The German ideal of Bildung—the process of self-development through culture that Goethe dramatized in Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre—and its connection to the crises of Jewish emancipation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has been the topic of intense scholarly discussion. At issue is whether Bildung compromised Jewish identity. One of the earliest and strongest critics of Bildung was Hannah Arendt. Although Bildung was seen by many Jewish intellectuals, like Moses Mendelssohn, to be an answer to widespread anti-Judaism in European society, Arendt saw it as an apolitical concept that jeopardized Jewish emancipation in Europe. In 2005 the American Statistical Association (ASA) endorsed the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report. In 2010, the state of Tennessee embraced the call to overhaul teacher education and required programs to adopt a residency model within K-12 schools. How exactly this would affect the various methods courses in a teacher education program? This paper provides a description of how two elementary education methods courses have shifted from simulation-style projects to projects that involve working with actual elementary students throughout the semester. This article presents an overview of the new residency style methods courses, along with how major assignments shifted to utilize the extensive time pre-service teachers would spend in the elementary school classroom.

The personality types and learning styles of students have been studied across education populations, yet the research analyzing aviation students is lacking. A replication study assessed the distribution of personality types and learning styles of students enrolled in the aeronautical science baccalaureate degree program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Form M and the Kolb Learning Style Inventory (KLSI) were used to analyze the personality types and learning styles, respectively. States vary in standards for sex education, some requiring an emphasis on abstinence. Schools seek to identify curricula that reflect local community values and meet state standards. Choosing the Best (CTB), a classroom-based abstinence education curriculum, has been implemented in 75 Georgia school districts since 1995. CTB Inc., sought to determine if this popular program had an impact on abstinence attitudes, intentions, and behavior. Six Georgia public schools (1,143 ninth graders) participated in the study in 2009-2010. Four randomly assigned schools received the CTB curriculum, taught by trained CTB staff. Two control schools received their usual textbook-based abstinence lessons. Surveys …

The state of Kentucky has a high number of reported cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI), mostly attributed to motor vehicle crashes, falls, and being struck by or against an object. Young adults are among those most at-risk for experiencing a TBI through motor vehicle crushes. Using existing data from the Kentucky Post-School Outcomes Center ( KyPSO), 90 youth with TBI were identified within a period of 6 years of the longitudinal study (2012-2017). Service-Learning (SL) as an instructional method is growing in popularity for giving back to the community while connecting the experience to course content. However, little has been published on using SL for online business students. This study highlights an exploratory mixed-methods, multiple case study of an online business leadership and ethics course utilizing SL as a pedagogical teaching tool with 81 students. Results from the study noted that hours completed exceeded those assigned and students identified outcomes for themselves, their university, and nonprofit organizations where they served. In the last year of his presidency, President Barack Obama and his administration have undertaken many initiatives to ensure that formerly incarcerated individuals have more opportunities to successfully reenter society. At the same time, the administration has been working on education policy that closes the achievement gap and slows the endless flow of juveniles into the school-to-prison pipeline. While certainly laudable, there is much more that can be undertaken collaboratively among executive branch agencies to end the school-to-prison pipeline and the endless cycle of people re-entering the criminal justice system.

This study investigated the effectiveness of flipping a 400-level event management classroom and using the team-based learning approach. Student experience and beliefs about working in groups/teams were measured using pre- and post-surveys. Focus group discussions were used to investigate factors motivating students to do their pre-class preparation. Findings revealed that the mean scores for student experience were slightly higher in the pre-survey compared to the post-survey. Additionally, participants believed that they had experienced a teaching technique called team-based learning in other courses. Four main themes emerged from the discussions: 1) great instructor, 2) appropriate course materials, 3) good team members, …

Huntington’s Disease (HD) is rare neuro-degenerative disease that affects over 700 people in Ireland with a further 9,000 requiring information, support and care. Given the rarity of HD it appears that more education for healthcare professionals is needed. Without this education, people with HD may not receive the high quality care they require. Using the DMAIC framework for quality improvement (QI), this project investigated the need for HD education for healthcare staff in a voluntary mental health service in Dublin. According to the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, more than 46% of children across the U.S. have experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience or ACE.  Adverse Childhood Experiences can have detrimental, long-term effects on a child’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Becoming a trauma-informed school can change the negative outcomes for those students who have been impacted by traumatic events. The focus of this literature review will explore trauma-informed practices and frameworks currently being used in schools across the U.S.; and the benefits of using positive education paradigms that incorporate trauma-informed care within the educational setting.
