An extremely non-degenerate two photon absorption (END-2PA) method and apparatus provide for irradiating a semiconductor material substrate simultaneously with two photons each of different energy less than a bandgap energy of the semiconductor material substrate but in an aggregate greater than the bandgap energy of the semiconductor material substrate. A ratio of a higher energy photon energy to a lower energy is at least about 3.0. Alternatively, or as an adjunct, the higher energy and the lower energy photon has an energy no greater than about 25% of the bandgap energy.

The invention comprises an improved system, method, and computer-readable instructions for recognizing pose and action of articulated objects with collection of planes in motion. The method starts with a video sequence and a database of reference sequences corresponding to different known actions. The method identifies the sequence from the reference sequences such that the subject in performs the closest action to that observed. The method compares actions by comparing pose transitions. The cross-homography invariant may be used for view-invariant recognition of human body pose transition and actions.

Recent invention of longitudinally chirped volume Bragg gratings has dramatically changed a design of high power femtosecond lasers. Replacing of bulky pairs of conventional surface gratings with compact and robust chirped volume Bragg gratings for stretching and compression of laser pulses in chirped-pulse-amplification systems enabled decrease of size and weight of those systems by several times. This patent application enables substantial increase of stretching time and compression to shorter pulses along with more complex shaping of laser pulses in both temporal and spectral domains.

Imported from Disclosure: A novel mechanocatalytic oxidation process has been developed. This process allows relatively benign oxygen sources (such as air and hydrogen peroxide) to be used for the production of aldehydes and oxocarboxylic acids from mono and polyunsaturated carboxylic acids derived from plant oils. The catalysts utilized are also environmentally benign. The aldehydes produced by this method can be used to improve the low temperature properties of bio-fuels and for the production of flavorings from bio-oils. The oxocarboxylic acids produced can be utilized for electrolytic hydrogen production, precursor materials for polymers, or in the production of commodity chemicals.
