The Pariah And The Poet: Hannah Arendt’S Alternative Reading Of Goethe’S «Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre» As A Critique Of Enlightenment «Bildung», John Macready

John Macready

The German ideal of Bildung—the process of self-development through culture that Goethe dramatized in Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre—and its connection to the crises of Jewish emancipation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has been the topic of intense scholarly discussion. At issue is whether Bildung compromised Jewish identity. One of the earliest and strongest critics of Bildung was Hannah Arendt. Although Bildung was seen by many Jewish intellectuals, like Moses Mendelssohn, to be an answer to widespread anti-Judaism in European society, Arendt saw it as an apolitical concept that jeopardized Jewish emancipation in Europe. Arendt was skeptical of the …

Epic Adolescence: Contemporary Adolescence In Philip Pullman’S His Dark Materials, Chloe Felterman Dec 2018

Epic Adolescence: Contemporary Adolescence In Philip Pullman’S His Dark Materials, Chloe Felterman

Chloe Felterman

To find the truth of a societal construct or phenomena, it can help to look at the world of fiction and fantasy. Though this idea may seem ironic or counter-intuitive, one will find that fictional literature can reveal the working order of its respective society. Philip Pullman’s epic fantasy trilogy, His Dark Materials, uses and manipulates the traditional constructs of the genre to reflect and re-imagine the concepts of adolescence of the late-20th and early-21st centuries.  Eleven-year-old protagonist Lyra Belacqua and subsequently her cohort, Will Perry, reveal the complications and difficulties modern American and British adolescents experience as they progress …

Youth Activism, Art And Transitional Artist: Emerging Spaces Of Memory After The Jasmin Revolution, Arnaud Kurze Dec 2018

Youth Activism, Art And Transitional Artist: Emerging Spaces Of Memory After The Jasmin Revolution, Arnaud Kurze

Arnaud Kurze

This project explores the creation of alternative transitional justice spaces in post-conflict contexts, particularly concentrating on the role of art and the impact of social movements to address human rights abuses. Drawing from post-authoritarian Tunisia, it scrutinizes the work of contemporary youth activists and artists to deal with the past and foster sociopolitical change. Although these vanguard protesters provoked the overthrow of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, the power vacuum was quickly filled by old elites. The exclusion of young revolutionaries from political decision-making led to unprecedented forms of mobilization to account for repression and injustice under …

The Early History Of "Why Should We Idly Waste Our Prime"

Patrick Scott

Burns’S Reading Of Milton, Or How Big Was Burns’S Pocket?, Patrick Scott

Patrick Scott

Locates and describes a copy of Milton's Poetical Works with the ownership signature of Robert Burns, traces its provenance, and assesses the likelihood that it was the "pocket Milton" Burns told William Nicol in June 1787 that he had bought himself and carried with him "perpetually" to study "the dauntless magnanimity; the intrepid, unyielding independance; the desperate daring, and noble defiance of hardship, in that great Personage, Satan."

Bilge Nazli Altay

In recent years, traditional printing methods have been integrated to print flexible electronic devices and circuits. Since process requirements for electronics diff er from those for graphic printing, the fundamentals require rediscovery mainly to optimize manufacturing techniques and to find cost reduction methods without compromising functional performance. In addition, alternative inks need to be formulated to increase the variety of functional inks and to pioneer new product developments. In this report, we investigate a thermoplastic-based nickel ink prototype to print electrodes using a screen-printing process. Process fundamentals are explored, and cost reduction methods are addressed by studying …

Vita And Virginia: The Work And Friendship Of V. Sackville-West And Virginia Woolf, Suzanne Raitt Nov 2018

Vita And Virginia: The Work And Friendship Of V. Sackville-West And Virginia Woolf, Suzanne Raitt

Suzanne Raitt

This book examines the creative intimacy between Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf, interpreting both their relationship and their work in the light of their experience as married lesbians. The contradictions and conflicts of their situation are worked out through the construction of different narratives of femininity, in letters, novels, diaries, and other texts. Vita and Virginia looks at the two women's continual renegotiation of what it means to be female, and suggests that the mutual exchange of different versions of "womanhood" is crucial to the development of their friendship. Orlando, for example, was Virginia Woolf's way of threatening Sackville-West …

Teaching Passing As A Lesbian Text, Suzanne Raitt Nov 2018

Teaching Passing As A Lesbian Text, Suzanne Raitt

Suzanne Raitt

At the end of a semester teaching an upper-level course called Lesbian Literatures, I always ask students to talk about which texts they recommend keeping the next time I teach the course. They mostly love Virginia Woolf's Orlando; they usually dislike Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness, but they see why it should be in the course; and, almost to a person, they tell me I should drop Passing. It's not about lesbians, they complain; the lesbian interpretations we developed were far-fetched; the novel deals with racial passing, and not with passing as a heterosexual. In this essay, I explore …

Freud’S Theory Of Metaphor: Beyond The Pleasure Principle, Nineteenth-Century Science And Figurative Language, Suzanne Raitt Nov 2018

Freud’S Theory Of Metaphor: Beyond The Pleasure Principle, Nineteenth-Century Science And Figurative Language, Suzanne Raitt

Suzanne Raitt

At the beginning of the final lecture in Freud's 1933 publication, New Introductory Lectures on Psycho-Analysis, Freud declared summarily and triumphantly that psychoanalysis was a science. 'As a specialist science, a branch of psychology ... it is quite unfit to construct a Weltanschauung of its own: it must accept the scientific one.'1 This was a view he continued to stress as his career drew to a close. In 1940, seven years after the lecture on the Weltanschauung, he noted that psychology was ca natural science like any other', asking defiantly: (What else can it be?'2

11_18_2018 The Nexus Of Northwest Arkansas - Thesis By Chuck Davis.Pdf, Chuck Davis

Chuck Davis

My photographs are about power and place. Situated by context to a bygone era, Northwest Arkansas is now the illogical home of the world’s largest company.  Attendant economic and sociological forces are changing this rural area rapidly, as I examine effects upon the region and its residents – historical, contemporary, and transient.
With a narrative, neo-journalistic voice, I seek to convey new complexities to the state of Arkansas and specifically its northwest region. Postcards and placards react and reverse the popular shibboleth of a slow, rural sociotype – the Southern man, woman and family – which is at odds with …

Timing And Formation Of Linear Dunes South Of The Niobrara River Valley, North-Central Nebraska Sand Hills, Ashley Larsen Nov 2018

Timing And Formation Of Linear Dunes South Of The Niobrara River Valley, North-Central Nebraska Sand Hills, Ashley Larsen

Ashley Larsen

The Nebraska Sand Hills is a vast (7500 square kilometer) area of grass-stabilized sand dunes. Larger dunes in the Nebraska Sand Hills formed primarily during the Late Pleistocene, but many underwent widespread reactivation during the Holocene. Recent Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating indicates that the last major phase of reactivation in the Sand Hills was during the Medieval Warm Period, approximately 800 years ago. Nevertheless, many questions about the evolution of the dunes remain unanswered, particularly regarding the formation of linear dunes in portions of the Sand Hills.
This study seeks to understand more about the formation of linear dunes …
