Photonic arbitrary waveform methods and generation by manipulating the phase-locked longitudinal modes of an approximately 12.4 GHz fundamentally modelocked external-cavity semiconductor laser are demonstrated. Photonically synthesized sine waves (center frequency of approximately 37.2 GHz, linewidth less than approximately 100 Hz, dynamic range approximately 50 dB at approximately 100 Hz resolution bandwidth) and complex, arbitrarily shaped optical/microwave frequency waveforms with instantaneous bandwidths up to approximately 75 GHz are shown. A WDM filter can be used to separate individual longitudinal modes of a modelocked laser. This invention relates to a novel process for sustainable CO.sub.2 -free production of hydrogen and carbon by thermocatalytic decomposition (or dissociation, pyrolysis, cracking) of hydrocarbon fuels over carbon-based catalysts in the absence of air and/or water. The process is applicable to any hydrocarbon fuel, including sulfurous fuels. Combination of a catalytic reactor with a gas separation unit allows to produce high purity hydrogen (at least, 99.0 v %) completely free of carbon oxides. In a preferred embodiment, sustainable continuous production of hydrogen and carbon is achieved by both internal and external activation of carbon catalysts. Single-stripe GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor optical amplifiers which simultaneously generates from four to more than twenty tunable WDM channels. A four channel version trsnsmits approximately 12 picosecond pulses at approximately 2.5 GHz for an aggregate pulse rate of 100 GHz. Wavelength tuning over 18 nm has been demonstrated with channel spacing ranging from approximately 0.8 nm to approximately 2 nm. A two and three dimensional display based on up conversion of near infrared light to the visible. The display medium is a transparent polymer containing particles of crystals doped with Yb.sup.3+ and other rare earth ions. Hydrogen is produced via thermocatalytic decomposition (cracking, pyrolysis) of hydrocarbon fuels in oxidant-free environment. The apparatus can utilize a variety of hydrocarbon fuels, including natural gas, propane, gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, crude oil (including sulfurous fuels). One-stage power factor correction (PFC) with output electrical isolation. Two types of PFC converters are proposed here: 1) Multi stage capacitive-switching network low voltage PFC converter and 2) two-switch soft switching PFC converters. This resulted in a near unity power factor AC-DC converter with low voltage output. The second converter uses the power switch in combination with a grounded auxiliary switch to produce soft-switching converter to operate in high switching frequencies. A novel process is proposed for the volume diffractive element (Bragg grating) fabrication in photosensitive silicate glasses doped with silver, cerium, fluorine, and bromine. The process employs a photo-thermo-refractive (PTR) glass of high purity exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation of a He--Cd laser at 325 nm followed by thermal development at temperatures from 480.degree. C. to 580.degree. C., preferably at 520.degree. C., from several minutes to several hours. Absolute diffraction efficiency up to 95% was observed for 1 mm thick gratings. Prostasin protein has been found to be a useful marker for determination of the invasiveness of and as a means to treat human carcinomas. Using RT-PCR and western blot analyses, prostasin protein and mRNA expression were found in normal human prostate epithelial cells and the human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP, but not in the highly invasive human prostate cancer cell lines DU-145 and PC-3. Imunohistochemistry studies of human prostate cancer specimens revealed a down-regulation of prostasin in high-grade tumors. A long wavelength infrared laser system is disclosed where radiation from laser sources such as frequency-doubled Nd:YAG or a Cr:LiSAF is used to resonantly pump a gain medium consisting of a holmium-doped fluoride crystal having a high active ion concentration. The laser pump source has a pulse duration that may be short enough to gain switch a particular transition or long enough to allow end-pumping with high energy densities without damage.
