The Family History Artworks Of Valerie Atkisson, Josh E. Probert Sep 2006

The Family History Artworks Of Valerie Atkisson, Josh E. Probert

BYU Studies Quarterly

Valerie Atkisson, an artist who lives in the Bronx, New York, exemplifies a generation of Mormon artists who are at home navigating the world of Contemporary art while maintaining their personal and spiritual identity. Family history, transgenerational inquiry, and relatedness have been the majority subjects of Atkisson’s work thus far. “What began as an interest in my ancestors has turned into an insatiable desire to know as much about them as possible,” she says. “[My work] is a continuation of them, not just that my flesh and blood are a part of them, but the remembrance is also an extension …

Laser Ablation Of Optically Thin Absorbing Liquid Layer Predeposited Onto A Transparent Solid Substrate, S. I. Kudryashov, K. Lyon, S. D. Shukla, D. Murry, S. D. Allen Sep 2006

Laser Ablation Of Optically Thin Absorbing Liquid Layer Predeposited Onto A Transparent Solid Substrate, S. I. Kudryashov, K. Lyon, S. D. Shukla, D. Murry, S. D. Allen

Mechanical Engineering - Daytona Beach

Ablation of optically thin liquid 2-propanol layers of variable thickness on IR-transparent solid Si substrate by a nanosecond CO 2laser has been experimentally studied using time-resolved optical interferometric and microscopy techniques. Basic ablation parameters - threshold fluences for surface vaporization and explosive homogeneous boiling of the superheated liquid, ablation depths, vaporization (ablation) rates, and characteristic ablation times versus laser fluence - were measured as a function of alcohol layer thickness. The underlying ablation mechanisms, their thermodynamics, and microscopic details are discussed.

Major Chinese Full-Text Electronic Information Resources For Researchers And Scholars, Jue Wang Sep 2006

Major Chinese Full-Text Electronic Information Resources For Researchers And Scholars, Jue Wang

DLPS Faculty Publications

China’s electronic publishing industry has developed very rapidly over the past decade. China has become one of the electronic publishing centers in Asia and will continue to flourish in the future. Chinese electronic databases provide the most efficient way for scholars, researchers and students to perform searches as well as to provide information for businesses and governments. In this article, the author gives a brief overview of selected databases which represent a small portion of the Chinese electronic resources and hopes it will serve as a reference to Chinese scholars world-wide.

Practical Private Data Matching Deterrent To Spoofing Attacks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Sep 2006

Practical Private Data Matching Deterrent To Spoofing Attacks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Private data matching between the data sets of two potentially distrusted parties has a wide range of applications. However, existing solutions have substantial weaknesses and do not meet the needs of many practical application scenarios. In particular, practical private data matching applications often require discouraging the matching parties from spoofing their private inputs. In this paper, we address this challenge by forcing the matching parties to "escrow" the data they use for matching to an auditorial agent, and in the "after-the-fact" period, they undertake the liability to attest the genuineness of the escrowed data.

In Situ Muscle Power Differs Without Varying In Vitro Mechanical Properties In Two Insect Leg Muscles Innervated By The Same Motor Neuron, Anna N. Ahn, Kenneth Meijer, Robert J. Full Sep 2006

In Situ Muscle Power Differs Without Varying In Vitro Mechanical Properties In Two Insect Leg Muscles Innervated By The Same Motor Neuron, Anna N. Ahn, Kenneth Meijer, Robert J. Full

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The mechanical behavior of muscle during locomotion is often predicted by its anatomy, kinematics, activation pattern and contractile properties. The neuromuscular design of the cockroach leg provides a model system to examine these assumptions, because a single motor neuron innervates two extensor muscles operating at a single joint. Comparisons of the in situ measurements under in vivo running conditions of muscle 178 to a previously examined muscle (179) demonstrate that the same inputs (e.g. neural signal and kinematics) can result in different mechanical outputs. The same neural signal and kinematics, as determined during running, can result in different mechanical functions, …

Optimal Movement Variability: A New Theoretical Perspective For Neurologic Physical Therapy, Nikolaos Stergiou, Regina T. Harbourne, James T. Cavanaugh Sep 2006

Optimal Movement Variability: A New Theoretical Perspective For Neurologic Physical Therapy, Nikolaos Stergiou, Regina T. Harbourne, James T. Cavanaugh

Journal Articles

Variability is a natural and important feature of human movement. Using existing theoretical frameworks as a foundation, we propose a new model to explain movement variability as it relates to motor learning and health. We contend that mature motor skills and healthy states are associated with an optimal amount of movement variability. This variability also has form and is characterized by a chaotic structure. Less than optimal movement variability characterizes biological systems that are overly rigid and unchanging, whereas greater than optimal variability characterizes systems that are noisy and unstable. Both situations characterize systems that are less adaptable to perturbations, …

Surgical Correction Of Severe Bilateral Thumb Pincer-Nail Deformity, Scott T. Van Duzer, John S. Taras Sep 2006

Surgical Correction Of Severe Bilateral Thumb Pincer-Nail Deformity, Scott T. Van Duzer, John S. Taras

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

A 53 year old woman presented to the office with complaint of severe bilateral thumb nail pain and the deformity shown (Figure 1). She denied previous trauma to her thumb nails and had no history of previous bacterial or fungal infections of her nails. Based on the curvature of her nails, which increased from proximal to distal, a diagnosis of bilateral thumb pincer nail deformity was made.

Amputation Injuries Due To Forklifts, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Kentucky Haz Alerts--Other

To prevent injuries from forklifts while working:

  • Before you operate a forklift, make sure that you are trained and certified.
  • Remember if you are on a sit-down type forklift, and it starts to over-turn, lean in the opposite direction, stay with the forklift; don’t jump.
  • When operating a forklift on site, slow the truck and sound the horn at cross aisles, exits, and other employee traverse points.
  • Before dismounting, set the parking brake, lower the forks or lifting carriage, and neutralize controls.

Housing And Service Options For Older Adults In Maine, Julie T. Fralich Mba, Kate Maggioncalda Sep 2006

Housing And Service Options For Older Adults In Maine, Julie T. Fralich Mba, Kate Maggioncalda

Disability & Aging

Older adults want to live at home and in their community as independently as possible for as long as possible (Bayer & Harper L, 2000). The housing and service needs of older adults vary greatly by age, by condition, by setting, by geographic region, and over time. Some older adults do not require any supportive services; others need services that may range from assistance with shopping to extensive need for nursing care. Needs also fluctuate in response to acute events (often requiring hospitalizations), or other temporary changes in health status. The challenge is to have a mix of private and …
