A Congregation of Colored Sisters in New Orleans! To those unfamiliar with the history of the Crescent City, this seems not only an impossibility. Was not New Orleans the slave mart of the South? Is not the color or race prejudice a traditional still adhered to? Is this Congregation in its infancy? If so, when was it founded and by whom? These, and many other questions of the same type are asked by tourists when they are informed that the building on Orleans Street, formerly the Orleans b ballroom, is the Convent of the Holy Family and the motherhouse of …

A Study Of Different Methods Of Applying Ammonium Sulfate Alone And In A Complete Fertilizer, Clarence Burnham May 1931

A Study Of Different Methods Of Applying Ammonium Sulfate Alone And In A Complete Fertilizer, Clarence Burnham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The beneficial effects obtained from the application of farmyard manure to the soil have long been known in Utah, but now the point has apparently been reached where it becomes evident that the supply of manure is hardly adequate in some sections where intensive cropping is practiced. The use of commercial fertilizers to increase crop yields is a new practice in Utah agriculture as is shown in Table 1 from an estimate made from data kindly furnished by the Columbia Steel Company, Anaconda Copper Mining Company, Ford Motor Company, Armour Packing Company, and Porter Walton Company.

The early sales in …

Development Of Public School Music, Keith B. Deswarte May 1931

Development Of Public School Music, Keith B. Deswarte

Bachelors’ Theses

The object of this thesis is to show to what extent music is recognized in the public schools. Its growth, in other words, from the singing school to the well rounded and organized music course of the present day public school. There is a slowly developing conviction that m ch of the old teaching of art in. the schools is attended by great waste, if not real injury to children on account of false pedagogical principles and lack of understanding of. child development. In the development of this thesis, I will try to show the new methods of music in …

Modern Elements In The Graphic Arts, Carroll Arimond

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to define and illustrate what is meant by the word "modernism" as applied to art, and how it has evidenced itself in the graphic arts - namely, printing, lithography, and the other applied arts which appeal to the sense of sight. The samples of the graphic arts used in the compilation of this thesis are from the pages of America's leading magazines portraying to the reader the influence of the new school on the advertising industry. Hence the ultimate purpose will be to show how advertising has been revolutionized in its mechanics and to …

The Influence Of Business Upon Country Newspapers, Robert J. Burt

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is intended to point out the effect which business conditions have exerted upon the typical country weekly newspaper.in point of editorial policy, treatment of the news, and the handling of advertising. Particular emphasis is laid on the effects of the current business depression, although some of the practices enumerated are undoubtedly of long standing and have no direct connection with present conditions.

Although some of the points to be discussed are to be classified among the faults of newspapers, this is not intended as a wholesale condemnation of the country news paper. In editorial optimism and overdisplay of …

Juvenile Delinquency And Education, Mary J. Carrigan May 1931

Juvenile Delinquency And Education, Mary J. Carrigan

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of juvenile delinquency is as old as humanity. Ever since there have been children there has been the problem of their misdemeanors and punishment. In the beginning the treatment of the problem was relatively simple since it was purely a family affair and entirely under the jurisdiction of the father as the head of the family. As civilization became more complex so did the problem of delinquency. The factors which caused it increased in number and importance, bringing about greater complexity in its punishment and treatment. At first little or no attention was given to any means of …
