There is presented a Vector Quantization technique in multiple nonorthogonal domains for both waveform and model based signal characterization. An iterative codebook accuracy enhancement algorithm, applicable to both waveform and model based Vector Quantization in multiple nonorthogonal domains, which yields further improvement in signal coding performance, is disclosed. A novel nematic liquid crystal (LC) mode is based on the Fringing-Field-Switching of Vertically-Aligned liquid crystals. The VA-FFS mode is capable of generating very fast optical modulation without the use of very thin cell gap. IA major feature of this LC mode is that it has unusual fast relaxation time compared with the conventional nematic LC modes that require a thin cell gap. This fast relaxation occurs even at very low applied voltages and the operation is very stable. Image formation via photoinduced fluorescence changes in a polymeric medium with two-photon fluorescence readout of a multi-layer structure. Fluorophore-containing polymers, possessing one or more basic functional groups, underwent protonation in the presence of a photoinduced acid generator upon exposure to a broad-band UV light source or fast-pulsed red to near-IR laser irradiation. Solution studies demonstrated formation of monoprotonated and diprotonated species upon irradiation, each resulting in distinctly different absorption and fluorescence properties. The fluorescence of the original, neutral, fluorophore was reduced upon monoprotonation, leading to a concomitant increase in fluorescence at longer wavelengths due to the monoprotonated form, the basis …

Novel, monodispersed, spherical ZrO.sub.2 particles in the size range of approximately 10 to approximately 600 nm exhibiting metastable tetragonal crystal structure at room temperature and novel methods of preparation. The ZrO.sub.2 particles are approximately 100% in the tetragonal phase at room temperature and can be pure and free of foreign oxides. The novel method can include mixing zirconium-alkoxide and an alcohol, forming preparation one, followed by separately dissolving completely de-ionized water and a polymeric steric stabilizer in an alcohol forming preparation two. The methodology is based upon gene expresiion profiling analysis in which specific age groups are identified by detecting the relative quantity of expression of appropriate mRNA species. Emulsified systems of a surfactant-stabilized, biodegradable water-in-solvent emulsion with bimetallic particles contained with the emulsion droplets are useful at removing PCBs from ex situ structures. The hydrophobic emulsion system draws PCBs through the solvent/surfactant membrane. Once inside the membrane, the PCBs diffuse into the bimetallic particles and undergo degradation. The PCBs continue to enter, diffuse, degrade, and biphenyl will exit the particle maintaining a concentration gradient across the membrane and maintaining a driving force of the reaction.

Twisted blades for outdoor air conditioner condensers and heat pumps that improve airflow efficiency to minimize operating power requirements. The blades can run at approximately 850 rpm to produce approximately 1930 cfm of air flow using approximately 110 Watts of power from an 8-pole motor with an improved diffuser assembly. Using an OEM 6-pole 1/8 hp motor produced approximately 2610 cfm with approximately 145 Watts of power while running the blades at approximately 1100 rpm. A novel transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) is provided with a multilayer dielectric film transflector. The dielectric transflector is composed of alternating high and low refractive index dielectric material layers deposited directly on the inner side of the LCD substrate to avoid parallax. The transmittance of the dielectric transflector can vary from approximately 5% to approximately 95% by simply adjusting the individual dielectric layer thickness and the arrangement of layers.
