Apparatus And Method For Photocatalytic Conditioning Of Flue Gas Fly-Ash Particles, Ali Raissi, Nazim Muradov, Peter Peng

UCF Patents

A process for the in-situ transformation of chemical species present in the flue gas to form sulfur trioxide, wherein the fly-ash particles are conditioned by altering their surface electrical properties. More specifically, the subject invention is concerned with fly ash conditioning using plural lamps located at specific positions in a specific arrangements most advantageous to the chemical conversion that would take place. The novel invention conditions flue gas emissions by treating the flue gas with SO.sub.3, where the SO.sub.3 is generated in the flue gas by photocatalytic conversion of SO.sub.2 using selectively spaced and arranged ultra violet light emitting lamps …

Method Of Time-Resolving Fourier-Transform Spectroscopy To Allow Interferogram Sampling At Unevenly Spaced Path Length Differences, Robert Peale, Henry Weidner

UCF Patents

A low cost method of adding time-resolving capability to commercial Fourier-transform spectrometers with a continuously scanning Michelson interferometer. This invention is specifically designed to eliminate noise and artifacts caused by mirror-speed variations in the interferometer. The method exists as two parts: 1) a novel timing scheme for synchronizing the transient events under study with the digitizing by an analog-to-digital converter, and 2) a mathematical algorithm for extracting the spectral information from the recorded data. The novel timing scheme is a modification of the well known interleaved, or stroboscopic, method. It achieves the same timing accuracy, signal-to-noise ratio, and freedom from …

Face Detection Using Templates, Niels Da Vitoria Lobo, Young Ho Kwon Nov 1998

Face Detection Using Templates, Niels Da Vitoria Lobo, Young Ho Kwon

UCF Patents

Disclosed is a two step process for automatically finding a human face in an electronically digitized image (for example, taken by handheld digital cameras and digital video-cameras such as cam-corders), and for confirming the existence of the face by examining facial features. Step 1 is to detect the human face and is accomplished in stages that include enhancing the digital image with a blurring filter and edge enhancer in order to better set forth the unique facial features such as wrinkles, and curved shapes of a facial image. After prefiltering, preselected curves sometimes referred to as snakelets are dropped on …

Hydrogen Enriched Natural Gas As A Motor Fuel With Variable Air Fuel Ratio And Fuel Mixture Ratio Control (Div Of 6637 And Cip Of 7863), R. K. Collier, Douglas Hahn, Robert Hoekstra, David Mulligan Aug 1998

Hydrogen Enriched Natural Gas As A Motor Fuel With Variable Air Fuel Ratio And Fuel Mixture Ratio Control (Div Of 6637 And Cip Of 7863), R. K. Collier, Douglas Hahn, Robert Hoekstra, David Mulligan

UCF Patents

A hydrogen and natural gas fuel mixture for internal combustion engines is provided for vehicle engines such as those used in standard production engines for automobiles, trains and lawn mowers. The gaseous fuel for operating a vehicle combustion engines includes approximately 21 to 50% Hydrogen and the rest natural gas constituents such as combinations of Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, Ethane, Propane, Iso-Butane, N-Butane, Iso Pentane, N-Pentane, and Hexanes Plus. A fuel mixture of approximately 28 to 36 percent Hydrogen and a air fuel equivalence ratio of approximately 0.625 is an extreme lean burn condition that yields hydrocarbon emission levels of …

Bulk Semiconductor Lasers At Submillimeter/Far Infrared Wavelengths Using A Regular Permanent Magnet, Robert Peale, Jin Kim, Kijun Park Jul 1998

Bulk Semiconductor Lasers At Submillimeter/Far Infrared Wavelengths Using A Regular Permanent Magnet, Robert Peale, Jin Kim, Kijun Park

UCF Patents

A p-Ge laser operating at submillimeter wavelengths in Voigt configuration using a regular permanent magnet. The invention is improvement over prior art Ge Lasers which use superconducting magnets that require liquid helium to cool the magnets along with the Ge crystal. Although the subject invention requires cooling(refrigerant) of the Ge crystal itself, it does not need liquid helium. The permanent magnet can be Nd.sub.2 Fe.sub.14 B. The emissions using the novel invention were observed over a wider range of electric-field magnitude in Voigt configuration at a given magnetic field as compared to that of the prior system. The free space …

Automatic Feature Detection And Age Classification Of Human Faces In Digital Images, Niels Da Vitoria Lobo, Young Kwon Jul 1998

Automatic Feature Detection And Age Classification Of Human Faces In Digital Images, Niels Da Vitoria Lobo, Young Kwon

UCF Patents

This invention includes a four step process for automatically finding facial images of a human face in an electronically digitized image (for example, taken by a video-camera) and classifying the age of the person (associated with the face) into an age category.

Photocatalytic Face Mask, Ali Raissi, Philip Fairey, Nazim Muradov Apr 1998

Photocatalytic Face Mask, Ali Raissi, Philip Fairey, Nazim Muradov

UCF Patents

Methods of destroying toxic volatile air-borne toxins are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a piece of formaldehyde laden substrate(wood) such as paneling and furniture is treated with TiO.sub.2 solution to form a thin and translucent veneer on the surface. This layer acts like a membrane preventing outward transport of formaldehyde and other harmful compounds produced by weatherization and natural degradation of the substrate. In a prefered embodiment the photocatalytic destruction of formaldehyde is achieved. Other toxins destroyed include terpenes and other types of toxic volatile organic compounds(VOCs). While the prefered embodiment is applied to wood based supports such as paneling …

Touch-Off Probe., Kenneth Beck Apr 1998

Touch-Off Probe., Kenneth Beck

UCF Patents

This invention related to probe sensing apparatus, and in particular to a method and apparatus for detecting pre-contract between a grinding tool such as a laser, and optics work piece using acoustical emission and detection.

An optional tuning component such as a Pockels Cell-Polarizer combination …

Compact Optical Controller For Phased Array Systems, Nabeel Riza Mar 1998

Compact Optical Controller For Phased Array Systems, Nabeel Riza

UCF Patents

A compact free-space/solid optics phased array antenna/transducer optical controller is disclosed that uses the principle of in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) vector modulation via two dimensional (2-D) spatial light modulators (SLMs). The SLMs are used as distributed optical gain/amplitude control devices. The system can be fed by four independent lasers where one pair of lasers must be mutually incoherent (or their beat frequency is not in the interested spectrum) with the other pair of lasers. These lasers are modulated (directly or externally) by separate forms (different phase shifts: 0, 90, 180, 270) of the input source signal/modulated radio frequency (rf) …

Photonically Controlled Ultrasonic Probes, Nabeel Riza

UCF Patents

Wavelength diversity coupled with fiber-based time delay, optical energy delivery, and ultrasonic energy sensing, are proposed to form a novel, rapidly tunable (e.g., 1 Khz-100 Mhz) and wide instantaneous bandwidth (e.g., >50% bandwidth at center carrier), ultrasonic probe system for therapy, diagnostics, and non-invasive surgery, particularly for intracavity operation with a typical 100 channel/transducer element count. This ultrasonic system architecture is a multi-wavelength optical delay line module using two high speed (i.e.,time), bulk acousto-optic tunable filters, that provide collinear, high power, multi-wavelength optical input and output beams. This wavelength selection module also provides high optical throughput (e.g., 90% efficiency) and …
