"The Greek Gods Don't Exactly Show Up For Their Kids' Basketball Games": Adapting Epic Convention Through Family Dramas In Rick Riordan's The Last Olympian, Hannah McGinnis 2021 Arcadia University

"The Greek Gods Don't Exactly Show Up For Their Kids' Basketball Games": Adapting Epic Convention Through Family Dramas In Rick Riordan's The Last Olympian, Hannah Mcginnis

Capstone Showcase

Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians saga bridges the gap between ancient myth and modern coming-of-age. In this article, the assertion that The Last Olympian is essentially an epic for the new generation invites an examination of the Homeric-heroic tropes and characteristics which are attributed to Riordan's characters. This analysis explains that through the combined motifs of time, age, and family, Riordan actively adapts and subverts these Classical conventions into a modern mythography for young readers.

Holding The Baby: A Parody Of Euripides' Auge At Philyllius Fragment 4. Language: English, Gwendolyn Compton-Engle 2021 John Carroll University

Holding The Baby: A Parody Of Euripides' Auge At Philyllius Fragment 4. Language: English, Gwendolyn Compton-Engle

2021 Faculty Bibliography

This paper focuses on a hitherto unnoticed parody of a scene in Euripides' Auge by the comic poet Philyllius at the outset of the fourth century. It argues that fragment 4 from Philyllius' Auge , in which a man holds loaves of bread as though they were a baby, travesties the Euripidean scene in which Heracles holds the infant he has found in the wilderness. Review of Euripides' Auge and its relationship with satyr play, followed by analysis of the parody by Philyllius, demonstrates a confluence of tragedy, satyr play, and comedy in the period when mythological comedy was on …

Ἀντιάνειραι: Applying A Model Of Homeric Warriorship To Female Warriors In Ancient Greek Literature, Ruby M. Laufer 2021 Scripps College

Ἀντιάνειραι: Applying A Model Of Homeric Warriorship To Female Warriors In Ancient Greek Literature, Ruby M. Laufer

Scripps Senior Theses

In this thesis, I attempt to address the erasure of female warriors from the discussion of Homeric warriorship. I first create a model of the attributes and values of the Homeric warrior, based on the men of the Iliad. I then apply that model to four women: three Amazons—Penthesileia, Antiope, and Hippolyta—and one Greek—Atalanta—to show the ways in which they fit into the model. I conclude by examining the erasure of these women in other Homeric warrior models, and ultimately argue that these women are crucial to the study of warriorship, and should be considered as such in scholarship going …

Conquering Shame: The Growth Of Virginia Woolf’S Character In Moments Of Being, Ellie Windfeld-Hansen

Global Tides

This paper details the roles that shame, guilt, dread and humiliation play in Virginia Woolf's childhood and early adult life. It examines four key instances during these times in her life in which one or more of these feelings are present. Each of these instances also involves certain distinct family members. These experiences of Woolf's discussed in the paper and the family members with which she interacts strengthen her character and contribute to her unique perception and worldview.

An Artistic Expression Of The Connection Between “Man And The Universe” In The Works By Suhrаb Sipehri, Nargiza Shoaliyeva, Safar Abdulloh

The Light of Islam

The poet and writer Sohrab Sipehri (1928-1980) played a particular role in the formation and development of Iranian poetry at the beginning of the twentieth century. This poet created his style of expression and was an enlightened person who provided a holistic connection of modern philosophical views with orthodox ideas. He was a philosopher-poet, an artistic thinker who was able to give the contemporary content of the interpretation of theories of «Unity» - («wahdat al-wujud») and «Perfect man» - («komil inson») in the traditional system of mystical views. As a great writer he created a new set of poetic emblems …
