This paper presents BigDAWG, a reference implementation of a new architecture for “Big Data” applications. Such applications not only call for large-scale analytics, but also for real-time streaming support, smaller analytics at interactive speeds, data visualization, and cross-storage-system queries. Guided by the principle that “one size does not fit all”, we build on top of a variety of storage engines, each designed for a specialized use case. To illustrate the promise of this approach, we demonstrate its effectiveness on a hospital application using data from an intensive care unit (ICU). This complex application serves the needs of doctors and researchers …

Corliss, Stephen Merrill, Dickson W. Lwetoijera, Gregor J. Devine, Silas Majambere, Gerry F. Killeen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Large-cage experiments indicate pyriproxifen (PPF) can be transferred from resting sites to aquatic habitats by Anopheles arabiensis - malaria vector mosquitoes to inhibit emergence of their own offspring. PPF coverage is amplified twice: (1) partial coverage of resting sites with PPF contamination results in far higher contamination coverage of adult mosquitoes because they are mobile and use numerous resting sites per gonotrophic cycle, and (2) even greater contamination coverage of aquatic habitats results from accumulation of PPF from multiple oviposition events.

Methods and Findings

Deterministic mathematical models are described that use only field-measurable input parameters and capture the biological …

Modular Timing Constraints For Delay-Insensitive Systems, Hoon Park, Anping He, Marly Roncken, Xiaoyu Song, Ivan Sutherland

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper introduces ARCtimer, a framework for modeling, generating, verifying, and enforcing timing constraints for individual self-timed handshake components. The constraints guarantee that the component’s gate-level circuit implementation obeys the component’s handshake protocol specification. Because the handshake protocols are delayinsensitive, self-timed systems built using ARCtimer-verified components are also delay-insensitive. By carefully considering time locally, we can ignore time globally. ARCtimer comes early in the design process as part of building a library of verified components for later system use. The library also stores static timing analysis (STA) code to validate and enforce the component’s constraints in any self-timed system built …

Design Disjunction For Resilient Reconfigurable Hardware, Ahmad Alzahrani 2015 University of Central Florida

Design Disjunction For Resilient Reconfigurable Hardware, Ahmad Alzahrani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary reconfigurable hardware devices have the capability to achieve high performance, power efficiency, and adaptability required to meet a wide range of design goals. With scaling challenges facing current complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS), new concepts and methodologies supporting efficient adaptation to handle reliability issues are becoming increasingly prominent. Reconfigurable hardware and their ability to realize self-organization features are expected to play a key role in designing future dependable hardware architectures. However, the exponential increase in density and complexity of current commercial SRAM-based field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) has escalated the overhead associated with dynamic runtime design adaptation. Traditionally, static modular …

Agent-Based And System Dynamics Hybrid Modeling And Simulation Approach Using Systems Modeling Language, Asli Soyler Akbas 2015 University of Central Florida

Agent-Based And System Dynamics Hybrid Modeling And Simulation Approach Using Systems Modeling Language, Asli Soyler Akbas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Agent-based (AB) and system dynamics (SD) modeling and simulation techniques have been studied and used by various research fields. After the new hybrid modeling field emerged, the combination of these techniques started getting attention in the late 1990's. Applications of using agent-based (AB) and system dynamics (SD) hybrid models for simulating systems have been demonstrated in the literature. However, majority of the work on the domain includes system specific approaches where the models from two techniques are integrated after being independently developed. Existing work on creating an implicit and universal approach is limited to conceptual modeling and structure design. This …

An Embodied Approach To Evolving Robust Visual Classifiers, Karol Zieba 2015 University of Vermont

An Embodied Approach To Evolving Robust Visual Classifiers, Karol Zieba

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

From the very creation of the term by Czech writer Karel Capek in 1921, a "robot" has been synonymous with an artificial agent possessing a powerful body and cogitating mind. While the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics have made progress into the creation of such an android, the goal of a cogitating robot remains firmly outside the reach of our technological capabilities. Cognition has proved to be far more complex than early AI practitioners envisioned. Current methods in Machine Learning have achieved remarkable successes in image categorization through the use of deep learning. However, when presented with novel …

Control Of Oxygen Excess Ratio In A Pem Fuel Cell System Using High-Order Sliding-Mode Controller And Observer, Seyed Mehdi Rakhtala, Abolfazl Ranjbar Noei, Reza Ghaderi, Elio Usai

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The main objective of this manuscript is to design a high-order sliding-mode observer to provide finite time estimation of unmeasurable states (x_4: oxygen mass, x_5: nitrogen mass) together with the oxygen excess ratio (ratio of the input oxygen flow to the reacted oxygen flow in the cathode). This is done by applying second-order sliding modes through either super twisting or suboptimal controllers to control the proton exchange membrane fuel cell's breathing. The estimated oxygen excess ratio is controlled in a closed-loop system using 2 distinct sliding-mode approaches: a cascaded super twisting controller and a single-loop suboptimal structure. Simulation results are …

A Comparative Performance Evaluation Of Various Approaches For Liver Segmentation From Spir Images, EVGİN GÖÇERİ, MEHMET ZÜBEYİR ÜNLÜ, OĞUZ DİCLE 2015 TÜBİTAK

A Comparative Performance Evaluation Of Various Approaches For Liver Segmentation From Spir Images, Evgi̇n Göçeri̇, Mehmet Zübeyi̇r Ünlü, Oğuz Di̇cle

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Developing a robust method for liver segmentation from magnetic resonance images is a challenging task because of the similar intensity values between adjacent organs, the geometrically complex liver structure, and injection of contrast media. Most importantly, a high anatomical variability of a healthy or diseased liver is a major challenge in defining the exact boundaries of the liver. Several artifacts of pulsation, motion, and partial volume effects are also among the variety of factors that make automatic liver segmentation difficult. In this paper, we present an overview of liver segmentation methods in magnetic resonance images and show comparative results of …

Energy Management Of Solar Car In Circuit Race, ERKAN ATMACA 2015 TÜBİTAK

Energy Management Of Solar Car In Circuit Race, Erkan Atmaca

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This study develops an optimal driving strategy for solar car on a track with nonzero gradients and sharp corners. This strategy consists of finding the racing line and the speed profile that minimizes the lap time with a given amount of energy. The problem is formulated in proper form for a commercial nonlinear optimization software program. The track is modeled into segments identified by their spatial coordinates on its own surface. The speed-distance behavior of the vehicle is linearized at each segment. The constraints set by the brushless DC motor, battery, and circuit are formulated accordingly. This is the motor …

Exact Solution Of Conducting Half Plane Problems In Terms Of A Rapidly Convergent Series And An Application Of The Multiplicative Calculus, ALİ UZER 2015 TÜBİTAK

Exact Solution Of Conducting Half Plane Problems In Terms Of A Rapidly Convergent Series And An Application Of The Multiplicative Calculus, Ali̇ Uzer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The problem of cylindrical wave incidence on a conducting half plane has been considered. A modal solution for Green's function of the problem is transformed into contour integral representations in a complex plane. Some contour deformations and changes of variables are then made for the integrals. Finally, the resultant integrals are transformed back into a series, which converges rapidly to the exact solution when the observation angles are close to the reflection/shadow boundaries (RSBs) of the conducting half plane. The multiplicative calculus is employed in deriving an expression that can be used for obtaining approximate solutions when the observation angles …

Optimization Of Electrical Power Transmission Lines'' Routing Using Ahp, Fuzzy Ahp, And Gis, Hasan Eroğlu, Musa Aydin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

With the increase of people's need for energy, electrical energy transmission has become a very important issue as well as electrical power generation. One of the most important problems in energy transmission is finding the best route in a very complex study area. To date, many people from different disciplines have come together to find the best routes by manual methods like using paper maps and deciding which route is the least-cost path (LCP) to the destination point. Today it is known that, in engineering problems, and especially in path-finding or site-placing problems, the Geographic Information System (GIS) is the …

Prescient: A Predictive Channel Access Schemefor Ieee 802.15.4-Compliant Devices Considering Ieee 802.11 Coexistence, Tolga Çöplü, Sema Fatma Oktuğ

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Coexistence is among the most significant challenges for IEEE 802.15.4-compliant devices in indoor environments. Previous works have shown that IEEE 802.11-compliant devices are the major sources of interference in the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical band. In order to overcome the coexistence problem, IEEE 802.15.4-compliant devices should monitor the communication channel and access the channel when it is not in use. In this study, the impact of IEEE 802.11 traffic on IEEE 802.15.4 communication is analyzed and a novel predictive channel access scheme, PRESCIENT (PREdictive channel access SCheme for IEee 802.15.4-compliaNT devices), is proposed. The performance evaluation of the …

Bull Optimization Algorithm Based On Genetic Operators For Continuous Optimization Problems, OĞUZ FINDIK 2015 TÜBİTAK

Bull Optimization Algorithm Based On Genetic Operators For Continuous Optimization Problems, Oğuz Findik

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the researcher proposes a new evolutionary optimization algorithm that depends on genetic operators such as crossover and mutation, referred to as the bull optimization algorithm (BOA). This new optimization algorithm is called the BOA because the best individual is used to produce offspring individuals. The selection algorithm used in the genetic algorithm (GA) is removed from the proposed algorithm. Instead of the selection algorithm, individuals initially produced attempt to achieve better individuals. In the proposed method, crossover operation is always performed by using the best individual. The mutation process is carried out by using individual positions. In …

In the restructured environment of the power industry, various commodities such as energy and operating reserves may be provided through simultaneous auctions. Prediction of market players' behavior in the auctions and simulation of the markets' environment can assist market decision-makers in evaluating specific policies before enforcing them in the real environment. Considering effects of the energy and varieties of reserve markets and also their interactions in the simulations is of high importance, which leads to more realistic simulation results. In this paper, an approach based on a multiagent system is proposed for simulating the simultaneous energy, spinning reserve, and replacement …

Performance Improvement Of Three-Phase Self-Excited Induction Generator Feeding Induction Motor Load, Jyotirmayee Dalei, Kanungo Barada Mohanty

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, the transient and steady-state performances of an isolated self-excited induction generator driven by a wind turbine and feeding power to a dynamic load such as a three-phase induction motor are analyzed. Mathematical modeling and simulation study of the whole system, including the wind turbine, induction generator, capacitor, pulse width modulated voltage source inverter, and dynamic load, are carried out with closed-loop voltage and frequency controller. The complete system is modeled in the stationary $d-q$ frame and validated by comparing simulation and experimental results at no-load. The same mathematical model is then used to study the transient performance …

Integration Of Wind Power For Optimal Power System Black-Start Restoration, AMANY EL ZONKOLY 2015 TÜBİTAK

Integration Of Wind Power For Optimal Power System Black-Start Restoration, Amany El Zonkoly

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Integration of wind farms into power systems may increase the risk of power system blackouts due to the uncertain nature of their output power. In the meantime, wind turbines have relatively short starting time when compared to non-black-start (NBS) generating units. For this reason, wind farms need to participate in power system restoration after blackouts. The decision of restoring a wind farm depends on its output power and the characteristics of the power system. The power system restoration should be accomplished as soon as possible. For complete power system restoration, three stages must be completed: generation restoration, transmission system restoration, …
