State capture, corporate ownership structure, and institutional reform issues in Ethiopia[1]
(Working paper, incomplete)
Seid Hassan and Minga Negash[2]
Abstract: Examining the ownership structure and the methods of financing of companies provide important insights for the understanding of the type of institutional reforms in a given socio-economic environment. Much of the literature on corporate accountability in developing economies extends the legal and regulatory reforms done in richer nations and on codes provided by organized professions that in turn rely on virtue-centered ethics. More recently, the capture theory of regulation has been revisited by a number of …

Friends Of Walnut Avenue, Elena Owens Dec 2018

Friends Of Walnut Avenue, Elena Owens

Elena Owens

Walnut Avenue Family & Women’s Center (Walnut Avenue) is a nonprofit agency that provides services to women, children, and families in Santa Cruz County. Programs include domestic violence services, early childhood education, and youth engagement. To provide these services, Walnut Avenue depends heavily on restricted funds, but this can be an unstable revenue stream. If an unexpected cost arises, restricted funds designated to a specific program cannot be reappropriated to alleviate the expense. Losing a critical grant may also force an organization to make cuts in programs or staff, impacting the quality of services. In order to expand revenue sources …

A Decade Of Progress Toward Ending The Intensive Confinement Of Farm Animals In The United States, Sara Shields, Paul Shapiro, Andrew N. Rowan Dec 2018

A Decade Of Progress Toward Ending The Intensive Confinement Of Farm Animals In The United States, Sara Shields, Paul Shapiro, Andrew N. Rowan

Andrew N. Rowan, DPhil

In this paper, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) farm animal protection work over the preceding decade is described from the perspective of the organization. Prior to 2002, there were few legal protections for animals on the farm, and in 2005, a new campaign at the HSUS began to advance state ballot initiatives throughout the country, with a decisive advancement in California (Proposition 2) that paved the way for further progress. Combining legislative work with undercover farm and slaughterhouse investigations, litigation and corporate engagement, the HSUS and fellow animal protection organizations have made substantial progress in transitioning the …

The Elephant (Head) In The Room: A Critical Look At Trophy Hunting, Chelsea Batavia, Michael Paul Nelson, Chris T. Darimont, Paul C. Paquet, William J. Ripple, Arian D. Wallach Dec 2018

The Elephant (Head) In The Room: A Critical Look At Trophy Hunting, Chelsea Batavia, Michael Paul Nelson, Chris T. Darimont, Paul C. Paquet, William J. Ripple, Arian D. Wallach

Chelsea Batavia, PhD

Trophy hunting has occupied a prominent position in recent scholarly literature and popular media. In the scientific conservation literature, researchers are generally supportive of or sympathetic to its usage as a source of monetary support for conservation. Although authors at times acknowledge that trophy hunting faces strong opposition from many members of the public, often for unspecified reasons associated with ethics, neither the nature nor the implications of these ethical concerns have been substantively addressed. We identify the central act of wildlife “trophy” taking as a potential source of ethical discomfort and public opposition. We highlight that trophy hunting entails …

The 340b Program, Contract Pharmacies And Hospitals: An Examination Of The First 25 Years Of Their Increasingly Complex Relationship, David P. Paul Iii, Morgan Cathlene Ludado, Morgan Ruley, Hannah Sayre, Alberto Coustasse

Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH

The 340B Drug Pricing Program, created by Congress in 1992 through the Veterans Health Care Act, has provided discounted drug prices to hospitals and other health care organizations serving a wide population of low-income patients. Some 340B programs use contract pharmacies, an arrangement whereby the hospital or health care organization signs a contract directly with a pharmacy to provide covered pharmacy services at discounted prices.

The federal 340B Drug Pricing Program has provided access to reduced price prescription drugs to over 35,000 individual healthcare facilities and sites certified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and clinics …

Telepsychiatry: Access In Rural Areas, David P. Paul Iii, Brianna Washington, Annie Robinson, Mike Tonnie, Alberto Coustasse Dec 2018

Telepsychiatry: Access In Rural Areas, David P. Paul Iii, Brianna Washington, Annie Robinson, Mike Tonnie, Alberto Coustasse

Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH

Rural areas have experienced higher than average healthcare workforce problems, especially concerning limited access to mental health services. Telepsychiatry may provide at least a partial solution, as it has improved access and quality of care available in rural environments despite implementation problems. As technology continues to advance access, telepsychiatry will also need to strengthen making access more readily available. Additional research is required to identify modalities and diverse methods that can be used to increase access to mental health services further and improve outcomes in rural and underserved areas.

The Continuing Epidemic Of Hepatitis C In The United States: The Case Of West Virginia, David P. Paul Iii, Neha Botre, Maggie Phillips, Jumana Abboud, Alberto Coustasse

Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the most significant public health problems currently facing the U.S. If it is left untreated, the likelihood of sustaining a treatment response decreases. While early identification has been identified as a critical focus in trying to obtain better health outcomes, new drug treatments appear quite promising.

Do New Competitors, New Customers, New Suppliers, ... Sustain, Destroy Or Create Competitive Advantage?, Michael D. Ryall, Glenn Macdonald Dec 2018

Do New Competitors, New Customers, New Suppliers, ... Sustain, Destroy Or Create Competitive Advantage?, Michael D. Ryall, Glenn Macdonald

Michael D Ryall

We examine the effect of entry on the value appropriated by an incumbent. By ``entrant’’ we mean at any level of the value chain — from raw material suppliers to buyers. Our specific concern is whether competition guarantees the incumbent some positive minimum level of profit. We demonstrate that the net effect of entry is subtle — even when the entrant is a perfect imitator. On the one hand, entry typically results in greater value creation. This tends to soften competition and, thereby, lower the incumbent’s minimum level of appropriation. At the same time, however, entry also creates new competitive …

Cuba’S Historical Tryst With Economic Development And Future Pathways, Babu P. George, Tony L. Henthorne, Maximiliano E. Korstanje Prof Nov 2018

Cuba’S Historical Tryst With Economic Development And Future Pathways, Babu P. George, Tony L. Henthorne, Maximiliano E. Korstanje Prof

Babu George

This paper inspects the historical development of Cuba put against its challenges in promoting tourism. Due
to internal and external pressures, the economic development opportunities for Cuba were largely limited
to tourism – despite the best efforts by the Cuban authorities to diversify its economy. Drawing insights
from the strategy literature, the competitive advantage of Cuba in tourism is explained. We trace the
pathways the Cuban economy and society took in Cuba’s its tryst with tourism as the primary development
driver. Particular thrust is given to Cuba – Soviet bonhomie and the “special period”. We conclude the
discussion by highlighting …

Choosing The Right Kind Of Accreditation For A Business School: A Comparison Between Aacsb, Acbsp, And Iacbe, Babu P. George Nov 2018

Choosing The Right Kind Of Accreditation For A Business School: A Comparison Between Aacsb, Acbsp, And Iacbe, Babu P. George

Babu George

This paper offers a comparison of the accreditation standards of three CHEA and US Department of Education recognized business school program accreditation agencies - AACSB, ACBSP, and IACBE. It also discusses the relative challenges and benefits of achieving accreditation by these agencies. While the choice for business schools is often not very clear and is a long drawn negotiated process involving different interest groups, this paper will nevertheless offer some basis of comparison among the accreditation agencies. The author draws heavily from his own personal experiences leading accreditation efforts in various US based and international b-schools and proposes the merits …

Older Adults And The Authenticity Of Emails.Docx, Premankit Sannd, David M. Cook Nov 2018

Older Adults And The Authenticity Of Emails.Docx, Premankit Sannd, David M. Cook

Dr. David M Cook

Despite the variety of global research on the identification and proliferation of ransomware and other online scams, there is still a relative vacuum of research with respect to the problem of digitally and socially engineered deception in the form of ransomware on an individual. This is particularly problematic for older cohorts, where life experience in many endeavours sits alongside novice understanding and experience in the use of online technology. This paper examines the indicators that characterize authenticity and deception within ransomware and phishing. A survey of older Australian people over the age of 65 reveals markers and patterns that assist …

Macra And Rural Hospitals, Erica Kelley, Rhea Lipscomb, Jennifer Valdez, Alberto Coustasse Nov 2018

Macra And Rural Hospitals, Erica Kelley, Rhea Lipscomb, Jennifer Valdez, Alberto Coustasse

Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH

The purpose of this research was to study MACRA (Medicare Access & CHIP Reauthorization Act) and to determine how its implementation would financially impact rural hospitals. Although the long-term effects of MACRA have not been able to be studied, MACRA has the prospective to negatively impact rural hospitals financially. MACRA has potential risks and benefits for physicians associated with its two reimbursement payment methods. The estimated negative reimbursements and set reductions to hospital reimbursement have supported the idea that physicians and all healthcare organizations need to be aware and prepared for MACRA.

Hospital Nurse Burnout: A Continuing Problem, David P. Paul Iii, Lama Bakhamis, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Alberto Coustasse

Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH

RNs are a critically important component of the U.S. healthcare system. RN burnout – the feeling of exhaustion from working long hours without rest – is a real concern, having been reported in many hospitals. We examine the background, causes and consequences of burnout among RNs in U.S. hospitals, in order to identify solutions to this problem. Findings indicate that Burnout Syndrome in RNs can be analyzed in terms of four clusters of characteristics: individual, management, organizational, and work. The consequences of burnout include increased RN turnover rates, poor job performance, and threats to patient safety. RN burnout in hospitals …

Organizational Responsiveness To Anti-Offshoring Institutional Pressures, Shaji Ahmed Khan Nov 2018

Organizational Responsiveness To Anti-Offshoring Institutional Pressures, Shaji Ahmed Khan

Shaji Khan

This study explores the extent to which organizations are responsive to pressures from institutional constituents against offshoring of information technology and business processes. Drawing on a theoretical framework that integrates institutional and strategic explanations, it proposes that organizational responsiveness to anti-offshoring institutional pressures is a function of both the characteristics of such pressures as well as organizations’ prior success with offshoring. Results based on moderated hierarchical multiple regression analyses on survey data from 84 offshoring client organizations indicate the following. First, both greater organizational expectations of enhanced social legitimacy obtained from compliance and mimetic influences from other organizations led to …

Top Management Support, Collective Mindfulness, And Information Systems Performance, Shaji A. Khan, Albert L. Lederer, Dinesh A. Mirchandani Nov 2018

Top Management Support, Collective Mindfulness, And Information Systems Performance, Shaji A. Khan, Albert L. Lederer, Dinesh A. Mirchandani

Shaji Khan

Mindfulness is a cognitive process that facilitates the discovery and correction of errors that might escalate. This study applies mindfulness theory to examine the impact of top management support for information systems on collective mindfulness, and that of collective mindfulness on IS performance. It treated such mindfulness in five dimensions, and top management support and IS performance as uni-dimensional. Forty-seven chief executive officers responded to a survey asking their perceptions of the constructs. Top management support predicted four of the dimensions with the strongest effect on sensitivity to IS operations. A negative path from support to commitment to IS resilience …

Tackling Undeclared Work In The Agricultural Sector, Colin C. Williams Nov 2018

Tackling Undeclared Work In The Agricultural Sector, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

This study evaluates the prevalence, distribution and characteristics of undeclared work in the agricultural, forestry and fishing sector (henceforth ‘agricultural sector’) in the EU and how this can be tackled. To do so, the prevalence, distribution and characteristics of undeclared work in the agricultural sector, along with its systemic drivers, are analysed. This analysis then provides the evidence base for an analysis of how undeclared work can be tackled. To identify how to achieve this, an analysis is undertaken of the legislative and institutional frameworks, of the policy approaches for tackling undeclared work in the agricultural sector, and an evidence-based …

The Managed Body: Developing Girls & Menstrual Health In The Global South Oct 2018

The Managed Body: Developing Girls & Menstrual Health In The Global South

Chris Bobel

The Managed Body productively complicates ‘menstrual hygiene management’ (MHM)--a growing social movement to support menstruating girls in the Global South. Bobel offers an invested critique of the complicated discourses of MHM including its conceptual and practical links with the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) development sector, human rights and ‘the girling of development.’ Drawing on analysis of in-depth interviews, participant observations and the digital materials of NGOs and social businesses, Bobel shows how MHM frames problems and solutions to capture attention and direct resources to this highly-tabooed topic. She asserts that MHM organizations often inadvertently rely upon weak evidence and …

Research Methodologies And The Field Of Decision Analysis.Pdf, Jeffrey Keisler

Jeffrey Keisler

This presentation considers three questions. (1) What is a research methodology as opposed to any old methodology and what is the role of research methodologies in scholarship? (2) In what ways do and in what ways can decision analysis scholars incorporate common research methodologies? (3) How and why might we think of decision analysis itself as a research methodology?

Turning Vice Into Virtue: Institutional Work And Professional Misconduct, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington Oct 2018

Turning Vice Into Virtue: Institutional Work And Professional Misconduct, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington

Brooke Harrington

Why do professionals engage in or aid misconduct, rather than rejecting it as a threat to their legitimacy and labor market survival? This paper contributes to the scholarly agenda by drawing on an ethnographic study of professionals who facilitate offshore tax avoidance for the ultra-wealthy. This form of expert advisory work has become highly controversial, and is increasingly classified as a form of professional wrongdoing.  Building on theories of institutional work and categorization, the study theorizes practitioners’ responses to field-level legitimacy threats. Specifically, the paper models a process in which misconduct is re-categorized in terms of the core norms that …

Explaining And Tackling Under-Declared Employment In Fyr Macedonia: The Employers Perspective, Colin C. Williams, Slavko Bezeredi Oct 2018

Explaining And Tackling Under-Declared Employment In Fyr Macedonia: The Employers Perspective, Colin C. Williams, Slavko Bezeredi

Colin C Williams

The aim of this paper is to evaluate how employers who illegally under-report their employees’ salaries to
evade paying the full tax and social contributions owed can be explained and tackled. These employers have
been conventionally explained as rational economic actors doing so when the benefits outweigh the costs,
and thus the solution is to increase the sanctions and/or probability of detection. An alternative social actor
approach, however, explains employers as under-reporting salaries because of their lack of both vertical trust
(i.e., their beliefs are not in symmetry with the laws and regulations) and horizontal trust (i.e., they believe
many …

Bachelor Thesis .Docx, Blerina Jashari

Blerina Jashari

Taking into account that Kosovo is a developing country, revenues coming from other countries play an important
role. The paper will present a clear picture that examines the level of remittances in the country as well as external countries. In
addition to the level of remittances, a literature review will also be made regarding the methodology used. Remittances received
in Kosovo, which also represent the largest category within the secondary income account, amounted to euro 568.8 million in
September 2015, representing an annual growth of 12.5 percent. One of the reasons why a remittance study is done is to identify …

Tackling Under-Declared Employment In The European Union: Input Paper To Thematic Discussion Of European Platform Tackling Undeclared Work, Colin C. Williams Oct 2018

Tackling Under-Declared Employment In The European Union: Input Paper To Thematic Discussion Of European Platform Tackling Undeclared Work, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

The under-declaration of work ranges from employers using unregistered employees, through the under-declaration of income by the formal self-employed and formal businesses, to the misuse of collaborative platforms and the digital economy to conceal the full amount of incomes and social security due.
The objective of this thematic discussion on under-declared employment in the European Union is: (i) to exchange information on what works and what does not, (ii) to generate knowledge about under-declared employment, and (iii) to explore how the Platform activities can contribute to tackling under-declared employment.
The intention is to focus upon two types of under-declaring work: …

Evaluating Policy Approaches Towards Undeclared Work: Some Lessons From Fyr Of Macedonia, Colin C. Williams Oct 2018

Evaluating Policy Approaches Towards Undeclared Work: Some Lessons From Fyr Of Macedonia, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

To tackle undeclared work, the conventional rational economic actor approach
uses deterrents to ensure that the costs of engaging in undeclared work outweigh
the benefits. Recent years have seen the emergence of a social actor approach
which focuses upon improving tax morale. To analyse the association between
participation in undeclared work and these policy approaches, 2,014 face-toface
interviews, conducted in FYROM in 2015, are reported. Logistic regression
analysis reveals no association between participation in undeclared work and the
perceived level of penalties and risk of detection, but there is an association with
the level of tax morale. The paper concludes …

Why Do We Learn What We Learn? The Intersection Of Leadership And Learning In Aviation Environments, Kadie Mullins Oct 2018

Why Do We Learn What We Learn? The Intersection Of Leadership And Learning In Aviation Environments, Kadie Mullins

Kadie Hayward Mullins

Why do we learn what we learn? Teach what we teach? Train how we train? Largely, decisions regarding instruction and training in aviation environments are dictated by leadership. Industry CEOs beliefs on professional development, organization culture inspired by leadership, and the instructors’ personal leadership philosophies create specific learning schema while legislation, credentialing agencies, and public policies provide mandates surrounding licensing and certifications. This paper will explore the contexts and concepts in which learning and leading intersect and the impacts of those intersections on learner outcomes and instructional planning. Exploring pertinent historical, societal, philosophical, and psychological factors that guide instruction and …
