Tian As Cosmos In Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2017

Tian As Cosmos In Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Tian” is central to the metaphysics, cosmology, and ethics of the eight-hundred-year-long Chinese philosophical tradition we call “Neo-Confucianism,” but there is considerable confusion over what tian means—confusion which is exacerbated by its standard translation into English as “Heaven.” This essay analyzes the meaning of tian in the works of the most influential Neo-Confucian, Zhu Xi (1130-1200), presents a coherent interpretation that unifies the disparate aspects of the term’s meaning, and argues that “cosmos” does an excellent job of capturing this meaning, and therefore should be adopted as our translation of tian.

“Grieving Like A Normal Person”: Examining Responses To Grief In Nina Lacour’S We Are Okay, Kate E. Kedley, Jenna Spiering Dec 2017

“Grieving Like A Normal Person”: Examining Responses To Grief In Nina Lacour’S We Are Okay, Kate E. Kedley, Jenna Spiering

Kate Kedley

Themes of death, dying, and grieving are not only omnipresent in literature, but are experiences that have shaped all students’ lives in some way. However, teachers are often lacking concrete pedagogical strategies for engaging students with this important topic in their classrooms. In this paper, the authors suggest the use of perspective-taking strategies, grounded in reader-response theories, to deconstruct and analyze characters’ (and their own) experiences with death and dying using the contemporary young adult novel, We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. Rather than considering death and responses to death in concrete terms, death and grief are regarded as topics …

Plastron Pigmentation Variation In A Coastal Turtle Species Of Conservation Concern (Malaclemys Terrapin), Beth Reinke, Steven Pearson, Will Selman Dec 2017

Plastron Pigmentation Variation In A Coastal Turtle Species Of Conservation Concern (Malaclemys Terrapin), Beth Reinke, Steven Pearson, Will Selman

Beth Reinke

Malaclemys terrapin inhabits salt marshes of the coastal United States and has been historically divided into seven subspecies. Two of the described subspecies, M. t. pileata and M. t. littoralis, occur along the western and eastern coastlines of Louisiana, respectively. To better understand potential boundaries of these two subspecies, we documented pigmentation variation of the plastron along the coast of Louisiana where the subspecies supposedly intergrade. Photographs of the plastron were taken of captured individuals and we quantified pigment with a photoprocessing software (ImageJ). We found pigmentation differences between sexes, with females having lighter plastrons than males. The plastron pigmentation …

Publication Overlap: Building An Academic House With Salami Shingles, Christine Urbanowicz, Beth Reinke

Beth Reinke

Salami slicing, shingling, and meat extending are all fanciful terms for a thorny and often overlooked issue. Publication overlap—the presentation of redundant ideas or data in multiple papers by the same authors—is a practice that warrants serious discussion. When there is little to no publication overlap, the findings in one paper lead to new ideas and the collection of new data, producing a paper trail of scien- tific progress that moves the field forward (Fig. 1). At the other extreme, authors present the same text and data in two papers, which is usually a clear violation of journal copyright policies …

Between Kinship And Commerce: Fiduciaries And The Institutional Logics Of Family Firms, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington, Vanessa Strike Dec 2017

Between Kinship And Commerce: Fiduciaries And The Institutional Logics Of Family Firms, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington, Vanessa Strike

Brooke Harrington

In this study we explore how the institutions of kinship and commerce are integrated within family businesses.
Previous research shows that family firms’ characteristic synthesis of institutional logics often unravels during
intergenerational successions; however, it remains unclear how this process can be arrested, or by whom. Through
inductive analysis, we offer a novel insight: outside advisors can act as surrogates for family in this integrative
role. Specifically, we identify fiduciaries—professionals with special client obligations—as key actors in preserving
family firms’ viability as commercial enterprises and kinship groups. Our findings contribute to theories of family
businesses, professions, and institutions.

Making The Grade: Mentors’ Perspectives Of A Course-Based, Smart, Healthy Campus Pilot Project For Building Mental Health Resiliency Through Mentorship And Physical Activity, Rebecca R. Fried Phd, Shazya Karmali, Jennifer D. Irwin Phd, Francesca L. Gable, Alan Salmoni Dec 2017

Making The Grade: Mentors’ Perspectives Of A Course-Based, Smart, Healthy Campus Pilot Project For Building Mental Health Resiliency Through Mentorship And Physical Activity, Rebecca R. Fried Phd, Shazya Karmali, Jennifer D. Irwin Phd, Francesca L. Gable, Alan Salmoni

Jennifer D. Irwin

The purpose of this academic-year-long pilot study was to explore senior Kinesiology students’ (i.e., ‘mentors’; N = 30) experiences in an undergraduate course focused on building resilience among first- years via physical activity (PA) and mentorship. The psychosocial experiences of mentors were also tracked via qualitative interviews and validated questionnaires at pre-, mid-, and post-intervention. Inductive content analysis revealed mentors’ perspectives of the program’s positive influence on their PA, resilience, and mental health; and some added stressors. One-way, repeated-measures ANOVAs indicated few statistically significant findings over time regarding participants’ levels of: resilience [F(2, 54) = 8.82 , p < .05]; …

Exploring The Relationship Between Online Discourse And Commitment In Twitter Professional Learning Communities, Fei Gao Dec 2017

Exploring The Relationship Between Online Discourse And Commitment In Twitter Professional Learning Communities, Fei Gao

Fei Gao

Educators show great interest in participating in social-media communities, such as Twitter, to support their professional development and learning. The majority of the research into Twitter-based professional learning communities has investigated why educators choose to use Twitter for professional development and learning and what they actually do in these communities. However, few studies have examined why certain community members remain committed and others gradually drop out. To fill this gap in the research, this study investigated how some key features of online discourse influenced the continued participation of the members of a Twitter-based professional learning community. More than 600,000 tweets …

Introduction To Constraining The Executive, Tom Campbell Dec 2017

Introduction To Constraining The Executive, Tom Campbell

Tom Campbell

The essays in this symposium illuminate aspects of the task of keeping the executive branch within its constitutionally appointed boundaries. The symposium was conceived before the 2016 elections, so its plan was not directed toward the current president. Nevertheless, it is inescapable that, writing after those elections, the authors took recent developments into account. The lessons to be learned from these essays, however, have more permanent application than simply for the immediate present. In this introduction, I review the articles of the symposium hoping to highlight the valuable contribution to separation of powers jurisprudence that each offers for the long …

Sophia Leite: Researching The Interaction Between Humans And Computers, Darlene Cronetodd Dec 2017

Sophia Leite: Researching The Interaction Between Humans And Computers, Darlene Cronetodd

Darlene Crone-Todd

During the past two years, I had a wonderful opportunity to meet Sofie Leite through mutual colleagues. Ms. Leite is currently completing her PhD in Biomedical Engineering/Artificial Intelligence at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto in Portugal. She is a lead researcher on a project related to stacked neural networks at the
Dare Institute in Cambridge, MA. What struck me as most interesting about her past and current work is how the methodology she uses to investigate human-computer interactions mirrors that of the small N, within-subjects designs used in behavior analysis. As our discussions evolved, she graciously agreed to …

In Memoriam: Remembering Gerald “Jerry” Mertens, Darlene Cronetodd

Darlene Crone-Todd

There is much written about the history of behavior analysis, and of Jerry Mertens’ role in helping to establish the original Association for Behavior Analysis. The purpose of writing this piece is to provide an overview of my interactions with Jerry throughout the years of our friendship. In so doing, I hope to provide readers with a narrative of who he was, what he espoused, and what kinds of products he left behind.

On Terminology: Differential Reinforcement To Decrease Behavior, Darlene Cronetodd Dec 2017

On Terminology: Differential Reinforcement To Decrease Behavior, Darlene Cronetodd

Darlene Crone-Todd

When teaching the use of differential reinforcement schedules to reduce or eliminate behavior, students often struggle with the concepts. At first, I could not figure out why this was, as it seemed obvious that either reinforcing an incompatible or alternative behavior while concurrently placing a behavior to be reduced on extinction, would work. After all, as Skinner pointed out in Science and Human Behavior, differential reinforcement occurs naturally to select and to reinforce adaptive behaviors over maladaptive behaviors in sports, skills, and crafts. This also applies (whether intentionally or not) at the cultural level, and in educational control over various …

Spotlight On Gaslighting: A Behavior Analysis Of Unethical Behavior, Darlene Cronetodd Dec 2017

Spotlight On Gaslighting: A Behavior Analysis Of Unethical Behavior, Darlene Cronetodd

Darlene Crone-Todd

One term we hear more in our present society is “gaslighting”. This is a popular culture term related to the issue of power and control. The term was made popular by the 1944 movie, “Gaslight”. (Spoiler alert!) In this movie, Charles Boyer plays a scheming love interest to Ingrid Bergman. He originally killed her aunt for her jewels, but was unable to locate them after the murder. He gets away, but takes a long view to eventually obtain them. As part of his scheme, he systematically tracks Bergman’s character down, romances her into marriage, and then begins a campaign to …
