Future Engineering Professors' Conceptions Of Learning And Teaching Engineering, 2013 University of South Florida
Future Engineering Professors' Conceptions Of Learning And Teaching Engineering, Ana Teresa Torres Ayala
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Conceptions of learning and teaching shape teaching practices and are, therefore, important to understanding how engineering professors learn to teach. There is abundant research about professors' conceptions of teaching; however, research on the conceptions of teaching of doctoral students, the future professors, is scarce. Furthermore, there is a need to understand not just future engineering professors' conceptions of teaching but also their conceptions of learning. The purpose of this study was to explore qualitative variations in future engineering professors' conceptions of learning and teaching as well as understanding how they came to these conceptions.
The research questions that guided this …

A Faculty-Focused Course Design/Redesign Process, 2013 Purdue University
A Faculty-Focused Course Design/Redesign Process, Pat Reid
Teaching and Learning Technologies Presentations
As a part of the IMPACT (Instruction Matters: Purdue Academic Course Transformation) project, faculty attend weekly developmental workshops. As these have become progressively more focused and interactive, we realized that many faculty members have little to no education in sound course design. As a result, we developed a faculty-focused, backward design process that offers a flexible, step-by-step model. The model provides both practical and theoretical background at each step, links to articles, videos, websites, and more for faculty who wish to delve deeper.

Im:Pact: Supporting Faculty Innovation In Course Redesign, Pat Reid
Teaching and Learning Technologies Presentations
M:PACT is a centrally supported program that encourages faculty innovation in the redesign of large-enrollment courses at Purdue University. In two years, IM:PACT has seen the participation of 61 faculty, representing 49 courses and 11 colleges. FLC (faculty learning community) sessions lead faculty through the course redesign process, focusing on creating student-centered learning and leveraging instructional technology. Faculty work closely with design teams composed of staff from the academic technologies division of the central IT organization (ITaP), the Center of Instructional Excellence (CIE), and Libraries. Participants will explore how to begin a similar program at their own institutions.

Effects Of N2o And O2 Addition To Nitrogen Townsend Dielectric Barrier Discharges At Atmospheric Pressure On The Absolute Ground-State Atomic Nitrogen Density, 2013 Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)
Effects Of N2o And O2 Addition To Nitrogen Townsend Dielectric Barrier Discharges At Atmospheric Pressure On The Absolute Ground-State Atomic Nitrogen Density, Et. Es-Sebbar, N. Gherardi, F. Massines
Dr. Et-touhami Es-sebbar
Absolute ground-state density of nitrogen atoms N (2p3 4S3/2) in non-equilibrium Townsend dielectric barrier discharges (TDBDs) at atmospheric pressure sustained in N2/N2O and N2/O2 gas mixtures has been measured using Two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF) spectroscopy. The quantitative measurements have been obtained by TALIF calibration using krypton as a reference gas. We previously reported that the maximum of N (2p3 4S3/2) atom density is around 3 × 1014 cm−3 in pure nitrogen TDBD, and that this maximum depends strongly on the mean energy dissipated in the gas. In the two gas mixtures studied here, results show that the absolute N …

Advisor: Ingrid Guerra-López, Ph.D.
Major: Instructional Technology
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
The purpose of this study was to develop a research-based model for designing and deploying instructional narratives based on principles derived from narrative theory, development theory, communication theory, learning theory and instructional design theory to enable adult learning and retention and the effective transfer of that retained learning to practice (performance contexts). Findings from these five areas were used to identify elements to inform the development of a model for the design and …

The Civil War Letters Of Andrew Lucas Hunt (Part 1), Dieter C. Ullrich
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Lieutenant Andrew Lucas Hunt arrived at Columbus, Kentucky with Company I of the 134th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 5, 1864. For the next 109 days he served in the Jackson Purchase area. He was an avid writer who documented the daily activities of a soldier stationed at Columbus, Paducah and Mayfield during the Civil War. He describes the his daily activities as a soldier, the mass fortifications at Columbus, the politics of military command, the conditions at Paducah under General E. A. Paine and the Union occupation of Mayfield by Colonel W. W. McChesney in the summer of …

Acreditación De La Universidad Privada ¿Es Un Sinónimo De Calidad?, Gus Gregorutti, María Bon Pereira
Faculty Publications
This is a qualitative study done in a private university in the city of Monterrey, Northern Mexico. With a sample of 50 professors, department directors, students, and employees, within communication and journalism programs, this paper sought to unveil perceptions regarding the impact self-assessments and accreditations had on these two programs. Particularly, it was researched whether they believed these processes impacted their quality. Although accreditation was regarded as important, faculty members and employers believed that certified assessments did not produce significant changes over the way teaching and classes are conducted. Students showed high levels of misinformation about benefits and purposes of …
Courtroom And Classroom Across The Curriculum: The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, 2013 Butler University
Courtroom And Classroom Across The Curriculum: The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Jason N. Goldsmith
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde draws on Robert Louis Stevensons intimate knowledge of Victorian legal culture knowledge Stevenson acquired while studying law at the University of Edinburgh. (Although he was called to the Scottish bar in 1875, he abandoned the legal profession and never practiced it.) Its trace can be found in the work's title, main characters, and narrative structure: the title suggests a legal action; Mr. Utterson is the legal representative of Henry Jekyll, who is himself both a doctor of law (LLD) and a doctor of Civil laws (DCL); and the final two chapters …

This author’s reading selection for his class provoked an unexpected response: when one of the main characters in the reading “came out of the closet,” the students divided themselves into those who were willing to discuss the issues, and those who weren’t.
