veterans: A Cohort Analysis Of Vietnam And Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans, Roberto Cancio Jr. Apr 2015

The Pain Of Combat For Mexican-American Veterans: A Cohort Analysis Of Vietnam And Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans, Roberto Cancio Jr.

Open Access Theses

The pain from combat as associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a rising epidemic among Mexican-Americans. According to a study conducted by the United States (U.S.) Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) in 1990, Hispanics have higher rates of PTSD than whites, 28% to 14% respectively (Loo 2014). This study uses grounded theory as methodology to examine the meanings given to pain, the meanings given to labels associated with pain, and the overall experience of male Mexican-American veterans. This study bridges existing gaps in the literature and serves as an important step in unraveling the influence of ethnicity on social …

High School Musicians And Their Perceptions Of Music In Academic And Non-Academic Settings, Matthew J. Rescsanski Apr 2015

High School Musicians And Their Perceptions Of Music In Academic And Non-Academic Settings, Matthew J. Rescsanski

Honors Scholar Theses

Contemporary research has shown that school music programs have increasingly struggled with relevancy in recent years (Boon, 2014; Green, 2006; Woody, 2007) as students primarily experience music outside of school through informal practices of popular music and culture. It is therefore extremely important for music educators to better understand the perceptions their students have of music in both of these settings. In this study, students were asked via survey and interview about their perceptions of the music they make in school and in other settings, such as at home, with friends, or as a part of a religious activity. Findings …

Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold: An Ecocritical Reading Of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, Benjamin Maxwell Garner Apr 2015

Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold: An Ecocritical Reading Of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, Benjamin Maxwell Garner

Honors Theses

In her introduction to The Ecocriticism Reader, Cheryl Glotfelty concisely, and perhaps too simply, defines the field of literary criticism that is ecocriticism. For all intents and purposes, is it an earth-centered approach to literary studies. It is suggested in her definition, but not explicitly stated, that ecocriticism can be defined as the study and interpretation of text from an ecological and environmental perspective. To read a text ecocritically then, is to examine the specific role of nature, environment, and ecology in the text, and from that reading of the text to apply the observations to offer solutions and alternative …

With more advanced and more aggressive chemotherapy cancer treatment leading to higher survival rates, complications with quality of life are becoming more prominent. Of these complications, delayed cognitive processing, commonly known as “chemo brain,” is becoming a topic of interest. Cognitive changes are some of the most common as well as most challenging complications associated with central nervous system (CNS) directed treatment, such as intrathecal chemotherapy, for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and brain tumors. The term “chemo brain” is often used to describe self-reported or observed cognitive processing delays in patients who receive chemotherapy as a form of cancer treatment …

Literature Review Of Nosocomial Infections Passed Through Nurses' Personal Items, Corina Hickman

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

As defined by the encyclopedia, nosocomial infections are infections whose development is favored by a hospital environment, such as one acquired by a patient during a hospital visit or one developing among hospital staff. There has been more of a prevalence of hospital-acquired infections that are linked directly to medical personnel – especially nurses. Nurses have the most contact with patients and are potentially putting patients at highest risk for nosocomial infections. Even though nurses are following isolation precautions and standard hand washing in between patients; there are still a few things on nurses that could be harmful to their …

Self-Esteem Issues In Facebook Users, Derry E. Gutierrez

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Social networking sites (SNS) like Facebook provide several social comparison opportunities. College students use several methods of social media to communicate and stay in touch with friends and family around the world. Although Facebook allows its users to post pictures, plan social events, meet new people, sustain relationships, and observe others’ lives, it also traps its users into a world where they (consciously and unconsciously) compare their lives to those of others. Facebook users self-evaluate and self-enhance their lives by socially comparing themselves with the detailed information they receive from other users. This frequent comparison indicates that social network sites …
